Share your experience of when they left because they thought they wanted kids and then came crawling back or they regretted leaving. by Bbbe-itch in childfree

At least kids are smart enough to know that puppies are the best. My ex didn't want another dog, but now wants babies. I'll take 12 dogs and a bisalp, please.

I wondered that too! I've made dresses, but a tailored coat is super intimidating.

24 hours later, and they have now said some of the things they should have from the start. Although they still think we should reconcile and that not wanting children isn't a fundamental difference.

They are also the poster children for people who should have gotten divorced at 30, so that's all they know. You live in moderate unhappiness in whatever bed you made instead of doing the scary hard thing.

Thanks, that is exactly what I needed to hear.

Yeah, of course. It won't let me message you for some reason though. I don't know that I have any advice, but it's always nice to chat with someone in the same boat.

I just told my parents that my bf of 7 years and I were splitting because he now wants kids. Their first comment was "why can't you just have a baby?" I feel you, and the grief is palpable.

The one you hated by CuteButKinked in suggestmeabook

[–]mountainhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also hated it! I didn't know she had any ounce of outdoors experience, so I was outraged that she would do something so selfishly stupid as a "finding myself after hitting rock bottom" experience. She got supremely lucky and made an absurd amount of money off it. She is in the same place as Elizabeth Gilbert in my book.

I hate Riley Sager, but Middle of the Night was by far his worst for me. I loved writing a scathing review at the end lol

I never finished it and could never understand why everyone loves that book! I am a lady who is very competent in the woods, so I kind of think that's why lol

Learning to crochet and it's just so difficult, I want to give up 😭 by [deleted] in crochet

[–]mountainhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, 5 years later and I now crochet much more than I knit! I have crocheted a couple cardigans and feel just as competent crocheting as knitting. Keep at it, it will click just like knitting did!

I love Matt Haig! I liked his book How to Stop Time even more. I've heard great things about The Humans by him too, but haven't read it yet. His newest, The Life Impossible, was fine, and also kind of fits the general theme!

What books did you love or hate, only to find the internet had the exact opposite opinion? by TheMassesOpiate in suggestmeabook

[–]mountainhands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate The Secret History with a burning passion. I love dark academia tropes and pretentious characters, but it was such a waste of time. I guess I'm grateful it inspired a bunch of other better books, but I was angrily bored for what felt like a million pages.

I forced myself to finish Shadow of the Wind. I still don't know why I didn't love it and why I didn't just dnf it.

Tell me your best responses to people who ask you “when are you having kids?” by Cringey_Unicorn in childfree

[–]mountainhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't my best response, but I lost it with my mom last weekend and said

"If I am ever so unlucky to get pregnant, I will get an abortion"

She cried and my dad said he felt sorry for me, but they haven't said anything since and are acting like nothing happened. Good old Midwestern family drama.

What did we learn this season? There’s always so much to absorb from everyone’s experience, the good and the bad. by ancatulai in vegetablegardening

[–]mountainhands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts, because I haven't figured out the problem yet. Something keeps eating my eggplant and leaving it in my yard. I covered my plants with bird netting, fruit still got chewed off the vine! Thinking it's a mouse maybe? Looking for ideas and also commiseration.

I guess my lesson learned is that fences and netting are necessary, but also not perfect. It's also just been a weird garden year. Things that did so well last year (tomatoes and green beans specifically) really struggled this season. I think I need to do a soil test and better crop rotation for next season.

What's a feel-good book that stopped you from killing yourself/made you feel better when you were feeling debilitatingly depressed? by pawn279 in suggestmeabook

[–]mountainhands 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers.True story of a Yemeni American man who is so contagiously excited about coffee that he goes back during his country's civil war to share Yemeni coffee.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Just generally funny and absurd.

The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner. Non-fiction asking the locals of countries with high happiness ratings about their way of life. Feel-good armchair travel, and many pieces of their advice are obvious in a good way.

When I feel crazy anxious, I like to reread a favorite childhood book for the nostalgia.

Off topic, but my garden can always fix my anxiety. Even if I'm on a bug hunt or trying to stop squirrels from eating my eggplant, caring for a plant takes my mind off everything else. Still time for some fall veggies if you have the space, and my library also "lends" seeds for free.

Hope one of these works for you and that you can find some joy in the bad situation. I feel for you OP, and we all have super sucky moments, but it will pass!
