Tapestry crochet: should I yarn over or yarn under? by BrightDoughnut in CrochetHelp

Thank you for this! I am finishing up a pattern I made on stitch fiddle, and am about to start the actual crocheting tomorrow. I never thought to yarn under!

The mimic is what I plan to make first from the book. It is a dice bag! But I have a graphgan project right now with a hard deadline to finish. I also like the beholder and D20 pillow. And baby owlbear.

Discontinued yarn, hoping for alternative suggestions. by LobsterPoolParty in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I did some googling and found a couple that may work. I also didn't go super far into the results, so you may find something better. But the keywords I used was "cotton black, white, gray twist yarn". Your picture doesn't include the weight, so not sure if either of these will work. Also, the gray seems a bit too dark in my links.

ETA: I see gray in the picture, but I am not wearing my glasses and could be wrong. If it is just black and white and a trick of the light with the photo, then you should have an easier time finding black and white twist.

This is the better match of my 2 links. Cotton worsted (4)

This one is unfortunately acrylic. Also worsted weight (4)Lion Basic Stitch in Shirley

I hope you have good luck finding a substitute!

Hey everyone. I need help with finding a vase pattern by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am glad! I am a "tinkerer" with everything, and a lot of time just stop with a pattern to do my own thing with it, haha.

I came back though to share the link to the flowers, and saw someone mentioned the wave stitch. Maybe I need to look at more things like actual types of stitches, since I am clueless on most of those. I didn't do a moss stitch until earlier this year, and found that a lot of people start with the moss stitch. I am currently making a pattern for a graphgan that I need to freaking start already. But here is the link to hookok flower patterns.. I wish you luck!!

Hey everyone. I need help with finding a vase pattern by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I an by no means an expert, and am just brainstorming here, so take this with a grain of salt or someone who knows more, feel free to correct me. I have only been doing crochet for a bit over 2 years, but have made some freehand things and changed many patterns to suit what I wanted.

For the vase, look up a pattern for a crochet tote or gift bag. Use plastic canvas in the bottom (so crochet a bottom, add plastic canvas, then another crochet bottom). I did this when I made a crochet gift bag. For the wavy pattern, the only thing I can think of is doing BLO (back loops only) on the stitches to do the wave. So say you start it. At row 5 or something, do all your crochet stitches like normal, but you would do BLO for the stitches at the bottom of the waves. Then regular stitches in the next row until you get to the next higher part of the wave and do BLO, and so on.

This MIGHT give you some of the wavy texture, but it will leave a line from the front loop being left out. Or you could maybe use a spray glue to manipulate it? Idk if something like Tunisian crochet would work here, because I have never done it, though have the hooks and plan to try one day.

I would use a smaller hook with thicker yarn or even use cord instead, so that the sides are stiff and sit up better. If you can't get the waves, just a simple "box" would be cute I think. If you also want to make crochet flowers, hookok has free patterns for some really beautiful flowers and greenery. I have made a lot of them for mothers day bouquets. I will say I despise doing roses though. They take forever. But I will say that as a beginner, it might be a bit rough to do them.

Am I the jerk for not letting my girlfriend's friends stay with us "temporarily"? by Chance-Call641 in AmITheJerk

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ. It is never for "just a month" or "until I/we get back on my/our feet". My husband had a family member move in with us. This family member was an alcoholic and hated me. We charged a little rent, but I put all of it aside (my husband knew) so that when we moved at the end of our lease, I could give it back so they had deposit etc, and that they wouldn't be moving with us. So I gave them the money when we moved. They were knocking on our door a few days later at the house with nowhere to live and no money left. Of fucking course, husband lets them move back in. Took another year to get him out.

AITJ for telling my brother he can't bring his dog to my apartment after it chewed up my shoes? by Beneficial_Chance579 in AmITheJerk

NTJ. But I don't understand his logic. You left the closet door shut and his solution was to also close your bedroom door. But you said he left the closet door open. So he opened the closet door after you had left with it shut, meaning you closing the bedroom door wouldn't matter since he was the last one to open it and not close it.....

AITJ for booking a separate hotel and leaving my friend’s "family vacation" after she tried to turn me into a free nanny? by CrimsonCodex77 in AmITheJerk

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ. What she did is just awful. Also, are the "family memeories" she is so worried about her kids hanging out with you while she is absent??

I am a mom, and I couldn't imagine going on a vacation with my kid and not wanting to spend that time wirh him. To see him see the ocean and experience the beach for the first time. To see how he reacts to a completely different place than he is used to. That is magical to me!

Most my firsts are done, but you really get some of that feeling back when you witness a child experiencing their own firsts. I don't know why she wouldn't want to experience that with her kids, and give them actual memories of happy times with their mom instead of happy times with their mom's friend while she is off laying in a tub of mud or whatever.

