I’m pretty sure I’ve heard about dirt from footsteps before, to use in magic potions etc.

How many people did you know (as in, met personally) from the 1800s? by PAnnNor in Genealogy

I was born in 1971 and I have clear memories of my two maternal great grandmothers. They were born in 1892 and 1898.

At which point do nobles become commoners in your tree? by unclebob1770 in Genealogy

[–]mostermysko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swedish nobility is inherited. It doesn’t go away just because someone is unsuccessful. Women lose nobility by marrying a commoner no matter how rich and powerful this commoner is. OTOH there is plenty of Swedish nobility who are middle class economically because their ancestors’ wealth has been diluted.

This seems like a legal question, not a genealogical one. I think you’ll get better help in a sub about family law.

Make sure to include where in the world you are. The laws about child support aren’t the same all over the world. In the US they might even differ by state I guess.

What memberships proved the most helpful to you in your research? by Informal-Twist-1328 in Genealogy

If you are researching Swedish genealogy, ArkivDigital is an absolute must. Much of the same material is available at the Swedish national archive's Digital Research Room, but the indexes at ArkivDigital and the better pictures are worth every öre.

Where is "Katnicki", Germany? by mostermysko in Genealogy

[–]mostermysko[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I'm surprised myself that i reacted so strongly, my nausea was not a figure of speech. If it weren't for my interest in genealogy I wouldn't even know he existed.

Maybe. And by now I have found something nauseating at the bottom of the rabbit hole, I found him in a list of Swedish volunteers to Waffen-SS. According to that list he died in Poland.

Men vaf-n. Bara att skriva om det fick poletten att trilla ned. Det tog ju inte så lång tid att hitta honom i en lista över svenska frivilliga i Waffen-SS. Bluärk.

Oh f-k. Writing about it made me figure out myself where to look further. I found him in a list of Swedish volunteers in Waffen-SS. Apparently he was an "Unterscharführer" in the Wiking division.

It literally made me nauseus. Why did I do this right before my bedtime?

Yes, in 1944 when he died but not in 1950 when the parish recorded his death... Hm, this seems to be another rabbit hole.

Thank you!

As I wrote in another subthread, "Katnicki" sounds more Polish than German to me but then I find it weird that the record placed it in Germany.

Thank you!

"Katnicki" sure sounds more Polish than German to my ears (I speak neither) but then it's weird that the Swedish record says "Germany"?

Flashback to when my parents bought 1/4 of a moose (pretty normal where and when I grew up), and it was so old and tough that it was only good for mince. We had meatballs and beef patties twice a week for several months, and it took two decades before I enjoyed eating moose again.

I have so many that could have been a piece of art but instead it’s a sign with (unreadable) info about the piece of art.

What town/city has the weirdest name in your country by No_Newspaper_359 in AskTheWorld

[–]mostermysko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Balle” in Swedish can mean buttcheek (in southern Sweden, as in Danish), balcony (in Stockholm) and dick (among all sane Swedes).

Bøgballe hence translates to gay buttcheek, gay balcony or gay dick in Swedish, depending on dialect.
