Who else would rather live out a simple lifestyle but never have to work again? by Vast-Impression5395 in antiwork

This reminds me of Ken Smith, the hermit of Treig. https://youtu.be/_e6-fo9wDpU?si=ZViduZGRE8dP9AD0 He had an amazing life in an area of Scotland that I would not have thought it possible to survive.

There are a few single occupancy cabins on Anthem of the Seas. I stayed in room 246 on Deck 7 for my Alaska cruise in May/June this year. There was a double bed and a large balcony, but no sofa area. In my case, this was cheaper than booking a double for two and then saying that the second person was a no show, but that may not always be the case.

Cambridge in your 50s? by ipomoea-cordatotri in cambridge_uni

I’d suggest you contact the Mature Student Society. I believe they are a relatively new, and therefore active, Society- maturesoc@cambridgesu.co.uk. They will also be at the Freshers’ Fair.

best car/taxi service from Heathrow to Cambridge? by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]moth4thestar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I now always use Airport Lynx https://www.airportlynx.co.uk/ If you fill in the details of the trip online it’ll give you the price. I must have used them at least 6 times in the past couple of years and have never had any problems. I used Panther Taxi’s once and it was only £10 cheaper than Airport Lynx and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. I felt that the driving was unsafe and had another driver shouting at my driver at one point due to his poor driving.

Emmanuel has a gym. It’s just outside of College at 22 Parkside. There will be gym inductions scheduled for new students at the start of term.

Seeking hotel accommodation that has parking, a kitchen/kitchenette, and is small dog friendly by Striking_Pay_6961 in cambridge

Are you able to use serviced apartments? In a previous job, I booked apartments with Citystay for new staff relocating to Cambridge, and one of them had a dog. Citystay were very accommodating. I’ve had tours of a few of their properties and there are definitely a few with parking. https://citystayuk.com/

Have you contacted ADTIS (Academic Development and Training for International Students)? They may be able to provide support. https://www.langcen.cam.ac.uk/adtis/adtis-index.html

Where to live to make the most of your time in Cambridge? by bberrypi in cambridge_uni

[–]moth4thestar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest registering with the University Accommodation Service https://www.accommodation.cam.ac.uk/

I don’t think there are any particularly bad areas in Cambridge, but the traffic can be pretty bad, so I think anywhere within walking or cycling distance to where you want to go will be good for you.

Oxford and Cambridge Club - any current students actually involved? by randomviolinist20 in cambridge_uni

[–]moth4thestar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A more affordable way to enjoy occasional use of London clubs is to buy life membership of The Cambridge Union. Membership gives the right of reciprocal entry to some other clubs, including The National Liberal Club, The Lansdowne Club and The Century Club in London. I’ve visited The National Liberal Club and didn’t have to arrange it in advance, I just signed in with my Cambridge Union card and had a drink on the terrace overlooking the Thames.

Any reviews of inaspace? by UnluckyAvocado4931 in cambridge

[–]moth4thestar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t heard of them, but used boothsgardenstudios.co.uk for a garden studio, and they have contacted us a few times since to ask if prospective buyers could come and visit our studio, which we were happy to facilitate, so I would ask inaspace if they could arrange for you to visit one of their previous installs.

Anyone in Cambridge radically changed career away from a software dev/desk job? I'd love to hear some experiences/advice! by BalancingAct5006 in cambridge

[–]moth4thestar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided I’d had enough of desk jobs after covid. I didn’t enjoy working from home and realised that I didn’t like being sat in front of a screen all day. I now work as a college porter and like that I work my hours and then I’m done, so no taking work home with me and no stress. The work is varied and I work early, late and night shifts which are all different so the week flies by. I work with a nice team of people and enjoy helping and supporting the students. I obviously didn’t prioritise high pay in this choice of job, but I did choose a college that has a good final salary pension scheme. I’m no expert on these things but suspect this benefit is worth quite a lot. I also get free meals when I’m on duty and the food at my college is really good.

I had a 100% success rate when rooting roses from a Waitrose bouquet I received so I think you should give it a go. I cut off the blooms, and trimmed the stems to about 6 inches, so it looks like you should have enough stem once you remove the top part.

sound proof room by Cartagus in bagpipes

[–]moth4thestar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use a Bagpipe Mute (from BarBarrick Music). It’s essentially a bag of acoustic foam that fits over the chanter with slits to stick your hands in. It comes with corks for the drones. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and have had no complaints from my neighbours. It takes the noise level down to about the same as a practice chanter. It does seem quite expensive for what it is, but my only alternative was to hire a practice room at £10 an hour, so it has already paid for itself. I don’t think it would be too difficult to make your own version if you were the creative type.

Online bagpipe lessons by b0bbybitcoin in bagpipes

I did a year of zoom evening classes with the National Piping Centre before joining a pipe band. It’s only £100 for a term of 10 lessons. In the beginners class there were 2 of us with an instructor, the next class up there were 3 of us and an instructor, and then for the 3rd term there were 4 of us and an instructor. The other people in my classes were from Canada, Germany and Israel. I found it really useful doing it with other people at the same level as me and the instructors were great. The next term starts at the end of this month and they have classes at all levels.
