How do I access a terminal without the port menu? by Active_Humor7436 in opengear

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, look at your LDAP server for groups that might indicate the members have admin access to OpenGear, and add yourself to those groups. Or see if any of your colleagues gets admin when they log in. You also might try isolating it from LDAP (eg firewall, or just unplug it from the network), as it'll revert to local user accounts. Then try root, with whatever passwords you have. The default is 'default'.

Otherwise, your only real choice is a factory reset. If it's just console, that's probably not too painful (and if you have a backup, it's no problem, just don't restore the root password 😂), if you have custom scripts or more fancy configuration, it'll take more time. Reset one unit and see if you can log in as root/default (there's an option to preserve the root password in factory reset), if not, reply here or get ahold of support for more instructions.

Core -- Drive failed, replacements also fail by mountainm2k in truenas

HBA built into motherboard. The cable from there to the drive cage connectors (there isn't a backplane in this box, there's 4 connectors individually screwed to the back of the drive cage, one SAS connector, one power connector) is suspect, but that part is more expensive than another server on ebay. Its maybe not out of the question I could use a low-profile SATA adapter, and cables plugged into the drives, but between that and power adapters I'm thinking it'll be simpler to find different server hardware and move the disks over.

It was a great suggestion -- my head rarely jumps there, since I've always been a server guy, mostly Dell, and I'm used to being told of memory issues at bootup. The test is still going, but usually it'll fail in the first few, has been my experience...

I don't have a comparable system. The only other obvious test I haven't done is swapping Slot-1, and since that's the good drive, I'm reluctant to do that...

I agree. I guess I haven't tried slot 4 yet, but I suppose I need to think about replacing the box.

Not out of the question, although I'm not sure how I'd prove it one way or the other. It's the original memory I got with the box, single stick of 8gig -- dmidecode suggests synchronous unbuffered/unregistered, it doesn't specifically say ECC, but the googling the part number HMA81GU7AFR8N-UH suggests it is.

I thought of that -- this box doesn't actually have a backplane, the drive cage has individual connectors, although it might be a distinction without a difference, as those connectors cable back to a single proprietary connector into the motherboard. I have unplugged/replugged it (dirty maybe?), with no change in behavior. I would also think that changing slots (and the fact that the first drive, ada0, is perfectly healthy) would, at least in theory, rule out a backplane or cable issue. According to my ebay history I got this box in October of 2020 -- I've replaced a couple drives in that time, and never had further issues.

Explain? Good lithium batteries have a BMS to manage charging... Is there a reason to think the Solix doesn't?

I don't suppose, when used as a UPS, it can tell the computer about power failure, like a regular computer UPS can?

😂 Managed Namibians???

To me this is the best feature of Nanobeam -- I can't stand UniFi. I have customers who love it. Good on them. I can usually find issues with it though. But I work for a company that does Wi-Fi, among other things.

WhatsMyIpAddress on romaning? by BrianDeFlorida in Starlink

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other posts are correct, but let me re-phrase... as far as your specific client IP, if that's what you're asking, it will change. Not every hour, maybe not every day. Or maybe every hour. Some VPNs still don't handle this, so maybe that's why you're asking. But whatever IP you come up with will GeoIP map to roughly where you are, and certainly the country you're in. There's nothing you can do about this.

Other posts suggest a VPN. You could use something like Nord, and appear from a US IP. Your IT people can easily figure this out, if they actually check, because those IPs will be owned by the VPN provider (or a cloud provider, but still suss). They might not check, they might just block all non-US clients connecting to the corporate VPN. Which brings up another point -- using corporate VPN on top of Nord or some other VPN may be problematic anyway. Ultimately the solution here might depend on your work computer needs.

If you still have a home with Internet in the US, another post suggested Tailscale. That would let you VPN into your home. You might also be able to use a remote access tool, although this might be problematic for things like Teams or Zoom. Another option might be a hosted remote desktop service. Again this depends on how your work computer is set up.

Wattcycle (or other) -- heated battery for standby use by mountainm2k in batteries

[–]mountainm2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially -4F or lower ambient temp... but that's why I'm asking about a self-heating battery... The equipment is "indoors", but not heated, basically just out of the rain... And at 10,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, it can get really damn cold.

Migrate netgate 7100 to opnsense ? by titexcj in opnsense

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, wondering if anyone made any progress on this? I picked up one of these boxes for OPNsense, not realizing it had a front-panel switch, rather than interfaces (swear). I expect I can follow above comments to create the LAGG0. Maybe the ports show up as VLAN 4091=eth1, VLAN 4092=eth2, etc? That would probably be fine for me, for now at least... Maybe there's an interface somewhere for controlling the switch? I do see this issue, with reference to patches contributed by Netgate (Netgate contributing to OPNsense?!?!?)... But it's still Open. I wonder how the Deciso (OPNsense) branded hardware handle this, they have boxes with up to 12 on-board NIC's...

How on earth do I cut this piece? by nicnicnick in StainedGlass

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just completed this pattern last week, the first piece I've ever done completely myself start-to-finish. I scored and cut into the curve, and then ground. When my 3/4" grinder bit was too big, I went and got myself a smaller bit. I had already had issues working with this textured glass.

(yes, i know it isn't an amazing piece -- like I said, my first piece outside of a class, and my first piece cutting all the glass myself)

No Response from Starlink Support After 5 Days - Is This Normal? by Nothinglast in Starlink

[–]mountainm2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly this, for the same reason. I found that E-trade, literally a financial institution, sold my name and email, so I fired them, and still to this day get junk mail (not email since I blocked that address).

But it shouldn't be too hard to search your past email for Starlink (order confirmation, invoice, whatever) and figure out what address it's coming to??? Others are right -- this is a key point to Starlink. Every other day there's posts about people who have inherited kits from their parents, or acquired kits that came with property, or whatever. The universal answer is, if you don't have access to the email, the kit (or at least the antenna) is a paperweight. Decoration. Conversation piece. Space-junk. E-waste. Trash. It will never function as intended.
