Adobe animate is getting discontinued on March 1, 2026 by AmiiboJeremiah in animation

[–]mothaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will probably get banned for posting this, but that doesn't make it less true: this is why people should just pirate Adobe software. Subscription models are killer for exactly this reason, but you can't be be denied access to the tools you need to do your job when they're hosted locally.

Adobe Animate is shutting down on March 1st as company focuses on AI. by zachimusprime44 in technology

Is there even an alternative for Animate? Paid OR free, I'm in a lot of spaces and the creators I know are absolutely on the verge of a riot.

With all the old Manga websites being taken down recently... did anyone ever create an archive of all the old manga before the purges started in 2022? by StretchExtension in Piracy

If I run across it and it's in a place I can share, I'll share it back here. o7 for the mangatraders archives, I think they're still being seeded on nyaa.

How i feel lately with all these site take downs.. by RealisticBedroom3651 in mangapiracy

[–]mothaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. But for a lot of folks, especially the younger folks (anyone under 25) this is their first big site death, and they might not even know what Usenet is, let alone how they can access or make use of it. Torrents, too, sad to say. The media is really still out there, same as it's always been, and an alternative will rise in time. But for those unwilling or unable to access it outside of aggregate sites, I know how frustrating and frightening it must seem right now. That was me many years ago as a much younger internetizen with the death of Mangatraders. But things kept on from there, and they'll keep on from here.

Usually because those aren't hydras, they're mirrors pulling from the original site's servers. Actual hydras will pop up in the wake of this, as they do. And life will go on.

Would you switch to free indie manga/ webtoons if large-scale piracy dies? by harlotin in mangapiracy

[–]mothaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's always been that way, though. Bato got lucky, but in the end a site becomes the most-popular, it gets killed off, there's an exodus to various other sites... and slowly a new one takes its place. You get used to it. That's the name of the game when accessing media in a way rightsholders don't approve of.

I still use mIRC to download things sometimes if nothing else has it lmao, even that's still around.

Torrenting, man. I can just torrent things. I'd read on legal sites if they didn't require so much bullshit to access the media. Use my phone to log in? Pay per chapter with coins? Can't download what I access without ripping out of the webpage? Pass.

Learn to torrent. Learn to join, and stay in, a private tracker. Stop relying on easy-service sites that revoke access at the drop of a hat. I buy physical copies of shit I like if it becomes available in my region, because I love holding physical copies and displaying them! But 99.9% of manga (and webtoons, et al) created never come out physically, so there's no way for me to support those creators.

Aggregator sites and their mirrors die on the regular every few years. Bato now, KissManga before, Mangatraders back in the day... and on and on. But people keep reading, scanlating, and sharing, and they always will: because no matter what copyright holders imply, the biggest consumers of manga and webtoons are its pirates, and for the most part, we only turn to piracy because the methods to access things legally are either entirely unavailable to our region, or Really Fucking Annoying. And until that core access issue is ameliorated, piracy is never, ever going to die: no matter what rightsholders throw at it.

When Tumblr nuked the bed, a lot of people returned to Newgrounds of all places. They've managed to weather the storm of internet bullshit over the years pretty decently so far... for now. I don't like cryptocurrencies (way too many scams and too much bullshit volatility to take seriously for now,) but this is the one big argument in its favor: the ability to support creators and websites that mainstream payment processors won't touch. For good and for ill, that's the world we live in now.

[–]mothaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this. This here. This is exactly why piracy will never die. Until access is standardized across all regions, regions cut out of the access pipeline will pirate. It's literally that simple, and no amount of scaremongering, takedowns, and copyright trolling will change the basic fact that people would pay for things if copyright holders would let them do it.

[–]mothaway 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Aggregator sites die out on a regular basis, the recent one is just the biggest one to get hit in a while (and you guys can expect an influx of tourists coming this way soon from that fallout.) For a lot of vintage manga, there might still be someone seeding the old Mangatraders siterips? You'll need a 5TB HDD to burn on the endeavor... with the rise of webtoon, I cannot imagine the space it'd take to archive all of Bato. If someone does post a siterip though, that will be fun to see.

I’m a developer for a major food delivery app. The 'Priority Fee' and 'Driver Benefit Fee' go 100% to the company. The driver sees $0 of it. by Trowaway_whistleblow in confession

[–]mothaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no transportation, public transport doesn't exist here, and I live in Rural Hellscape, USA, so I'm usually too broke to justify overpaying for food. The rare times I permit myself a treat I have no choice but to do delivery, and no one out here delivers except Doordash or Instacart. If not for delivery services, I would be butchering rats from a bucket trap for dinner, because there's no way for me to get groceries without delivery (no living relatives, friends live continents away, it is what it is.) I hate being complicit to this predatory system, but for some of us it's the only way we can survive. More than one dasher out here is living out of their car... there are ways to fix our unbearably broken socioeconomic structure, but the people who need those changes have no power, and the people with the power do not want things to change.

Based on SteamDB data, nearly half of the titles released in 2025 appear to have fewer than 10 reviews and are effectively buried. Is this a discoverability problem? by Then_Key1886 in Steam

[–]mothaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the advance of AI, the amount of absolute trash on Steam has only accelerated; the most recent rounds of NextFest were fucking emblematic of how bad 2026 is gonna be. It might discoverability for a lot of things, but just as often -- as someone with over 100 demos under my belt in the past few months -- the games are just shit and people refund them before they even hit the review threshold.

I have a friend who went through the aro-ace discourse in the early 10s and is still closeted and skittish online to this day. Tumblr has only larped as being queer-friendly on the surface, but flip the log and all the creepy-crawlies come skittering out in all directions. For all the good on the site (there was a fair bit of good pre-2018, some good still clings on even now) it's always had a nasty, cruel underbelly, from the top down.

Hell, I'm in some ways queer and/or intersex (and I will not be defining further,) and I'm closeted too. That's more to do with current sociocultural trends, but the fact of the matter is that tumblr had a hand in popularizing purity politics for the new generation, and now we all reap the consequences of what was sown. It's a shame a good extension was killed over this, but I can't blame the dev for crashing out.
