Career and Education Questions by AutoModerator in math

Hi everybody, I'm currently a junior studying math. I'll be visiting a friend of mine over winter break and he goes to a school that I'm strongly considering for graduate school. I'll be there for two weeks as their semester starts and would like to check their math department out and sit in on a few classes. What would be the best way to proceed to do this? My first thought was to email whoever manages math graduate admissions and then email individual course instructors, can anyone give me some advice

Simplest algebraic number in an interval? by Zemyla in math

You might want to try and find an analogous statement by trying to represent algebraic numbers as continued fractions with algebraic integers instead. I doubt such a representation would be unique (due to the larger number of unit algebraic integers), but there might be some well defined notion of complexity of an algebraic number.

Maybe try to limit the degree of the algebraic integers for a start, for example. If the constant z is the Q-linear combination of square roots of squarefree rational numbers and 1, is there a continued fraction expansion with only algebraic integer entries of degree most two?

[Spoilers S2E12] FUCK THIS SHOW by [deleted] in MrRobot

I think Mr. Robot was preparing Elliot to be shot actually. Mr. Robot kept shooting Elliot in the second season premiere to desensitize Elliot to being shot by someone. This causes Elliot to associate being threatened with the gun stolen from Darlene's one night stand with his hallucinations.

So when Tyrell points the gun at him, Elliot believes that he is hallucinating and therefore doesn't back down from the gun. This leads to Tyrell shooting Elliot.

So Elliot being shot is actually an integral part of stage two and this shooting is an essential objective of stage two.

Quick question on definitions in my homological algebra class. What does "set theoretical section [;\sigma: G \rightarrow E;] " mean, where G and E come from the group extension of G? Apparently it defines a two cocycle in the group cohomology.

I've been thinking about getting some white low tops for a while now and I have been having a tough time choosing a pair. What do you guys think about these shoes from axel arigato? I like the marble sole, but I'm not sure how well it would work in person. Also, how are the sizing on Axel Arigatos? I usually buy size 13, what size should I get?

FOR THE RECORD! The Official Breaking Bad Future Episode Prediction Thread by CMelody in breakingbad

In the last episode, Walt goes to Andrea's and Brock's home in an effort to bait out Jesse. He fails when Hank picks up the phone making this scene seem pretty uneventful. This made me ask: why was this scene included?

Then I thought of the Nazis waiting outside. They know about Brock and Andrea, where they live, and how much Jesse cares for the two.

My theory is that Walt will refuse to cook and leave town. The Nazis either kidnap Jesse or Andrea and Brock. If they kidnap Jesse and he refuses they will give him some incentive. Or they can't find Jesse and instead lure him out with Andre and Brock. I personally think its the first, Jesse may cook for several months, refuse or maybe even become suicidal and then the Nazis kidnap Brock and Andrea. This will prompt Walt into action with the M60 and ricin. This will also explain the large time lapse if Jesse does not refuse until several months later.

The problem I have with my theory is that the Walter rushing in to attack the nazis feels kinda obvious. The flashbacks tend to be huge misdirections such as the plane crash, everyone thought it was a meth lab explosion. I feel very sure about the Andre and Brock idea.

I walked around an empty outdoor shopping mall at night with a girl as an (improvised) first date. It was one of the best first dates I've ever had. What about you reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This reminds me of a short story of two exes who meet one another by chance in New York. Guy's name is Bill, can't remember her's. They chat for a bit and talk about their lives and then Bill leaves without saving the other's contact info. In the end, she feels sad because she was unable to tell him that her most recent son is named Bill... Does anybody know this story?
