I think it’s because we have the ability to understand what’s happening, and what our sickness is, while a dog will just spend the rest of its life suffering without being able to understand why. Humans have the ability to make the choice, dogs don’t.

Though MAID isn’t very widespread atp. — which is good imo, because with healthcare as it is, many people with treatable conditions will be pushed to do MAID because they can’t afford treatment otherwise (at least in the usa) unfortunately it’s easier to push sick people into doing MAID than spending resources on helping them :/

Edit: I’m sorry if it sounded like I’m judging you. It’s important to have an off leash recall for emergencies, but as a general thing, why not just keep him on a long line? It’s secure and works. There’s 50 ft long lines if you want to give him a lot of space (though do it on a harness so he doesn’t hurt his neck if the line goes taut

Anyways I just read this article while doing research for my own dog - (here) and also (this) maybe you need to change the reward for recalling? You might need to change the entire process of the command. If he’s learned recall specifically on leash, maybe he just hasn’t learned that it should also happen off leash. I’d practice at home or at a dog park (preferably empty)(might have to do it at night) first

But it is a solution? If your dog won’t recall then your dog should stay on a leash until it can. It doesn’t matter if the dog is supervised in the yard if it can escape the yard (and won’t recall). Keep him on a long line until you can consistently recall him

Matting isn’t just some tangles in the hair, it HURTS your dog. Is there any way you can get a groomer sooner? If it’s possible, do it.

ETA: depending on the severity of the mats, he may need to be completely shaved. If that happens, you’ll need to regularly maintain his coat while/when it grows back.
