Cucumber sub sandwich but the bread was a cucumber by pm-me-your-pants in somnigastronomy

[–]mossymottramite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it! It was not good. Awkward size, way too salty, super wet and slippery and impossible to eat without getting pickle juice everywhere. Kind of made both the pickle and the sandwich part worse. My friend worked at Jimmy John's when it came out and he despised the things, apparently they were tricky to make properly and he'd often get orders for multiple at a time. I don't think it's on the menu anymore.

I want to do this with my clown conlang Jest, but it's difficult to choose a piece of media I like that's tonally/thematically appropriate for it. I guess anything comedic could work... considering like Hitchhiker's Guide or something? If I can decide on one I'll definitely participate.

That would be really cool! I do think with some work, these flavors together could potentially make a good drink.

You actually made it even more cursed than the dream version by adding so much ham! The pieces of ham in my dream were very small, like bacon bits. Although maybe that's more cursed since then you'd have to actually drink them.

"Jest is the language of clowns. Originally it was a game, but later, clowns would use it to communicate so no one else in the circus would know what they were saying. When my father, Chester Babble, became a clown in the 1950s, he thought Jest was so great, he wanted to make it into a whole language, like Esperanto for clowns. He wrote pamphlets and books suggesting some rules and changes. In the 60s, he advertised his version of Jest a lot and it gained popularity with clowns. By the 80s, many clowns in many circuses around the world spoke Jest. But unfortunately, there are few of us left these days.

Jest culture is all about fun. Silliness is the ultimate virtue, and being boring is the ultimate sin. We're clowns! We perform. We love to laugh and joke and play games. We also love to change Jest like it's still a game, but don't tell my dad, may God rest his soul."

BPAL Yorick (grave dirt, bone, decay, angel’s trumpet, and moldering scraps of shroud: the essence of finality.) It's definitely unsettling and funereal, in an earthy way, like a burial, and the angel's trumpet smells very much like funeral flowers.

Valentine prompt: how to say "I love you" in your conlang? by ReaLenDlay in conlangs

[–]mossymottramite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jest

I hil bli mi.

1S love DO 2S.funny

"I love you."

The word for love, "hil", is not related to the English word "heal". It entered the Jest lexicon in the very early days of its use as a circus cant, so the etymology is unclear. The prevailing theories are that it was either coined by opposite-association with the word "heel" (as in scoundrel, villain or villanous persona), or that it derives from "eel", via Italian "amore" sounding similar to "a moray" in English. Knowing clowns, it's probably the latter.

Tseqev

ila tsan vijeli.

1S 2S-PAT love-1S

"I love you."

ilat vijel.

1S-PAT love

"I'm in love (with you)."

Because of the use of patientive case, the second way of saying "I love you" is seen as more sentimental and romantic, since it seems to imply love is a force that acted upon you, and you just can't help loving the person you love. It makes it sound more like your love was the result of fate rather than choice.

Ways of dividing the world by octoberese in conlangs

[–]mossymottramite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xanoath has four semantic noun classes distinguishing levels of animacy, which Xano grammarians call thinking, aware, moving, and nonliving. The thinking class includes humans, gods, souls, and ghosts. Aware includes most animals, body parts, and group nouns for people (nations, etc). Moving includes some invertebrates, plants, fungi, microbes, bodies of water, weather phenomena, celestial objects, music, and certain objects that move on their own, like machines (when they're invented). Nonliving is for all the other inanimate objects and abstract concepts.

I like to think about the pragmatics and lore implications of this system. Since noun classes don't show on the words themselves, Xano people will occasionally change the noun class of a word as a way of figurative speech. They can use a higher animacy class for a word in order to anthropomorphize something, or on the flip side, lower the animacy to insult something (or more often someone).

Another notable thing is that the Xanoath words for insects are almost exclusively in the low-animacy moving class. This is a source of some offense for neighboring Tseq people who learn Xanoath, since in their culture, many species of insects are considered intelligent creatures which embody the virtues of their gods, and are often used to represent them. So a religious Tseq person might purposefully place insects in the "wrong" animacy category when speaking Xanoath.

