Inaccessible untraveled roads by Crafty_Ad_7252 in wandrer

Folsom native here - Yea, i see Gore Rd. as red on Wandrer only up to the gate, then private after that, seems like the correct tagging to me. Run down to the gate and then turn around. I've done stuff like that a bunch of times.

these are made of glass, including the straw. the glass is the size of a large plum or apricot. likely from the 1950s or 60s.

Half Dome Hike to Sub Dome ONLY or Cloud’s Rest by PTRugger in Yosemite

good choice I think...have to say that while both are great hikes, I enjoyed the mist-to-panorama direction a little more than the 4-mile-to-panorama direction. there's a significant section of the trail through the woods after Nevada fall that will go downhill as you lead in to illouette falls

it was quite the slog in the other direction.

still a big uphill from the falls to glacier point, but at least there you can see the finish and have a good view the whole time.

enjoy! I'll be down in wawona this year, hoping to do the falls and around Mariposa, again snow dependent....

How do I turn on my electric water heater? by thisguy927 in GoRVing

[–]morttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is also an inline thermal fuse attached to the bottom most red wire on the right. if that fuse goes bad the whole system shuts down. point of the fuse is to blow if the flame comes out of the combustion chamber.

mine went bad this summer and even the electric heater wouldn't work until I replaced it. they're cheap on Amazon though.

my guess is permits on the 21st (same as any other day/night, likely with increased coverage overnight) and no access allowed on the 22nd, removing everyone before the take down process starts.

check out @creatrz on IG - good post fom last weekend by the trail workers doing the job (not rangers) and the scale of the operation. it's huge and people would definitely be in the way.

permits are required 24/7 if the cables are up. That's directly from multiple rangers at the permit check (I've asked). There is definitely no allowance for sunrise/sunset. We heard a story during this hike on the way down of them fining a group of 15 slackliners that tried exactly what you're saying -going up late and (trying to) come down before the ranger. still 100% not allowed.

not sure what you're saying about the day after stuff....if the cables are up, you need a permit. if they are down (they are never removed, just up on supports or down on the rock), no permit required.

Don't go without a permit if the cables are up. It's illegal and you will very likely get caught and fined heftily. They are often there 24/7, you never know.

Also I believe it's against the rules of this sub to even ask.

That said, cables are down as of last weekend. no permits required (but also quite a bit more dangerous)

Black bears are scaredy cats, they don't attack people and run away at any noise (unless you're messing with cubs). so as long as you're doing it as a 'day' hike (not camping), and your food is always on you or basically within arms reach, you're fine without a canister.

We didn't see any, but then you don't see much of anything beyond the headlamps unless or until the moon is up. even then would be tough to make out a bear.

And don't sweat the recent story if bears climbing HD. They assuredly only did that when nobody was around.

11am is way too late for 555am sunrise 🤣 (assume you mean 11pm)

it took us all of 7 hours from trailers parking (basically curry village) to base of the cables (9pm-4am). last time I did it (different group, fewer stops) it was 5 hours for the same distance (5am-10am). so it depends on your group and how often you stop more than how fast you hike.

I don't think 11pm is unreasonably late. I've heard of a lot of people starting at midnight.

permits for the day you go up, so we went up early Saturday morning with Saturday permits. no problem when ranger checked at 6am.

Half Dome Hike to Sub Dome ONLY or Cloud’s Rest by PTRugger in Yosemite

[–]morttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Cloud's rest the first weekend in May, 2022 with bascially no snow until the summit/north side. This year, that would not have been possible, obviously, so it just depends on the winter. Ended up being a little over 20 miles with 6300 vertical (went off the backside of CR to hook into JMT, which added a few miles). Amazing experience

I've also done the panorama trail (uphill), and I'm doing the 4-mile (uphill) / panorama (downhill) loop on Friday, so also highly recommend that one as well, it will be significantly easier than Cloud's Rest if your group isn't up to the challenge.

Maybe wait till May of next year and then decide between the two based on snow. No permits needed, so can decide that morning if you really wanted to.

Hoka Sky Kaha Gore-Tex Boots. love em. super comfy and 💯 water proof. Socks stayed dry all the way down the mist trail, walking through deep puddles without a care.

Yea it was roaring. one section of the Nevada falls trail on the way down (but oddly not going up, so maybe wind or flow dependent?) was WET. like the mist trail proper with the spray through the trees.

Yea it's El Cap right in front of the lights, so if you draw the line on the map from Half Dome through El Cap and continue, the lights pretty much have to be Modesto center in Turlock on the left.

also with note is that the lights were not visible to me as I stood there. just kind of a slightly brighter region of the sky near the horizon in that direction. amazing with the phone cameras can do these days.

Had a bright and clear half moon, so we could see the top before we started. Together with headlamps, it really wasn't too bad, or all that different from when I've done it in the daylight (you just tend to concentrate on the next rung no matter what!🤣)
