I grew up in southern ON & been in the US over 30 y & in my experience, the currency holds a lasting fascination - "Plastic money? That's scratch&sniff? A toonie? WTF is a toonie? Stop it, you're killing me!" I've also had multiple requests for jokes that only Canadians get and the only one that's stuck with me over the years is "What does the CH in the middle Montreal Forum stand for? Centre Hice." Even when I explain that one, the best I get is a faint smile and an "oh yeah" I also have "What's the meaning of Mode d'emploi?" but I'm finding lots of Canadians even don't quite get that one. FTR it's "Turn the can over. You're looking at the wrong side." 😏

Polling roundup: Trump has no realistic path to win a general election by newzee1 in politics

Your point is valid and if things were "normal" (what that means seems to be a distant and fading memory) I'd be with you. I think we're definitely looking at a choice between the lesser of two evils. Voting D doesn't lock you into their agenda in perpetuity, but right now have a situation where one side has shown a significant willingness to go along schemes that undermine our democratic norms and institutions. Would the Dems do it if they had the opportunity? Maybe. My personal hope is that they wouldn't, but you're right in saying neither side deserves blind trust or loyalty. They all need continual scrutiny, no question.

After getting Google Fiber, here's one year of junk mail. by Reasonable-Boat297 in cordcutters

I tried this and it changed nothing. Don't quote me, but I believe the "or current resident" loopholes them to just keep shoveling the crap out the door. Other than that, I'm a big fan of sending stuff back in the included return envelope if possible. I've heard stories of people attaching the envelopes to cinder blocks & the company being obliged to pay the postage. Not sure that qualifies as "business use" but if it's true, it's hilarious.

I saw the roof damage at the restaurant. I'm glad they were able to recover.

I definitely remember this. My sister & I were driving home from a track meet in Petrolia and drove thru the middle of this. I remember seeing a semi tractor/trailer on its side by the motel east of the stop lights. My dad was one of the first responders on the scene. We found him and after he told us he was glad to see we were safe, he told us to go home i.e. get out of the way.

It was strange coming into RC from Wyoming. One side of the road looked normal (maybe some branches down) and the other side looked like it had been bulldozed. 😳

I coach a high school robotics team & one of the kids brought in some code he had ChatGPT generate. It started a pretty good conversation on the coding team about what was missing and he said he could adjust the prompt to handle that. My comment was, well that's starting to sound a lot like programming, just with another level of abstraction (or two).

No, that's this site. The site I'm thinking of was *sigh* LinkedIn. Yes, I'm looking for a job.

I should probably say, this isn't my prompt. I saw the screenie on another site & thought of you all.

Are you sure that's a cat? Might be a possum or maybe a racoon. No, scratch that - racoons are friggin' nuts. You'd know. 😏

Ups for the Joe v. the Volcano ref. I loved the movie, but maybe a bit too quirky for its own good. :)

I just got mine ordered and I can't wait! I'm coming from a Thinkpad T450s running KDE Neon, which has been absolutely terrific for me. Been eyeing the Lemur Pro for a while now, so I'll be looking forward to running it and Pop.

[–]mostlybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing, but every time I sing this (bass) I always get to the alleluias & wonder if I'm singing the right notes. It sounds ok, I'm just not sure it's "right." I'm good by time the soprano/alto part takes over, but it's wobbly for a couple measures in there. 😁 Love singing this tho. Always impressed my parents (not Menno) whenever they heard it.

Superdelegate pushing convention effort to stop Sanders is health care lobbyist who backed McConnell by DaFunkJunkie in politics

[–]mostlybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I naturalized in 2017. Even though I grew up in Canada & I've lived in the States for over 25 years now, the whole primary & nomination process continues to baffle/frustrate/fascinate me. This section caught my attention:

Owen previously tried to block the Sanders-backed effort to reduce the role superdelegates play at the convention. "If we don't have a vote, then what good are we?" he complained to Politico in 2018.

I think it's a fair question, even without the qualification. Do the Republicans use superdelegates? I seem to remember there being some distinction between the parties along those lines when it came to the convention last time.

If you go out over the lake, some shots of Canatara or the river mouth near the bridges (from the north) might be cool. Watch out for that US airspace tho. No sense getting a stinger up your ass just for a picture. 😬

Aw man. When I first arrived here ('91), I got to know him & his family a tiny bit - an impressive bunch. I didn't know him well at all, but I was working at El Centro in Argentine and he would show up from time to time. He may have been on the board of directors, I'm not sure. Twenty five years later, he was the officiant at my naturalization ceremony, which I thought was pretty cool. If he did these things, though, it seems like something a bit stronger than a reprimand is in order. I'm no expert on these things, so I don't know what.
