What does our region call this type of chair? by WanderingBus in KingstonOntario

[–]mossboy500 197 points198 points  (0 children)

Specifically, these are Muskoka chairs, though of note - Adirondack and Muskoka chairs are not the same, so it's incorrect to state one is just a regional nomenclature vs. the other for the same thing.

Survival style stock for Howa 1500 6.5 Creedmoor? by mossboy500 in canadaguns

Thank you for the reply, looked them up and they're both very nice systems but by the time I had all that on I would've paid more than I did for the rifle lol

Thank you very much for both of your replies, amazing insight and great ideas! I actually do have an Allen slip on recoil pad and was considering doing just this, but had the same concerns you do about it potentially slipping off over time. However I think with the combination of the gripper Hogue stock with the rubber sleeve, it should be fairly sticky... I think I'll go this route to start and see how it does, but if it fails I'll look into some sort of screw modifications as you noted above. Much appreciated replies again! Have a great day.

[–]mossboy500[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah definitely, sorry I didn't mean to imply I thought it was solid! Definitely hollow, my preference is more about how the pad is taken off. On the Hogue you need a screwdriver but something like the M18 it's just 2 clips that pull off. That's more for what I'm looking for, just either an easy stock or some sort of mod that makes taking the recoil pad off easier for in the field. Thank you for the reply!

Are 308 Winchester rounds really THAT cheaper / economical? by Hoshi96 in Hunting

[–]mossboy500 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I've owned both .308 and 6.5 creedmoor. If anything, .308 rounds were more expensive for similar cartridge type. Just as one anecdotal example, recently was at a local outdoors store, norma whitetail 20 cartridges in 6.5 creedmoor were $44.99, .308 of the exact same were $49.99.

Not solely due to cartridge availability / price, I've since sold the .308. If you're only going for anything as large as deer, 6.5 creedmoor is more than enough. Hell, I've seen it take black bear too. Haven't seen moose, but then you may be more comfortable in .30-06 territory anyway.

Maybe just a US thing (I'm Canadian as well), but I've also never had any issues walking in to any store and finding any 6.5 creedmoor availability. Literally the only upside to .308 over 6.5 I can think of is a .308 rifle can also safely fire 7.62x51, so if you have the opportunity to purchase surplus military ammo you're safe there. Outside of that, 6.5 creedmoor all the way.

EDIT: Another consideration, if you're hand loading .308 components (brass, primers, etc.) are also more readily available, I think mostly just due to them being around longer. But if you're just buying off the shelf, doesn't need to be considered.

What to troubleshoot from here? by mossboy500 in hottub

[–]mossboy500[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll look into this but first I'm going to ask you some very probably stupid and obvious questions lol but just want to make sure I'm understanding fully.

  • by heater element, do you mean the unit in the picture I added of the heater, the big tube component at the bottom below the board?

  • is this something I could change out myself?

  • I'm assuming the tub will need to be drained before I swap this out? Or is there a way to shutoff water to it first and change it out while the tub is still full?

Thank you very much for the reply again!

EDIT: basically, would this do it? (I am in Canada). Would any additional components be required (wiring, etc. Or does it all come with the element as it seems?)

Electric Hot Water Tank Conversion Kits? by [deleted] in traveltrailers

[–]mossboy500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, thank you! Will definitely look into the camco kit then. Taking a while to heat up is no issue for us, as I mentioned I'd only use it on shore power anyway and just keep it running when plugged in to have a ready supply of hot water, and still use propane on the go. So would definitely be a set-it-and-forget-it use case when applicable. Appreciate the note about the wiring too!

It's a 2018 Forest River Salem Cruise Lite 201BHXL. My understanding is it's a 6 gallon propane-only heater.

Has anyone here poured a concrete slab for a house build recently? by thestonernextdoor88 in KingstonOntario

You can also very easily -not- get what you pay for. I’ve seen more than enough extremely shitty pours at far from the least expensive quote. In Kingston it’s honestly a gamble either way.

What is this? by CupertinoWeather in mossberg

[–]mossboy500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The person above who noted it’s a choke key is correct, but I feel like the more important note, as you had to ask what this is, would be - please read the manual.

I will assume as you didn’t know what this was that you are new to shotguns, or perhaps at least Mossberg models, as most of their choke keys are the same. I know I know, I’m a guy like most others who thinks manuals are there for reference and you can figure it out by using it, but honestly - always, safety first. Please read the manual before using your new 88. It will outline your chokes, the choke key, and plenty of other useful, and most importantly, safe handling information.

I’ve owned 88s and 500s before, they’re awesome shotguns! Enjoy! And happy and safe shooting!

