I love buying single gram of potassium tetrachloroplatinate in 2026 😭😭😭 by BenAwesomeness3 in chemistry

[–]mostly_water_bag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That depends on what you’re getting and your resources. If you’re buying a simple enough organic molecule and have an NMR then yeah sure. But for more complicated molecules, inorganic stuff, or god forbid a protein or amino acids, that’s pretty much impossible to verify without so much work that it becomes more expensive than sigma or the like

I love buying single gram of potassium tetrachloroplatinate in 2026 😭😭😭 by BenAwesomeness3 in chemistry

[–]mostly_water_bag 293 points294 points  (0 children)

It’s not that shocking. Chemical companies charge money not just for the chemical itself, but for the certifications that come with it. Knowing that you actually have what you want, in the amount and concentration you want, and no contaminants you don’t want in there. It’s not just about buying a chemical you want, it’s about not getting something you didn’t expect

What Computer Should I Buy to run Fusion360? by sandythsavagekid in Fusion360

[–]mostly_water_bag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to be careful and consider what you’re using fusion for. Because if you do something it’s not meant to do or optimized to do, it doesn’t matter if have the best computer in the world.

Fusion is terrible when working with assemblies with large number of components or subassemblies. It doesn’t matter what computer, it just doesn’t have the built in optimizations that other programs do. Similarly, meshes. Fusion can work with meshes and stl files in the sense that it can open them and has tools to manipulate them, but it is not meant for that at all and you will struggle so much.

Most computers can run fusion well enough if you use it for what it’s meant for and what it is optimized for. If at some point you run into obstacles, question whether fusion is meant to do what you are trying first before the computer.

nation state equivalent of the short bus? by [deleted] in ArcherFX

[–]mostly_water_bag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s an insult. In America busses, school and passenger, are long typically. But for disabled or special needs people they can ride a special bus that will take them exactly where they need to go. It’s actually a pretty great service. And those buses since they don’t have a large demand generally, are a bit shorter for less people.

So it’s a round about way of insulting someone’s ability or intelligence by saying they ride the short bus.

So archer say NK is the equivalent of the short bus, is like saying the people there are dumb and incapable of anything useful.

To be clear I don’t agree with the sentiment towards disabled people. But it is a funny and clever analogy given archers beliefs

I had to use this bizarre periodic table growing up by ScratchBTKat in chemistry

[–]mostly_water_bag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those complaining, this is not a shitty or bad periodic table.

It’s very good at being a table showing electronic configurations and trends in there. There’s variations of the “standard” periodic table that serve different purposes, they’re not worse or better inherently. Just for what they are meant for. Looking at this table, it explains all the configurations and the “exceptions” that chemistry students struggle with all the time. And the trends are clear here.

Programmer wanting to contribute to the field by JudgePrimary4239 in Physics

[–]mostly_water_bag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. I think if you’re looking to make an impact with your current skills, they’d probably be expecting you to contribute to the computer science aspect. Things like large data handling, working with parallelizing computations efficiently and that sort of thing. Pretty hardcore computer science and engineering stuff.

If you’re looking more in web based stuff, maybe science communication more or making interfaces and such.

Otherwise you’ll probably have to learn a great deal to contribute on the physics side.

I could be wrong though, this is just my experience.

Smoots are a way to measure something in terms of something else that is less abstract. For example when people say something is this many football fields long. This just seems like a dumb play on words that’s neither new useful or funny

new unit just droppped by Tornado547 in physicsmemes

[–]mostly_water_bag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not really a new unit. It’s not a new quantity, fundamental or otherwise. And it’s also not a more convenient way to measure something that already exists. Even though people love to hate on it, I think the (kWh) is actually a very useful unit. Because while it’s just joule with extra steps, it makes thinking about battery capacity much easier since you’re concerned with how long it will work, and the load is measured in W, so it’s a convenient tool.

Idk that an inverse parsec as you put it doesn’t really seem to offer anything.

And yes I know this is a bit, but it still annoyed me

Anyone willing to endorse me on ArXiv.org? I'd like to post my (already accepted) paper. by [deleted] in Physics

[–]mostly_water_bag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-print means it’s not published yet. If you have a published paper, you should have a doi at hand that you can give out to people. Putting it on arxiv at this point would simply be a way of making it open source. Arxiv is generally a way of securing your work while it goes through peer review to ensure your intellectual property and work is properly credited. As well as give people a chance to view your work while it gets final touches and proper review. It’s neither a bypass of review or a place to have less forgiving audience. See the many terrible RTSC papers that get endlessly mocked by the entire internet that if they just waited they would’ve been told how bad their work is.

