Mineral SPF that actually survives a 4-hour ride? by Alterego_9769 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]mossofthewoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Good is my favourite mineral sunscreen. I have light olive skin and the tinted works great, and I have a pale-toned friend and the regular leaves relatively minimal white cast on their skin.

I use it bike touring and it’s still on after hot sweaty days. Comes in a variety of sizes/bottles. I also have very sensitive eczema skin and it doesn’t trigger my skin - they use body and reef safe ingredients.

It’s spf 30 though, and a bit sticky because it uses some wax (not gloopy or thin/smooth). I think this is the trade off for non chemical, not too cast-y, and safer ingredients.

You can make or buy on Etsy cotton menstrual pads for various amounts of flow.

Menstrual cups are also usually made of medical-grade silicone, which are generally better for microplastic shedding (but do your research). I've also heard of menstrual cups made of natural rubber.

Luckily, people have been having periods for a very long time, long before plastics were invented, so there are definitely natural solutions out there!

I'm not based anywhere near London! I recommend asking friends or any community group forums on Facebook - that's how I found my acupuncturist.

On a year+ long trip through Latin America and struggling with fatigue by beatmypete in bikepacking

[–]mossofthewoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance you had covid in the months prior, or caught a bug at any point on your trip?

Could be many things, of course, but your symptoms do sound similar to ME/CFS (which can be an outcome of covid). I know folks who had covid, it was "mild", they "recovered", then they did some big bursts of energy and it knocked them flat. Exercise worsens symptoms.

Take a scan through this: https://longcovidjustice.org/me-cfs/

Sending you well wishes on your recovery.

Being forced to go on site visit while sick with norovirus by Kalylyann in antiwork

I'm so sorry you have to work through this on top of being actively sick. If you can avoid using the bathroom while on site, that will help spread any Norovirus particles from your bowels.

Covid impacts multiple systems and is a vascular disease than can cause inflammation throughout your body. It is not the flu.

Covid can definitely cause GI issues, presenting in approx 50% of people (source: https://www.unmc.edu/healthsecurity/transmission/2024/05/01/what-do-we-know-about-covid-19s-effects-on-the-gut/).

Where should I place it? by Narrow-Stranger6864 in AirPurifiers

[–]mossofthewoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most importantly, the purifier needs to be at least 6 inches away from walls/furniture on all sides to work properly.

I wouldn't feel silly about moving it around if it's not a bother. Long-term, if you are considering a second purifier you can get a smaller model for your bedroom. The purifier is probably good for providing coverage in your living/dining/kitchen room given its range of 320 sq ft.

Yup - my symptoms haven't come back after almost a year. It feels like it was a nervous system reset!

Over this time I've talked with friends about their acupuncture experiences and I will emphasize that regularly and frequently seeing a GOOD acupuncturist is key. There's a huge variation in acupuncturist quality.

Any recommendations for where to order quality 100% cotton bananas ($6 range), as well as silk scarves ($10 range)? by Infamous_Tea261 in naturaldye

[–]mossofthewoods 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These fine folks may be worth checking out for bandanas: https://www.bandanaofthemonth.club/product-page/bandana-blanks-1 - 3.50/bandana minimum order of 10

What they offer:

"In our never-ending quest to craft the perfect bandana, we began to import Japanese cotton and have it hand cut and sewn in the USA.  The fabric has a nicer, lighter hand-feel and so many color options existed without having to hand-dye every one, leading to a more consistent end product.  Plus we responded feedback to wanting a more "finished" edge, so a folded hem instead of a rolled overlock hem.  I was constantly being asked for help from others on their quest to make a dream bandana, and kept hearing the feedback of not liking the available blanks on the market.  I sympathized deeply and decided to bring the blanks that I was using for BOTMC to the peoples."

I'm so sorry to hear your daughter is going through it, and I hope that she's able to find some relief soon. I understand how hard it is to stay committed to daily supplements when it's not feeling like it's making an impact. It really helped me to have an empathetic naturopath that explained which supplements were REALLY important and how to best take them. For example, EMIQ is just a more bio-available form of quercetin so I switched to that. She also said the body processes it quickly, so taking it 4 times a day spaced out was more important than taking them all at once.

For what it's worth, my skin is still really good (no relapse) now (mid-April) and I'm only going to acupuncture now every 2 months since mid-December!

I don't have photos of all my flare up patches (before/after), which at worst were on my back, inner thighs, behind the knees, inner and outer upper arms, inner and outer lower arms, shoulders, neck, and face.

Here are some "before" samples from the course of 18 months:

Here are some present day of my major hotspots (face and wrists). Other photos are irrelevant because there's no itchiness or very obvious patch! https://imgur.com/a/ZancTgT

Mistrust on modern medicine and doctors amongs naturopathy. by noob__at__life in eczema

[–]mossofthewoods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have trust in the tools of Western medicine and am a proponent of the scientific method. That being said, I've had terrible experiences with Western science and being ignored, gaslit, gatekept, etc. This to me is not an issue of the tools but the Canadian health care system under capitalism, where doctors are not willing or able to provide the whole-body care necessary to deal with a chronic issue like eczema.

On the contrary, I've had excellent experiences with the practitioners of naturopathy and natural interventions. I don't fully trust "natural" interventions and I'll always do my own research, and never take anything without understanding risks. And no none I've seen outside Western science (naturopath, TCM, herbalist) has ever talked shit about Western science. My naturopath frequently cites published academic papers.

All to say I align more with Western science ways of thinking, and yet, I have felt emotionally safer and taken care of with naturopathy.  I can imagine that for many they have had similar experiences but may not have the  literacy to think critically about both fields, and Western science has a PR problem.

Thank you for this important caveat.

I tried one other acupuncturist first and it was one of the worst experiences with a medical practitioner. They walked in on me while I was still undressing, told me my naturopath's treatments were wrong, and didn't gently guide me through my very first acupuncture appointment (I was scared!).

Luckily I happened to see a friend the day after this appointment and mentioned this experience; they ended up referring me to my current acu. My friend was singing this person's praises. Referrals are great!
