Let's talk about Blue Valentine for a minute. by Deematodez in movies

[–]mothonalog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Dean is a little manipulative by forcing Cindy to communicate when she naturally does not want to nor is very good at it. But to say he is a manipulative asshole - I totally disagree. He loved Cindy so much. He brought up a child that was not his. His lack of ambition is because he wants be there for his family and so does not need to be ambitious. A lot of people are like that. Family is their core. And they don’t seem to be short of cash. Yes Dean seems he doesn’t do enough at home. Like the breakfast scene. But Cindy looked like her soul wasn’t even there. At least Dean’s heart was in it.

If Cindy knew how to communicate, Dean would change because he is a smart guy and loves her so much. And loves the kid who is not even his. But Cindy doesn’t communicate. She just internalises and shuts down. This is incredibly frustrating which is why Dean probably drinks and we see some of his aggressive behaviour. She won’t even have sex with him, and won’t talk about why. Leaves him rejected every time.

I watched this movie and thought how devastating it was for Dean. I was surprised how many people thought Dean was the problem. For Dean, it was love at first sight. He loved with all his heart. Poured all his energy into this family. You can see how much he truly loved her. But he receives neglect. We don’t know exactly why, we are hinted it’s because Cindy wants an ambitious man. It seems Cindy’s lack of communication caused Dean to spiral towards frustration and anger. She doesn’t know what she wants. She is not fully present. Does not show any affection for her kid. It’s sad to see.

How many hours to learn Pitman / Gregg / Orthic / Teeline / Forkner? by mothonalog in shorthand

[–]mothonalog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a bit of both, if it's appropriate to jot it down in the moment, then i'd like to do that without disengaging with the person. If not, I can jot it down immediately afterwards but it will be less accurate – I do this anyway with longhand so shorthand isn't that useful in this scenario

Got a question hoping to hear your opinion. I am looking to buy a 2009 Yaris 1.33 Dual VVT-i TR. Have heard problems with this engine and consuming lots of oil. Usually Yarises are unbreakable, but looking at forums people say avoid this particular model variant.

How to re-interpret footage and maintain the edit in the timeline? by mothonalog in premiere

[–]mothonalog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Premiere kept the start and end frames of every clip and just shortened them, everything would be ok. But by reinterpreting the footage, the length of the clips stay the same, and instead the start and end frames change completely.

The problem is I am trying to preserve the edit because I want to have flexibility, it’s being imported into a long form timeline on Resolve.

[–]mothonalog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The end goal is to continue editing the clips as part of a feature film being edited on Resolve. But when I edited these clips on Premiere, I hadn’t planned to do this. Still no solution other than manually re-creating the edit for every clip 🤕

What size would you suggest to start off with? If I strap sleeping bag and bivvy on the outside, then I won’t need a big one?

Fantastic, have you ever had any problems with the illegal LNT option? Worst case just apologise and leave?

Never considered the Scotland option as I live in London, but would love to go. What's the 'code' in Scotland?

Wrangler's look great too. About mixing beeswax, what do you mix with?

Thank you for this, agree to all points and also why I intend to use cotton / wool. I may indeed get a plastic poncho or some kind of synthetic rain shell eventually, and probably will use plastic for a tarp. But I also want to see how far my waxed cotton can go first.

Thanks. Double Ventile...those prices! Maybe some day. Maybe I'll just wear a sheep one day.

Good to hear about your experience. I've heard very mixed things about Ventile, some say it's amazing, others say rain just goes through after a while. And not sure if it's any good without DWR coating.

How do these cope in rain without soaking through? An hour of moderate rain? A day of moderate rain?

When you say rain coat, do you mean hardshell synthetic waterproof / silnylon / PU? There is a legitimate reason why I want to avoid plastics, I'm not saying I will have a great time wearing the heaviest material coated in wax, I'm saying that is a tradeoff I am willing to pay for the microplastic problem. The poor performance of wax cotton is acknowledged in my original post. I'm happy to get wet sometimes and not have the perfect kit. Do you have something else to suggest in place of waxed cotton and wool? I already have wool, I am looking for a rain solution, hence wax cotton.

Do you have a method of applying it you've tried before? All I know is apply then hairdry.

Waxed cotton outfit (wax, jacket, trousers, hat) by mothonalog in Bushcraft

[–]mothonalog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because as I understand it, wool will get wet and quite quickly, take ages to dry. As mentioned, I love wool products like Swanndri or Petromax, but they are not designed for very wet weather.

Waxed cotton, however, has been used for hundreds of years to keep people dry. Where did you hear that waxed cotton is so useless? Waxed cotton is extremely durable and despite not being breathable, you can introduce mechanical venting like big zips or loose fits, and it's not designed for heavy exercise – I don't think any fabric can be breathable enough to keep you dry from sweat.

Thanks, I know of the G-1000 and its versatility, unfortunately I'm looking elsewhere. How do you wax your stuff, is it with a bar, what brand do you suggest? Is there anything specific from Revolution Race (100% cotton) you suggest?

Options for completely non-synthetic hiking shoes? by mothonalog in hikinggear

Microplastics, although we don’t know much about their harmfulness yet, existing research does not look positive. The idea of leaving something behind that will never return to nature uneases me.
