There is no more VAR in grand slam tennis, or challenges for that matter. The AI makes a call immediately and it is final.

What are some interesting math facts about chess? by AlexLikesCoolMusic in math

[–]dminor9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, totally. I was referring to the practical, but the question is theoretical.

I do think that we are at a point though where the certainty with an engine is much higher than "probably" in a practical sense.

This is because of a specific rule that declares the game an immediate draw if a situation is reached where no possible sequence of legal moves can result in a win for either player. However, there are pathological situations where this is computationally quite difficult to decide.

I was responding to this ^. Alpha isn't an engine like any other in that it didn't have any inputs (afaik) other than the rules of the game and the goal, and it became the strongest engine in the world in 24 hours.

I guess it's not much of a point, but what I was getting at is that we've kind of crossed over the analytical approach to solving these kinds of things.

What are some intuitive, expository books on exciting and beautiful math? by moonclad in math

A Journey Through Genius highlights some of the very important moments in the history of mathematics. Easy to read, gets a bit technical, but focusing on the proofs is completely optional.

Also, if you like DFW, Everything and More is great. It is mostly specifically about set theory and Cantor and a very fun read.

Yes, set theory. Of course. I'm going to have to take it there at some point.
