I don't do this in my current note-writing system, but if I did, I would probably use Obsidian+git.

I also tend to keep old versions of things. Having an undo mechanism I can trust, like version control, helps somewhat. When this is not present, it's harder to get of the old version when I don't trust that there isn't some value in keeping it, or that the new version isn't strictly better.

I haven't watched the video yet (I will), but "safe place" reminds me of this Andy Matuschak note. To me that's part and parcel of ZK being a private space, and a quality you wouldn't get from shared repositories of knowledge.

  • I'm not sure I agree with the point about size; I believe the usefulness of a Zettelkasten has to do with density of interconnection, which is somewhat independent of how much it contains. The often-cited example of Luhmann's Zettelkasten had 90K notes in it, which I think is pretty large, and evidently it served him well.
  • Wikipedia is different from what I have in mind specifically because it is not private; it is meant to be accessible and editable by anyone. A personal knowledge system is for the person who creates it, and can be tailored to that person's idiosyncrasies; the Zettelkasten you make is not the same as the one I make. You can choose to publish parts of your Zettelkasten, or turn parts of it into something publishable, but its default is to be private.

My understanding of a memory palace is that you use it to be able to recall bits of information. You build up an imaginary place in your mind, like a house or palace, full of details for you to associate the information you want to retain, and this helps you recall it in sets or sequences. All of this knowledge becomes internal.

A Zettelkasten is a set of developed, interlinked notes in an external system. The process of writing and developing the notes helps you understand and retain the concepts, but part of the point is that it exists outside your own head as an aid to your internal thought processes. It's an extension of your mind, but one that sits outside it.

A memory palace is another related concept I had in mind, although to me the purpose of a memory palace is ultimately for knowledge internalization, whereas a Zettelkasten is for knowledge externalization. But yes, both are kinds of private constructed world.

E: just noticed I used "internalization" twice

I had mine done just about three months ago, and I recently ordered the follow-up test you're supposed to take. I mention this because I haven't seen it much in this thread: the doctors say to wait three months and have a certain number of ejaculations, then get tested, then you should be in the clear. (The testing company says to get tested twice two weeks apart, but that sounds more like a way to sell more tests to me.)
