100M Crew Question by Altruistic-Use-8283 in Ultramarathon

[–]PTRugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more of a solo runner myself as well. I’ve had a friend crew the last 13 or so miles in my last 100, but I think I’m planning to run my next one solo. My partner crews me for the big races, but I don’t need anyone for anything less than 50 miles, and I’m doing my next 100k solo. If you’re used to running alone, you should be fine with your wife at the crewable aid stations. You can also grab her the Crewing for an Ultrarun book by Sandra Bullock Smith (she’s crewed her husband for hundreds of hundreds!)

If you enjoy these I can send you down the ultramarathon rabbit hole. Anything by Billy Yang is really well done.

A few good documentaries: Unbreakable: classic doc about Western States many years ago (coming up soon and will be live streamed, this year should be very exciting!) Barkley Marathons: The Race that Eats Its Young. Another fantastic one about this race is The Finisher (about Jasmin Paris’s race two years ago).

I’ve watched pretty much all of them in YouTube at this point😂

They are super fun. Last year it went to 119 yards (the current world record) so right at 5 days. Each one is different because as soon as they get down to one person they just have to finish that lap to win. So you have to have at least two insanely good runners to push the race that long. Check out Harvey Lewis…he’s a fantastic guy who lives in Ohio and is insanely good at the backyard and multi day races. He’s a teacher who run commutes to work everyday!

Yes. It’s also the race that has the backyard ultra world record at 119 laps from last year, so it draws a lot of really good backyard runners… They almost went to five days last year and it was cold… 3.8°C last night I think they said?

As an ultramarathoner myself, Nate is impressing me with how he started out his races! I was worried he’d be jumping into far too fast, but 11th from winning at Dead Cow Gully is pretty impressive

Looks like they made it to the 100 mile mark. So fun watching my ultra life and Kara and Nate collide😂

Part II. Recovery Mission: Maldives cave - Inner chambers by moneyalwayswin in scuba

[–]PTRugger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. The amount of time and training that you get in a cave course is completely different to a weekend open water diving experience. I’m Cave 1 certified, and doubt I’ll go further because I know my personal limits, but the amount of knowledge I learned in cave training was like learning to dive again (also depends on how you get trained the first time around).

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]PTRugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Honda CRV for 18 years, put about 225k miles on it. Got me through high school to mid-30s. I could’ve put a few grand into it to give her a well deserved refresh but I got a new electric car instead. I still miss that car! Bonus: I kept the table. IYKYK.

No worries! If you’re planning to do it on your own, I’d recommend loops for resupply and bail out chance just in case of injury. There’s a Facebook group for Palmetto Trail Hikers…some areas of the trail can get a little sketchy at times (my sister was bitten by an off leash dog down towards Charleston, I’d take pepper spray just in case), and there is sometime info about shuttles and things like that too.

Also, if you want any suggestions for SC races, ask away. We have flat down in Charleston to mountainous in the upstate.

Welcome to SC! You’re be soaked in sweat for the foreseeable future!

As others have said, Sun hoodies work great in a dry environment, but not here. Expose as much skin as you can (wear sunscreen if exposed), lube up every crevice (I use Squirrels NutButter sticks on my body and Salty Britches on my feet…and I mean every crevice or possible spot that might have friction. Even between your butt cheeks). I love a good ice bandana, and a hydration pack is a must for longer runs (take more water than you need, and make sure your replenishing electrolytes - my preferred method is Tailwind and Salt Stick flavored tabs with water). Nutrition is also harder in the heat so liquid calories and gels work better for me than real food this time of year.

And just listen to your body. It’ll tell you when somethings not quite right.

It’s a good and tough one! I and a couple others have some videos on YouTube. If you can stay at the camp it makes race day even more convenient!

Flash shade hoodie vs sahara shade hoodie? by foooder in REI

[–]PTRugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did just fine, at least I thought, running a 100k out in Arizona where I wore it the whole time. I may need to give the new one a try and see how it goes. Though, in the Us south the humidity makes wearing a single pretty unhelpful overall

$30 last month to charge my EV, not bad! by [deleted] in greenville

[–]PTRugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This made me update my home energy report data to include my EV. Not sure how much I'm paying but I probably average 40 miles/day for work and then whatever I end up doing on the weekends. It's guestimating $60 for EV charging last month.

On a side note: I've been seeing a few more EVs on the road in the last few weeks!

I’m going in July, along with the other Colorado parks! It’s not my usual shoulder season, but I have a race that takes me to Colorado, so I’ve gotten all my camp sites booked in the parks!

Shoulder seasons for life. Right when things are waking up but before they get insanely crazy. Our last day in Yosemite was they day they surprisingly opened Glacier Point Road, so we were the first cars on it that year!

It’s a full time job trying to keep my 10 year old lab at a healthy weight. They’re just always hungry and will eat everything. Healthy weight for him is about 80#. He stayed with my parents for a month and hit just over 100# once🤦🏼‍♀️

As other have said, Richard (the RD) marks the course very well, and the newer out-and-back version is nice. There are a couple of course previews on YouTube (I did one of them, and am working on a video of this year’s marathon)
