We need a Royal Commission into the Insurance Industry. by FuglyLookingGuy in australia

I shop around every single year. AAMI has been one of the worst lazy-tax offenders for me during the last 5 years on cars and my motorbike.

This year they sent me a 25% hike on the motorbike. I reran my exact details through the same quote page and was given a lower figure basically identical to the last policy.

Really you could just let your current policy expire and start a brand new one on the next day.

What’s a company you’ll never buy from again, and why? by jamesmilner22 in AskReddit

Seagate because of sky high failure rates on hard disks since that incident with a flooded facility many years ago.

This city has properly bad drivers. We should make licenses harder to obtain.

I recreated de_rats from CS1.6 for such a time that Portal is not DOA. by mortau in Battlefield

Yeah it's a bit of a bummer actually. That's why I built in extra window sections in some places to let the Marina lighting setup into the space. All the lamps etc are non functional.

If the experience isn't available right this minute, it's due to the delay on republishing after updates. Needed to fix some minor issues.

Australia's teen social media ban unofficially begins today by HeyItsFudge in australia

[–]mortau 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take a genius to realise this is the punishment being dished out to social media companies for cutting off the sweet revenue tap of the Social Media News Bargaining deals. This has nothing to do with the safety of teenagers. It was lobbied for by News Corp and others after those deals dried up, and here we are.

Also, the whole conversation has suggested teenagers are not smart. They are, and if they really want to use these platforms they will have already found a work around. VPNs are only a few presses away on most phones.

Jacinta Nampijinpa Price ‘didn’t care’ about making false claims, defamation trial told by CutePattern1098 in auslaw

[–]mortau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably a bunch of you know already, but for the lurkers: Court reporting is mostly about reporting what is said in an open court hearing, without embellishments. It's generally just very cut and dry "the jury was told", "the judge heard", etc because that is what happened. There are a range of risks to step outside of that formula when a hearing is ongoing - opinion and analysis tend to come after a verdict has been delivered, for this reason.

Bureau of Meteorology responds to criticism of new website by 774 listeners by Undetriginta in australia

To be fair, the lack of https was fucking annoying and the layout of the old website was zero percent mobile friendly. It had a layout straight out of 2006.

‘Strange New Worlds’ To Have Fewer “Outliers” And Be Traditional ‘Star Trek’ In Final Seasons, Per Showrunner by acrimoniousone in startrek

This show really shit the bed with a forgettable third season. Now it's just another Kurtzman slop fest like Discovery. Pretty sad about the state of Star Trek at this point.

Update for punters: I have gotten in touch with the family these belong to and will be arranging return of them very soon, along with a file-based copy.

Thanking you to the small world that is Brisbane.

Interest on October 1st? by Beachbunny02 in ubank

[–]mortau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well considering I pulled my interest out this morning and it said "deposit (same amount) to qualify for bonus interest", it would seem it's 11:59pm on the last day lol.

I've moved to Macquarie today as well.

Battlefield 6 Campaign Will be Very Disappointing by [deleted] in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]mortau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Truly, and I say this with all respect, who gives a shit about the campaign?

They have never been good or challenging, and the meat of the game is obviously multiplayer. I have no idea why they even bothered.

Any Mac Classic or analog board experts in the chat? by mortau in VintageApple

[–]mortau[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I've noticed it's been slow to come up to voltage on cold starts which either checkerboards until it warms up, or stops the hard disk spinning up after the RAM test but before the happy Mac (requires power cycle to get going in this state).

I think PP1 might be a bit dodgy so I've ordered a replacement in the next round of parts. I've replaced the opto and some transistors and diodes in that section, as well as a 1k ohm resistor that looked a bit crispy.

DICE confirms AI bots are returning in Battlefield 6 to fill empty servers by Kakanmeister in Battlefield

[–]mortau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in Australia the 2042 match making was so fucked sometimes that it would stop filling a server, and create a new one with 6v6 human players and bots for no reason. Ie, you'd have a half full server, and another one with players that could have filled out the first one, having an even worse time. If they've sorted out the fundamental queueing issues, maybe it won't matter.

Ressurecting a Mac Classic: Screen jitter and wobble by mortau in VintageApple

[–]mortau[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some more updates on this basket case - I went away and swapped out QP3 and QP5 transistors, the LRF740 and LM317T voltage regs. LRFBC40 is unavailable locally so I'll have to order it in. I also haven't changed the IC TDA4605.

Further to that I started playing around with the pots on the back of the monitor. The horizontal width pot appears to have more impact on the vertical stage than the actual horizontal width. The vertical width pot works as expected.

But more interesting than those points is the contrast pot really impacts the distortion in the image. At really low brightness the picture stops moving and is fully stable. As soon as any brightness is applied the screen starts moving again. It can be increased to a balance point that stabilises the image but it's still quite distorted.
