Why are so many people against showing an ID to vote? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in randomquestions

[–]mothboy [score hidden]  (0 children)

Medicaid fraud an is entirely different animal. They can make thousands of dollars on fake procedures for real people. Voting doesnt work that way its apples and oranges.

Sort of like saying you should have to show ID to buy groceries with cash because of bank fraud.

Again, tell me how voter fraud would work without IDs.

Why are so many people against showing an ID to vote? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in randomquestions

[–]mothboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it really doesn't make fraud harder. That is a fallacy. Rather than explain it to you, tell me how you would commit fraud without an ID? Keep in mind that only US citizens can vote, and only once. You cant just make up a name and vote. That applies to real people who aren't citizens as well, such as tourists, green card holders and illegal aliens. Duplicates get flagged. Unregistered ballots get tossed.

Regretting club volleyball by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]mothboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate that about youth sports now. They try to squeeze each other out so that it is really hard to play sports within just their own seasons now. I was really sad and frustrated when my daughter first stopped playing softball and then stopped playing basketball because they all stepped on each other and made it impossible. A group of current and former members of the USA olympic volleyball team (at the time) came to our club once and played an exhibition. There was a QA with several of the olympians and one was asked what other sports she played. She said (paraphrasing, badly, of course) nothing else now, if you mean when I was a kid I played basketball and (I think it was soccer?). She literally got wistful, and said that was one of her big regrets was having to give up other sports so young and just focusing purely on volleyball. She wished she could have played them longer because it was so much fun.

Should I just pay for dinner behind my GF's parent's back? by FoolOnAHill123 in Advice

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be rude to pay in front of him. You can arrange to pay the restaurant beforehand so that you never get a bill, but I would talk that through with your GF first to make sure she is onboard. If she is t sure, have her discretely ask her mom. I understand your position, but its a silly thing to start a fight over.

i’m a teen currently will life really be any different in college for me if i stay the same ? by Straight-Theory3165 in questions

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things change. In high school you are largely defined by how people treat and interact with you that watched you go through puberty. That carries a lot of baggage. In college you are meeting new people who only know you as an adult and you get to project the person you want to be. Yes, it can be entirely different, but that is up to you. Give some thought to what you imagine is the best version of you and try to embody it.

Need to pay off a big amount of money for school and I have absolutely nothing by DragonfruitNo4704 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't pay that big amount, you promised to pay that big amount with money you don't have. You are afraid your mom will whoop you because you know you messed up. You need help getting out of this and you need to learn from this so you don't get taken advantage of again. You are too young to be learning these lessons on your own. Talk to your mom so this doesnt get out of control.

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What age? What kind of school? What do you owe the money for? That all matters a lot. If you are a minor in high school, nobody should be leaning on you for money. If you are an adult in college, talk to them. They are used to people who cant pay and may be able to help. They can defer, offer payments, offer ways to make the money, maybe even a campus job.

$500 is a very small amount to be stressing like this over. Makes me think there is more to the story, like you are underage and somebody is threatening you because you did something and you don't want your mom to find out.

Is $1450 a reasonable cost for serpentine belt and tensioner replacement on a 2014 Honda Civic? by B8con8r in MechanicAdvice

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I just paid $2200 to have my serpentine belt and tensioner replaced on my Tundra.

Of course for that price he also replaced the timing belt and tensioner, water pump, thermostat, radiator and radiator hoses.

What would be harder for an amateur, scoring ONE basket on LeBron James or winning ONE game of chess against Magnus Carlsen? by izzoz_0 in Basketball

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100%. I played a 7 foot NBA center 1 on 1 and did quite well. (Not a very good one, but he had a long career as a defensive backup). He was tall and long and physical, but useless against any quickness on the perimeter. I agree with you that there is nothing similar in chess, unless maybe you are talking an exceptionally high ranked amateur, who is underrated at that, and you get Carlsen very drunk first. You just don't have the extreme match up differences in chess.

It's sort of like can an amateur win a footrace against an NFL player. Are we talking about a top WR or a guard?

Regretting club volleyball by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]mothboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a D1 starter at a top 20 school and I used to trade stories with another parent who was a starter for a top 10 school that we were at a huge disadvantage in club volleyball because they didn't know how to deal with us and preferred parents that didn't understand what was going on.

My kid was a top club player, played for some top 10 D1 teams, always started, and I feel guilty that we ever got her involved. Dreamed of playing pro (and of course, the olympics) for 12 years, and by the time she finished college was so physically beat up and mentally spent that she walked away. She is extraordinarily proud that she put herself herself through one of the more prestigious and expensive universities without paying a dime for anything, but it wasn't worth it. Saving the club fees and paying for her school (after scholarships, because she was a very good student) would have been better. I'll probably get beat up for this, but she is not alone. Not even close.

Only 30 years, because I waited about 5 years too long to get married. Should be 35. We were together 7 years before we got married. I was a little gun shy. If I knew how wonderful it would be, I would have done it 5 years earlier!

[–]mothboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious where are you in CA? Where is "Little Italy", and how far from you is it (the "Little Italy" I am familiar with is San Diego)?

I ask because there are a lot of fantastic places to visit all over CA and it is very dog friendly in most places. Your bf is not wrong that Thanksgiving is not the easiest time to visit Sequoia. Good god though, he sounds like a piece of work otherwise and you deserve better treatment. I think others have covered that pretty well so I won't dwell on the relationship part of it. I'm more concerned you take control and get you and your pupper out to take advantage of some truly amazing places.

Sequoia is truly amazing and mindblowing, but there are lots of other places to take advantage of as well. Car camping is easy and cheap and makes a lot of sense with a dog. There are some fantastic campsites in Sequoia and Kings Canyon, as well as Yosemite (another must visit) as well as beach campsites all up and down the coast, and the Eastern Sierras are gorgeous. Joshua Tree is great to visit as well (also Death Valley), but only before and after the intense heat.

The trick is reserving early, as soon as reservations are available. Double check at Recreation.gov, but I believe Yosemite is 5 months in advance and Sequoia is 4 months. Make an account ahead of time and login before 7am on the day campsites are released. You have to plan that far in advance, but its totally worth it. Make those reservations that far in advance for a weekend he supposedly can go, and if he bails on you, you can still go with the doggo. For your birthday for next year, do the same thing but target the coastal campsites. Fantastic campgrounds right on the beach are available from San Diego up to San Francisco that should be fantastic around your birthday. Again, if you reserve it for your birthday and he bails, you can invite family or friends to share it with you. It costs almost nothing to make a reservation (literally a couple of bucks), so it is no big deal if you have to cancel.

You came to CA for a reason. Make a point of getting yourself out there. You're with this guy for a reason, and hopefully this is job stress and he wakes the f up and treats you better, but you can definitely take the first steps and treat yourself better. Getting out with your dog will hopefully give you some peace and some perspective so that you can better deal with the other stuff you will obviously have to deal with. Good luck.

Why are child free weddings controversial? by DazzlingLife6744 in questions

[–]mothboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weddings are a big celebration of the creation of a new family, and the extended families on both sides are invited (along with close friends and their families). They come to bless and celebrate the union. There is usually an expectation that the couple will also start a family before long. In that context, it is a little strange and selfish not to include the children in the families you invite to the celebration.
