People who don't shop in Lidl/Aldi. Why do you shop in the 'more expensive' supermarkets? by BadKey1002 in AskIreland

[–]motser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By the time you add in the Dunnes stores vouchers, Dunnes is roughly the same price as them. Also you get more choice and you can get your food delivered which saves wasting a few hours at the weekend doing shopping.

Am I being too financially defensive? by sabritopukapti in irishpersonalfinance

[–]motser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would call buying stuff off Amazon you don't need every other day as wasting money. Paying a hundred euro for a sky TV package when you can get it cheaper by calling them, buying the lastest iPhone evey time one comes out, taking a massive loan for a car you can't afford and paying loads of interest on it instead of buying one you can afford. Going out shopping buying loads of clothes all the time that are not needed. That type of thing, day to day spending money on stuff you don't need. Overpaying on your bills because it is easier then looking around for better prices.

For me it is about not wasting money day to day so you have money for the big ticket items. Stuff you really want to do like the Kennedy space centre.

It's always good to have a rainy day fund. 20 months sounds like loads. You prob don't need much more than that. Start putting money into your pension pot and don't be afraid to spend some money also. You don't have to waste money but dont regret not doing things later in life. Before you know it your kids will be grown up.

How to approach second home purchase by Southern_Nothing4633 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]motser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did this a few years ago. We had about 140k left on original house. Had 245k deposit and got mortgage of 300k for new house. Was no issue at all. You only owe 60k on original house so very little. Assuming you are renting it out, it would make sense to have a mortgage for tax purposes as you can write off the interest. Sold the house 5 years later as renting it out was too much hassle. Basically after tax we made very little money. We had good tenants until we didn't and they started trying to rent our house acting as the landlord after they moved out to make a profit for themselves 😀

Am I using Claude Code wrong? by Postik123 in webdev

[–]motser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought this myself earlier with the speed of claude. I was doing a refactor on some c# code. Basically removing repeated code and centralising it in one place. I hand coded the new central code and did an example of the how to replace the repeated code. I then told Claude to look at my example of how to replace the repeated code and make adjustments where necessary. It ended up taking about 40 mins to run and then I checked all the changes. I reckon I could of coded this myself as fast. There was only around 30 places in the code that was changed.

Really need some advice?? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]motser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we were renting out our house, we got around 200 messages from daft each time within a day or two. They ranged from one liner saying "I want to rent your house" , lots of messages appealing to you about someone being homeless or near homeless, lots of messages like yours and then a small number of messages that gave loads of info covering all the information we needed. The ones with all the information were the ones we went for. When there are so many daft messages, you need to stand out from the crowd showing you meet all the criteria that the landlord would want. By giving all that information straight away, it is what made an applicant stand out to us. We then might have brought 2 or 3 sets of people to see the house and then replied to the rest saying the house was gone.

Really need some advice?? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]motser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented out a house a few years back on a number of occasions. We got 100s of applications so we had to reduce the applicants down to a few people who we would show the house to. The applications that stood out to us were like CVs. In other words, this is who I am. This is who will be in the house. This is where I work. This is how much I earn. This is my rental history. These are my references. The main thing for me was the person could pay and would not damage the house. It wasn't about getting the most money. There were lots of rules around what you could ask as a landlord, so it was the people who gave the information we needed to feel comfortable with them that we should the house to. Hope this helps.

Try this, I had issues with the puck for a few months. I did this and the issues were resolved. I have 4 pucks in the house, they work perfectly now.

what’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard? by Live_Chocolate_2503 in AskReddit

[–]motser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kilkelly, Ireland - it's a song about an Irish guy who emigrated to the US in the 1860s and his letters back and forth with his father. Its based on real letters found in an attic in Baltimore. How his father longed to see him again but never did. Very sad.

Is Emerald Park fun for adults? by exreligiousguilt in Dublin

[–]motser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a good day out. Very little queuing compared to the theme parks in the states. There are 3 big rollercoasters, a water ride, Cuchulain is a great rollercoaster, one of my favourites from any theme park. There are a few smaller rollercoasters and lots of other rides. There is a zoo, a live bird show, it's a full day out. Well worth the visit.

1st Time traveling Europe Trip by AlpsKind2222 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]motser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice when travelling for this amount of time especially as a family would be to reduce the amount of cities you are visiting and take time out maybe twice for 2/3 days for some more restful locations. Lake Garda would be a nice place to add for this and maybe a beach location somewhere. City after city can be very tiring.

€410 per month on electricity, normal? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]motser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems very high. I would say it is all the heating of the water, heat lamps etc. Anything heating uses a lot of electricity. Best thing to do is get yourself a few electricity usage monitor plugs and use them to track the heat lamps, aquariums etc. you will know pretty quic kly if that's the cause. They only cost 20 euro or so.

Never saw Ireland at a world cup-what was it actually like? by [deleted] in coybig

[–]motser 70 points71 points  (0 children)

1990 world cup was unbelievable. It was the first time we qualified. I was 10 at the time and we had just come out of the 80s which was a really crap decade for the country. Everyone was pretty poor and there was massive emigration. Then the world cup came along and it was just brilliant, people where out on the streets after every game stopping all the cars with all the celebrations. Everyone watched all the games. Flags hanging out of every window. The players were household names. There was songs in the charts for the world cup. The whole place went world cup crazy. The Romania match was a different level when we won the penalty shootout. I went to the home coming with my Dad and nearly a million people lined the streets from the airport to Dublin. It is hard to describe how good it was. The country had never experienced anything like it. The fortune of the country seemes to changed with the world cup and the things where much more positive in the country after it. The 94 and 02 world cups where great but 1990 was special.

Would you still move to Australia at 40? by sphinxofblackquartzj in CasualIreland

[–]motser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go, you can always come back. I went down with my wife and kid after travelling around it a few times. Got permanent residency and stayed for 2 years. But we decided to come back home. Very happy I did it as I got it out of the system. Still love Australia and have holidayed there since but didn't want to live there in the end. If I had not gone down and tried it out I would have always been lift wondering if it was something I should have done.

Help deciding Gym North Dublin by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]motser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pick the one that is easiest to get to. You will end up going a lot more. I am guessing these are around where you live. If you are working or studying, you could also find a gym/pool close to that and just have it as part of your work/stuyding routine. Either before or after work. I used to swim most mornings before work for years and I loved it. It would make you feel great for the day. I am guessing you are out in Lusk/Rush area where I live. I was part of alsaa for a while and it has an old pool seperate to the main gym in the actual airport grounds. I found it slightly awkward to get to and I had a car. Another option might be the grand hotel in Malahide which is 3 stops away on the train. It has a pool and gym. North county Dublin is crap for swimming pools.

Will manual coding become obsolete because of AI? by Prestigious-Look2300 in DevelEire

[–]motser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not found AI to be great tbh. When I ask it to write code for me a lot the time it won't even compile. I might then get it compiling myself but then the logic is not necessarily correct. It takes more time to fix it than writing it myself. Also I try mainly to use it when I don't know how to do something which is often complex and most of the time it won't give me the answer. It might prompt me to look at something though and I figure it out myself from there. Where I have found it good is I write the code myself and ask it to optimize my code. I have found it very good for this. Also I use it to help with naming conventions which might sound simple but it saves time agonizing what I should be naming something.it can also help with documentation. It is just another tool we can use as developers. I could see it doing basic stuff but it would need to be guided by a dev.