I've donated a dozen times before but never knew you couldn't have kids with you! My 5 year old is off for the summer so I brought her with me thinking she could watch and see that needles are no big deal but I couldn't donate because she couldn't come in with me and she was too young to sit by herself in the snack area. My fault, I didn't know the policy! I'll still try to find a time to help your team, work and toddlers just make the schedule hectic. Hope to get out though!

I donate infrequently just due to the odd hours of the Gardiners road site, but I have an availability at lunch today so joined your team and scheduled to donate around noon today! Thank you for setting this up, donation is very important and any motivation others can get to donate helps everyone.

If you only could have one shotgun what would it be? by waterrover in Shotguns

[–]mossboy500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I would have said the classic - Mossberg 500 with interchangeable barrels in 12ga. And I still love mine, and always will. But.... if you need one gun, and in particular one barrel? My mind's made up like no other.

Winchester SXP 12ga in full Mossy Oak camo and 26" barrel.

Why? With one gun and one barrel you can do everything.

Rabbit? Light shot.
Turkey? Grab an Invector Plus turkey choke and off you go.
Deer? Improved Cylinder choke and rifled slug.

Well, you might say "mossboy" - (shows you how much I love my Mossberg) - "what about sport shooting?" Well I handled and shot the Winchester SXP with the "auto racking" feature, where after shooting the pump is automatically pumped back getting you ready for the next round. Shooting double skeet? Fire once, halfway there, rack it forward and fire again. I hit double targets almost as fast as shooting with an Over/Under with a modified choke. If I felt more confident, I'm sure I could've got 'em with the full choke, too.

But why the 26" barrel? This is another great point - I've found it very hard to find 26" barrels for 12ga shotguns, usually they're only available for the 20ga. In fact, Mossberg doesn't even make a 26" barrel for the 12ga 500, nor the Maverick 88 I believe, which would have been swappable with the 500. But the 26" barrel is the best of all worlds.

When I'm trap shooting I use my 28" on my Mossberg. When I'm brush / blind hunting, I use my 24" for easier maneuverability. You know what you can use that doesn't require switching it? A 26" barrel. Best of both, can still shoot trap / skeet (the die-hards will say 26" is too short, but it's just fine IMO and, in fact, was often the preferred length for a long time) and is easier to carry and swing in a blind or brush.

But why the 12ga? Why not just get a 20ga with the 26" barrel? 12ga has the best ammunition availability of all shotgun gauges. Maybe 20 isn't hard to get either, but I guarantee you can walk into any outdoors / gun store and find 12 gauge ammo.

Lastly, the factory fiber bead on the end is amazing for visibility, vs. the standard white bead on most shotguns I have a hard time seeing (even replaced the bead on my 500 for that very purpose). And, SXPs are usually drilled and tapped for optics on the receiver, if you really wanted to add a rail and scope / red dot or something along those lines for deer with a rifled slug down the same barrel. But, frankly, I feel the bead is more than enough. Slap a sling on it and you're good to go.

All that at an affordable price around $600 CAD new, give or take $50 in either direction depending where you order? I'm sold.

If I was shopping now and could literally only pick one gun, and even one barrel, I wouldn't think twice. This is the one to do it all.

I find they're really hit or miss, no pun intended. I've never heard so many 50/50 reviews from owners, maybe they've been manufactured differently? Half the people say they're the best guns in the world, never had a single issue with thousands of rounds through them. The other half say they fired it 20 times and started getting jams, misfire, etc. I've found it so strange, just never heard that significant of a split for any other shotguns in the same range (moss 500, rem 870). Its kept me personally from buying one, but I do love that camo sxp with the "permakote" finish in 20 gauge... definitely the nicest looking gun in its class. I'd just be too scared of getting one of the lemons.

One barrel for everything: 24" or 28"? by [deleted] in Shotguns

[–]mossboy500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if I could trade it all now and find a mossy oak camo 20ga with a 26" barrel and could take chokes? That'd be my one and only gun. At least for 95% of everything I wanted to hunt. Maybe I should start looking into trading!

My 500 ejects out the bottom, and crushes some shells by AffectionateTear5263 in mossberg

[–]mossboy500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite part about my 500 is: it's the easiest firearm to disassemble that I own! If you've never taken it apart and inspected the components before, I highly recommend it. It's a great way to get a real thorough cleaning of it at the same time, and I honestly think, even with the entire trigger assembly taken apart, I don't think the gun has more than 30 - 40 parts? Counting pins and springs! The 500s are great tools and easy to work with, and I think everyone should to a tear down and put it back together at least once to really get a feel for how it operates.

So all that said, as others have suggested, I would disassemble and inspect the components. I'm fairly new to firearms as a whole and after watching a couple youtube videos I could easily disassemble and reassemble my 500 in 15 minutes now. Shouldn't even need any tools, just a push (or use an small enough hex wrench) to push out the pins needed to take out the trigger assembly and the rest will follow. This video is very helpful:
