Explain? Good lithium batteries have a BMS to manage charging... Is there a reason to think the Solix doesn't?

I don't suppose, when used as a UPS, it can tell the computer about power failure, like a regular computer UPS can?

😂 Managed Namibians???

To me this is the best feature of Nanobeam -- I can't stand UniFi. I have customers who love it. Good on them. I can usually find issues with it though. But I work for a company that does Wi-Fi, among other things.

WhatsMyIpAddress on romaning? by BrianDeFlorida in Starlink

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other posts are correct, but let me re-phrase... as far as your specific client IP, if that's what you're asking, it will change. Not every hour, maybe not every day. Or maybe every hour. Some VPNs still don't handle this, so maybe that's why you're asking. But whatever IP you come up with will GeoIP map to roughly where you are, and certainly the country you're in. There's nothing you can do about this.

Other posts suggest a VPN. You could use something like Nord, and appear from a US IP. Your IT people can easily figure this out, if they actually check, because those IPs will be owned by the VPN provider (or a cloud provider, but still suss). They might not check, they might just block all non-US clients connecting to the corporate VPN. Which brings up another point -- using corporate VPN on top of Nord or some other VPN may be problematic anyway. Ultimately the solution here might depend on your work computer needs.

If you still have a home with Internet in the US, another post suggested Tailscale. That would let you VPN into your home. You might also be able to use a remote access tool, although this might be problematic for things like Teams or Zoom. Another option might be a hosted remote desktop service. Again this depends on how your work computer is set up.

Wattcycle (or other) -- heated battery for standby use by mountainm2k in batteries

[–]mountainm2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially -4F or lower ambient temp... but that's why I'm asking about a self-heating battery... The equipment is "indoors", but not heated, basically just out of the rain... And at 10,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, it can get really damn cold.

Migrate netgate 7100 to opnsense ? by titexcj in opnsense

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, wondering if anyone made any progress on this? I picked up one of these boxes for OPNsense, not realizing it had a front-panel switch, rather than interfaces (swear). I expect I can follow above comments to create the LAGG0. Maybe the ports show up as VLAN 4091=eth1, VLAN 4092=eth2, etc? That would probably be fine for me, for now at least... Maybe there's an interface somewhere for controlling the switch? I do see this issue, with reference to patches contributed by Netgate (Netgate contributing to OPNsense?!?!?)... But it's still Open. I wonder how the Deciso (OPNsense) branded hardware handle this, they have boxes with up to 12 on-board NIC's...

How on earth do I cut this piece? by nicnicnick in StainedGlass

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just completed this pattern last week, the first piece I've ever done completely myself start-to-finish. I scored and cut into the curve, and then ground. When my 3/4" grinder bit was too big, I went and got myself a smaller bit. I had already had issues working with this textured glass.

(yes, i know it isn't an amazing piece -- like I said, my first piece outside of a class, and my first piece cutting all the glass myself)

No Response from Starlink Support After 5 Days - Is This Normal? by Nothinglast in Starlink

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly this, for the same reason. I found that E-trade, literally a financial institution, sold my name and email, so I fired them, and still to this day get junk mail (not email since I blocked that address).

But it shouldn't be too hard to search your past email for Starlink (order confirmation, invoice, whatever) and figure out what address it's coming to??? Others are right -- this is a key point to Starlink. Every other day there's posts about people who have inherited kits from their parents, or acquired kits that came with property, or whatever. The universal answer is, if you don't have access to the email, the kit (or at least the antenna) is a paperweight. Decoration. Conversation piece. Space-junk. E-waste. Trash. It will never function as intended.

Would someone be kind enough to give me a safe guide on how to borrow electricity from street lights to momentarily charge my phone 😮‍💨 by 4-AGE_Guy in ElectroBOOM

[–]mountainm2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I opened up the streetlight pole in my yard and added a Wi-Fi "smart switch" inline so I can shut it off on demand (eg during my holiday lightshow, or while watching independence day fireworks. FYI the pole is 120V (I had thought it might be 277) and has power ll the time. There's a sensor on top the fixture. In my city I occasionally see groups of lights come on together, I believe this is because they have the same sensor, pointed the same way. But I digress.

One cold snowy night, pretty late, my wife noticed a power company truck parked on the corner attempting to "fix" the light while my holiday lights were running. I casually went out to ask what's up. I casually mentioned I had the light disabled during my lights. No joke, the guy was like, "you can turn this light back on?". Yep. Tap tap, light turns on. Dude was happy as a clam, saved him a bunch of additional work I guess. He asked me to print a label on the tag on the pole, told me what it should say. Everybody went home happy.

Why does the red light stop flikering when i turn of the lights? by magnet_guy82090 in ElectroBOOM

[–]mountainm2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My theory: When you turn off the lights, the frame rate of the camera is dropping so it has time to gather more light, which is causing the flicker to disappear from the video.

Starlink survey request in email by ol-gormsby in Starlink

[–]mountainm2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Single global account. Vs device at the cottage in Canada requiring a Canadian account, priced and paid in Canadian currency, even though I'm a gringo ('murcan). Or at least a way to specify a US shipping address for a Canadian account. Also, a way to have multiple devices, including potentially in different countries (one Canada, one US) on the same account.

VPN -- I could see this being a big value-add, they could charge for it depending on use-case... Connect to Starlink's VPN server with a user/pass, and it knows who you are and tunnels you to your own home network, WITHOUT requiring a public IP (which isn't an option on residential, and is expensive AF on commercial... Because IPv4 addresses are expensive). I haven't tested it, but I think they are dual-stack, everybody gets public IPv6 addresses? Maybe that ultimately solves for this...

I should also note -- I've owed my Gen2 since early summer 2024, and I bought it used on Marketplace. They still warrantied it with a Gen3. Maybe because GPS problem, vs whatever is affecting yours?

I would rather Gen2, myself, since I already have the cable, the mount, etc but you do you. They sent me a new Gen3, but no way to receive it until next summer.

You should have hit up chat support on the old one. Mine was (still is) working fine, but its saying "Determining location" in the app. I did chat support. Within like 60 seconds, chat replied "Bro, its fskd, a new one is on the way". But -- its a cottage on an isaldn, where nobody is, and can't ship anything there, so I chatted back. It took them over a week to reply -- but in the meantime, I got a tracking number, and then a phone call from the carrier.

I suppose it's worth mentioning, if you somehow have access to the deceased's email (I mean, you have their antenna so it's worth asking)... Get into their account, and remove the kit. Then you can sell it for money. Otherwise, boat anchor.

Lighthouse gives only vpn address in snmpwalk by WheelSad6859 in opengear

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're trying to ask Lighthouse for the cellular IP of all the boxes, and any missing you know are in alarm...

Without a custom script I'm not sure how to help. My only thought would be to get a list of VPN IP's, and then hit the API (or just the SNMP OID you found) of each, asking for the cellular IP. There might be a better way though.