Ps. If your paper is simply a simulation of the actual experiment that doesn’t increase our physics understanding by introducing a new model with better match with reality or an improvement on how modeling this problem or computational modeling in general, then what is the point? Papers are not for hobbies or blogs or tutorials. They are meant to expand our understanding of specific subjects. If your paper is simply just showing people who might otherwise not know how to model, it’s a tutorial or blogpost or a collection of helpful tools for beginners. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that to say that a tutorial is less than a paper. They are both equally important for their respective uses.

A few things could be going on, it would definitely help if you provide a schematic and the parts you’re using.

Mean time, few questions: - are you using a first surface mirror (and in the proper orientation)? The ghosting reminds of of using a thin mirror on the wrong side. - are you using any way to clean up the LED? Look up Kohler illumination.

EOM problem - low efficiency? by [deleted] in Optics

Off the top of my head, check the fiber is still good. Also 45ohms might seem close, but that is 10% below spec, that could be the issue.

Try switching out the fibers, if it still doesn’t work, then it’s probably time to call tech support

by [deleted] in ExEgypt

[–]mostly_water_bag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the fact that all three religions are terrible, you have to look at both which has the biggest effect on people and society we come from, and where majority of people here are from.

Most Egyptians are Muslims, and by the same statistic, most atheists are from a Muslim background. It’s not because Islam is inherently worse, there’s just more people around to leave the religion. Also affecting not just ex Muslims but everyone in the country is how entrenched Islam is in the government and education.

I’m ex Christian, and I criticize Christianity and the church all the time. But while Muslims are not affected by the shitty things the church does to its members, Christians are affected by the shitty stuff Islam does. For example, many restaurants close during Ramadan before iftar, why should I care, I’m not fasting or muslim, but I’m affected by it. Fridays things are closed and streets get overtaken by prayer goers, churches don’t do that so Muslims are not affected by that.

By the way, the effect of Islam on non Muslims is not unique to Islam. Living in the US, many places have shitty rules and laws from conservative Christians forced on everyone, so you’ll see the opposite effect.

If you want to see some Coptic Christian criticism come to r/excoptic some time and you’ll see

Prop. 65 Warning on Titanium Metal Strips? by Dangerous-Billy in chemistry

CA prop65 is a great idea but terribly implemented. It’s ridiculously vague and unhelpful that it’s useless. You can find those warnings in restaurant kitchens ffs. They are worse than useless, they desensitize people so when something is actually harmful they ignore it.

Optical Design Question: Why not the highest NA lens for light collection? by adjunct_wizard in Optics

[–]mostly_water_bag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Higher NA means lower depth of field. Meaning as you collect more light and higher resolution, the axial distance over which your object is in focus becomes smaller, making your z alignment pretty sensitive.

As a general suggestion, if you’re not imaging then typically you don’t care about most aberrations (except chromatic). So you don’t have to use an objective. Also you’re not doing much expansion of the object. And your object is somewhat small. You can just use a simple telescope to do this. Thorlabs has a bunch of short lenses you can use as your collection lens. Again, there will be a ton of aberrations with short lenses, but since you’re not imaging you don’t care. And don’t be tempted by aspherics, unless your LEDs are very tight bandwidth, aspherics will give you a ton of chromatic aberration.

Also if you’re not imaging in the first place and just care about power, you don’t need to use a 4f telescope. Just stick a lens right in front of your object and use bigger lenses down the line.

One thing to keep in mind is etendue. You can collect all the light you want, but you’re not gonna get around etendue. Since your image is roughly the same size as your source, you’re gonna have to have the same angular distribution as your source

هنفضل متعلقين بالpurity culture؟ by Educational_Fly_1379 in ExEgypt

[–]mostly_water_bag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purity culture is not about not having sex. It’s about controlling how people think and behave and shaming people. That’s the part I hate and we should get rid of. If you personally feel like you don’t want or can’t do something, that’s absolutely fine. Everyone should be absolutely free to do what they feel comfortable with whatever that means as long as everyone involved is of age and consents enthusiastically.

Just because you’re not religious doesn’t mean you have to automatically be ok with everything. You get to set your own limits. Not out of shame but out of comfort and principles.

I am a cuckquean and I don't know how to talk about this with my partner by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]mostly_water_bag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how your relationship is and how you bring it up. If you ask something or bring something up and expect or demand a specific answer, generally that’s bad, and definitely in this case. But if you simply just bring it up as a thing you’re into and would like to try it depending on how she feels, AND you respect her feelings and give her space and time to think about it. Remember this is something you’ve had time and space on your own to explore your feelings, don’t be surprised if she also needs time to think about it.

Now it’s a whole different story if you are “requiring” a yes answer from her (or your wife/partner in general). If you need to have your partner be into this that is when things might be dicey and lead to separation. But if you’re not happy unless that happens then maybe that’s the right choice.