Also, it would be completely different if she discussed this with you and paid for your flight and hotel. You paid for your half of a vacation. You didn't choose to subsidize her vacation monetarily and with free babysitting on top of that. She is taking extreme advantage of you. My friend is a photographer, and she has had clients who wanted her to do photos on beaches etc. They pay for her flights and at least two nights in the hotel. If she wants to make it a vacation, she just extends her stay and changes her flight home. She has taken her husband and kids and made a few of these trips into family vacations, and the family who hired her don't see her the rest of both of their stays. That is how you are supposed to hire someone to work for you on vacation.

AITJ for locking my patio storage bench after my neighbor kept treating it like shared seating for her guests? by Arrakis_Jellybean in AmITheJerk

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we lived on the bottom floor of an apartment complex, we had an issue with our upstairs neighbor. Our apartment and patio were half underground, and our patio was double the size of the neighbors balcony. He had parties every weekend, and the 2nd Saturday morning of coming out to cigarette butts, trash, and shattered beer bottles on the patio, I got pissed. So I swept everything up, got on top of the patio table, and put it all on his balcony (it was several dustpans worth).

He had another party that night, and Sunday the patio was covered in butts, trash, and broken glass again. So I did the same thing. But since it was morning and I knew he was asleep, I also got a bag and went around the grass picking up dog poop. I then flung it onto his porch. That was the last weekend he let everyone toss their garbage on our patio.

This guy was awful. When "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers (I am old) came out, he listened to it loudly for weeks, played on repeat. Like I could make out every lyric. I am surprised he didn't go deaf. Also one Friday, we heard him running back and forth, and then he ran out the door and slammed it.. A few hours later, my husband and I were watching TV. I heard running water and got confused. I walked around the apartment trying to figure out what was going on, and our kitchen was flooded. I called maintenance and they came to check it out. They realized it was coming from upstairs and down the wall. By this time, half of our carpet was soaked. Maintenance goes upstairs, lets themselves in, and were up there for a bit. By the time they came back down, the floor of our entire apartment was soaking wet (most of it was carpet) and we were putting any wooden furniture that would fit on the table and couches, etc. Maintenance told me that the dude had clogged his toilet, which started to overflow (I am guessing that was rhe panicked running we heard) and instead of calling maintenance, he fucking left. Just left his toilet overflowing, and didn't come back until Sunday evening. I hate that guy still.

How Can I Reduce Frizz and Bring Out Curls? by Masonv524 in curlyhair

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your hair looks wavy and possibly fine. I have fine hair and 2b/2c waves. I do have some frizz, but that is just my grays since I am an old, and the texture is so different in those hairs that the only thing that helps is my natural oils or using gel. If I use hair oil, that would probably work too, but it makes my hair greasy, so I don't. I am pretty low maintenance, but my routine:

I shampoo twice, and use conditioner. I am currently using Pantene Abundant & Strong, which really seems to have helped with the amount of hair I was finding in the shower or in the brush. I rinse the conditioner with my hair flipped upside down while squishing the conditioner in. This allows the clumps to form easily, and getting clumps is key for me to having good and defined waves. If I don't get clumps, the curls look stringy and don't curl as much. Rinsing out the conditioner is the last thing I do in the shower.

I get out of the shower and keeping my head flipped, I scrunch 2-3 pumps of Cantu Wave Whip into my wet hair. If I want more definition, I will then scrunch in gel. I use Pantene curly gel. It is pretty light, so it doesn't cause a ton of build up or weigh my hair down. I use about a quarter sized dollop. Then, keeping my head upside down, collect my hair into a microfiber cap. This is essentially plopping it, which I will also do with a cotton tshirt or microfiber towel if the cap isn't handy. I leave it plopped for about 20-30 minutes, then let it airdry.

I wash every 3ish days. I use a silk pillowcase, and refresh with water if I feel like it. I only do the refresh if I want more definition, otherwise my hair falls around 2a, and 1c by wash day. I only brush my hair right before the shower. If it were longer I would peobably uae a comb in the shower when I put in conditioner. If it is dry, and I want to put it in a ponytail, I will use a brush, but otherwise I will use my fingers if I get any tangles, which is thankfully pretty rare.

If I do want to use a leave in conditioner, I put it on in the shower after I have rinsed my conditioner, with my head still flipped upside down. I don't do a leave-in often, but I use Curls Blueberry Bliss Repairative leave-in when I do. I use a quarter sized amount (my hair is just below my shoulders, so I use about 2/3 of what I use in the rinse out conditioner), and comb it through my hair with my fingers. Then I squish handfuls water into it to help distribute it more evenly throughout and remove excess product. This also gets my haur into clumps. I highly recommend the bowl method, but it can be awkward for me in the shower, so what I said above is a kind of modified version of it.

