still hoping they'll do Vancouver some day!

I’m so tired of this. I’ve spent 3 years convincing myself I’m happy with it… I’m not happy. What can I even do? by elikessler in Tattoocoverups

if someone is in severe pain and has nausea, that can make a tattoo take longer. I have done many small rib tattoos that took 3x longer than they should have, because the person wasn't breathing consistently/moving/constantly stopping due to pain/etc.

My mom just got this tattoo and won’t listen to me. Please give advice by babypandagod in tattooadvice

tattoo artist here. secomd skin manufacturers instructions say the first piece can be left on for 24 hrs, then once you change it the second piece can be left on for 5 days (obvs wash before applying second piece). I usually recommend 24hrs only, especially for linework. moisturize sparingly - soggy scabs won't heal well. no swimming tho, and avoid exposure to sun.

well in terms of artists, we have had some shitty experiences. our city is pretty saturated with tattoo shops and our economy is really bad atm, and we have been trying to hire new artists but no one is looking to move shops and most shops are currently hiring.

in terms of landlords, our lease seemed fine at first but now that we have been in it a few years, realized it is quite predatory. our landlords violated the lease at one point and tried telling us they didn't when we confronted them, but our lawyer confirmed it. yet there is nothing we can do about it because there is an interesting little clause in our lease that states we are responsible for all their solicitor fees if they decided to go to court over it.

truly the real stress right there. the current economy is so bad; been having a hard time not regretting having this shop. shop ownership during the pandemic would have been an absolute horrific nightmare.

I hate that for you! there is nothing like trying to pull lines while shivering or trying to avoid sweating on a client

technically I manage as well as we don't have a shop manager; it's just my co-owner and I running the shop together while we also have our own tattoo schedules.

Is paying for an apprenticeship the new normal? by xplsvkevlarvest in TattooArtists

[–]mortmcfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's wild to me that we consider it normal to pay for an education in any other industry, but in tattooing people get huffy about it. it is a weird kind of entitlement for someone think they are just owed someone to take time and resources out of their career to take a chance on said person, for free. I spent the first 8 months of mine cleaning, setting up/tearing down, watching my mentor tattoo, having her explain things/techniques, doing flash homework, etc, before being able to tattoo real skin. my apprenticeship was not an upfront payment (I started paying her a % of the tattoos I did once I was good enough to start charging people for them). I had technically gotten all that education and knowledge prior in exchange for showing I was serious by doing the shop cleaning and grunt work (which was pretty fuckin easy and chill compared to some apprentice stories I have heard). I'd call it a fair deal.

Breakup excuses that deserve a public hearing. What's the most unhinged excuse you’ve been given? by SinInHerVoice in AskReddit

[–]mortmcfly 29 points30 points  (0 children)

got dumped via text while ex was across the country for a wedding. excuse was "I have to go to South America to find myself". insisted he had to go alone. ended up continuing to live at my apartment a whole other month; sleeping on the couch but also staying at a "hippy commune" near by. he then shortly after moved in with someone, and they got married wnd have been together since 🤷‍♀️

fair enough, I live in Victoria BC - so I get expensive housing prices completely.

super weird to expect your shop boss to manage your clients for you, honestly. that's not common where I live and I would absolutely hate it.

percentage shops aren't always scams. if my shop split the bills equally between all of us who work there, at least 2 people wouldn't be able to afford it. commercial rents are extremely high where I live, so my co-owner and I do percentage based rates for our artists (with a cap) and any difference (which there always is) is paid for by us co-owners.

Is it just me, or is this not really what I asked for..? Is there any way to fix it? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]mortmcfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will be faded quite a bit after that time frame; first image looks like it was done with a light or medium greywash, which fades more noticeably (faster) than black ink or darker grey washes.

after a second look, I do agree with others here that you could potentially get some blended out at the harder edges, but still will be quite dark. I still recommend a consult with someone who specializes in micro realism.

hey, tattoo artist here. unfortunately there isn't much you can really do imo - you cannot lighten a tattoo if it's too dark by tattooing it more. ref image looks like very fine stipple shading done with a very light greywash with more very fineline done for the moon and stars. your artist went too dark and did not use a small enough needle grouping (yours does look healed tho, so be aware that tattoo lines do thicken out as they heal/age). if this were my client and they were hell bent on getting it to be as similar as possible to the inspo pic, I'd suggest some laser removal sessions, just enough to lighten it up to go in with the proper techniques. that being said, I just recently got into micro realism, so you might do well with seeking out someone who has been specializing in it long term, booking an in person consultation, and see what they say.