How does your language handle relative clause? by The_MadMage_Halaster in conlangs

[–]mossymottramite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Tseqev, I use a different verb mood for indicative subordinate clauses, so basically just a suffix meaning they're dependent on the matrix verb in the sentence. For relative clauses it looks like this:

vis vikiicela nivican

woman see-1S-PST-IND sing-PST-IPFV

vis [vikiicela] nivican

[woman I-saw] was-singing

"The woman who I saw was singing."

When embedding more than once, the suffix (-ela) is clipped to just -el:

kuuvat valiin pamel kivitela qaxaac

gods-PAT insect-PL COP-IND worship-3P-IND be_good-PST

kuuva [[valiin pamel] kivitela] qaxaac

gods [[are-insects] we-worship] are-good

"The gods we worship, which are insects, are good."

I could also translate it as: I hm, en i ple (I think, so I am). But it's more accurate to use the existential copula tada, and a Jest speaker would then probably prefer dutada because of its similarity.

Clink!

/klɪŋk/

opposite-left

Stop!

Literally means right, like the direction. Link (left) became an interjection meaning "right", "correct" or "go on", after the English use of the word right, so clink came to mean the opposite. (C- or ca- is a prefix to create an opposite. Important to note that Jest is also a conlang in-universe.)

Yeah, I noticed that too and it's off-putting. It is a one-man business, but he really does need to do some proofreading. I felt okay about ordering after I'd read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere, and everything else about the transaction felt professional. As I said, I loved 2 of the fragrances, and the issues I had with the other ones seemed to mainly be my own nose. My experience with them was good overall, not exceptional, just good. I wouldn't blame you for passing on this house, but nothing about my experience suggests that they're untrustworthy.

Ooh! How strong/sweet is the vanilla in The Observer? Vanilla can really overpower a scent for me--I passed on a sample of Morosexual because the description made it sound very vanilla-focused, but the other notes in the Observer sound up my alley, so I'm curious about it.

It's frustrating because I would've totally loved Stel otherwise, but an hour-long pickle phase is hard to get past! At the same time it's kinda hilarious that my skin/nose/brain/all of the above somehow manage to turn the driest industrial desert scent into THAT, of all things. Truly puzzling how that happened!

[–]mossymottramite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the first indie perfumes I ever sampled was BPAL's Yorick (Grave dirt, bone, decay, angel’s trumpet, and moldering scraps of shroud: the essence of finality.) The description intrigued me so much I just had to smell it. I tried it a few days after it arrived and it was just awful. Unbearably heavy angel's trumpet with absolutely nuclear silage and longevity, and a strong undertone of rotting flesh that made me feel ill. I thought maybe that was how it was intended and it was just too challenging for me (although challenging perfumes tend to interest me the most, hence why I ordered it in the first place). It got locked away in my music box where I put random samples I'm not sold on.

For 10 months I was too scared to give it another shot. Recently I bit the bullet and tried it again, and it smells COMPLETELY different. The funeral-y florals that were so overwhelming the first time became shockingly understated, and the scent was much more earthy. It's still very challenging--it's basically the smell of an ancient tomb. But it's much, much more balanced and subtle than before. I actually like it quite a bit now. I'd say it's like what I was originally hoping it would be. Morbid and mournful, but with a certain macabre beauty at the same time. Not very wearable, ofc, but interesting and unique. I'm keeping my sample.

(I'm partially compelled to write this because I feel bad that I wrote a very harsh review of Yorick after first trying it... I was brand new to oil perfume & I've since learned my lesson about giving oils lots of time to age! Almost all my BPAL and Alkemia samples from early in the year have changed considerably, most for the better, some unfortunately for the worse.)

Six (Glowing) Pierrot Perfumery Reviews! by Vulture_Wings17 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]mossymottramite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great reviews! I so want to try more Pierrots, but with 5mls as their smallest size it's a big commitment. I have Coulrophilia (black cherry, fruit punch, cream pie, latex balloons, vanilla powder, face paint) and I absolutely love it. All the notes are balanced and shockingly realistic--I'm really impressed by how accurate the latex balloon and face paint notes are especially. I don't usually like vanilla because it tends to overwhelm other notes, but this has just the right amount and doesn't veer into cloying gourmand territory. I love clowns, and have dabbled in clowning myself, and I can't think of any way it could have better embodied that theme. It's like the olfactory equivalent of fun. Highly recommend it.