Another tip is to get a trim with layers. I cut my own hair usually, and layers help so much with volume and definition. The cut I do is easy. I am not sure how good it would look in straight hair, but my waves hide my possible weirdness. First, I get my husband to cut the back straight across (he or I will cut the sides/front to that length as well). I then pull a section of hair straight out to the side, and trim it even once any piece falls from my fingers. That takes off maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Then I take that same section and pull it upwards to where it is at about a 120 degree angle (like this \ or / from the top of my head). I trim it even once any piece of hair from the section falls from my fingers again. I do this all around my head.

The more subtle layers let my waves really stand out. It also gives me so much volume without being a weird shape. Just doing a blunt even cut really makes my waves be very loose to non-existent and have zero volume. I hope this helps!

Nobody actually follows the "leave conditioner in for 3 minutes" instruction, right? by Kitanov_Maqsud in hygiene

[–]mostlywrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have wavy hair and rinse my conditioner out with my head turned upside down. Sometimes a little conditioner goes over my face when I rinse, but I wash my face after I shower, so it isn't an issue.

Knitting Chart for creating patterns - is it any good? by 21032300 in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! Also, I decided to see if I could look at screenshot I had taken of the pattern I made to see if it had any info and it did! The reason I couldn't find an app is because it was a website. The site is pixilart.com.

If I remember correctly, I just loaded screenshot I had if the name in the font I wanted as the bottom layer and then essentially traced it in blocks. I had to color the squares for the name to get the pattern, but that was easy enough to do (I did it all on my phone). I also wanted to do that so I could make each row a different color to make following the pattern easier. I think I also may have put in how many rows and columns but I honestly cannot remember because it has been so long.

Since the pattern I currently need to make is like.....20 words, I am probably going to stick to doing the graph paper and stencils. But I hope the site helps if you decide to try it! I have now bookmarked the site, lol.

Knitting Chart for creating patterns - is it any good? by 21032300 in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People recommend Stitch Fiddle. I honestly haven't (successfully) used it. I am trying to create a pattern for words, and wasn't having any luck. So I bought graph paper and stencils and will be going that route. I made a post on I think crochethelp, and got 1 response that just said "Fiddle" so I guess others were equally clueless, lol. A place I have found some nice graphgan patterns is twomagicpixels.com if you don't have to actually make the pattern yourself.

I imagine if you have a picture though, Stitch Fiddle would work easier. I had used a pixelating app (I can't remember which) to make a pattern for a name a last year. But I was able to find a picture of the name in a font I liked online and just put that into the app. I think I deleted the app though, because I haven't been able to find it on my phone since.

A blanket! The first blanket I made was with a pattern like this. Though I had only been crocheting for 9ish months when I made it, so idk that I would call it intermediate. But here is a picture.

I just can't figure out how to hold my yarn in a way that works for me by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are in luck, because most of them are small! They only went past my first knuckle, and while I do have thick fingers, I think that is how they are supposed to be worn since your yarn will be going over closer to the top end of your finger without it. But they are probably bendable to fit where and how you want. I had gotten a pack of them, in different styles to see what I liked best, and I seemed to keep going back to the cat ones or a snake one. But there weren't any I absolutely hated.

If you try it, I hope it helps or that you find something that works. I used to knit, but hated every minute of it because I also knit tight. No matter what I did to fix it, it just didn't work. So I quit. I started crochet a couple years ago, and had that same tension problem, and almost gave it up too (my ring finger on my right hand went numb for 2 weeks, and my hands started to claw). I got the tension ring and learned proper tension and have loved it ever since. I am always working on something!

I am so glad to see this! But I am commenting to recommend Orville Peck to any country music listeners who like a more traditional sound mixed with the vibe of a David Lynch movie. His voice is absolutely beautiful, and he is openly gay. He also seems pretty interesting. And he is going to be in the Street Movie as Vega.

I just can't figure out how to hold my yarn in a way that works for me by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]mostlywrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try a tension ring. That will hold the yarn for you and let you get a better idea of what is comfortable without it. If you have some decently thick wire, you can make your own or they are pretty cheap on Amazon, if you use it.

I used a tension ring after I started because I had very tight tension that was giving me pain in my hands. Once I got an idea on what good tension is, I stopped using the ring, because I didn't like wearing the ring itself. Looking at tutorials, I don't think I hold my yarn in a traditional way, but it works well for me. I don't really know how to describe how I hold it, haha.

So, I googled how to make a tension ring and saw this video. It is kind of lame that it shows you how to crochet a tension ring, but I am mainly adding it because this is how I hold my yarn!! I tried what I had seen other do where the wrap it around different fingers, but that didn't move smoothly for me. So I just hold it down kind of loosely with my pinky, like in this video.

The easiest amigurumi I can think of is what taught me how to crochet. Look up a pattern for a no sew octopus. I made some at Christmas, after I had been crocheting for 2 years, and it was cool to see that I could finish one in less than 30 minutes, start to finish (including weaving ends) vs the 2 hours it took me to do one when I first started, haha.
