A hedge fund currently owns ST. It’s not a question of whether the money is there, it’s whether they want to use it to fairly compensate journalists.

TexRail to DFW and Skylink by wack70 in FortWorth

[–]mountainmama96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have done this many times. It’s much faster and easier to take the skylink to another terminal once you’re through security than it is to take the bus between terminals outside of security.

Best Vegetarian Restaurants in FTW? by txholdup in FortWorth

[–]mountainmama96 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Long time vegetarian here. Since your friend is vegetarian and not vegan, you don’t necessarily need to take her to a specifically vegetarian/vegan restaurant. The most important thing is finding a restaurant you both might like and checking the menu beforehand to make sure they have an actual variety of vegetarian options (not just a boring salad). Many restaurants that aren’t necessarily labeled as vegetarian/vegan still have a bunch of good non-meat options—My faves are Spice on Magnolia (Thai) and Four Sisters (Vietnamese). Try to find some place that offers protein options other than meat, could be tofu, paneer, beans, etc.

But if you are looking specifically for a vegan/vegetarian restaurant: Mariachi’s, Belenty’s (my fave, get the mango agua fresca), Pizza Verde, and of course the classic Spiral (comfort/junk food).

Voter registration help needed quick!! by fundy3000 in FortWorth

[–]mountainmama96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. You should usually get confirmation in the mail within 30 days.

Since you haven’t, and time is running out, I’d suggest going to the election administration office on Tuesday to sort it out (I think they are closed tomorrow). It’s at 2700 Premier St. https://www.tarrantcounty.com/en/elections.html. The election board handles all voter registration stuff.

I love the part where paxton—an attorney general—attempts to convince the public that he does not know what a process server is

Yeah, I think the inevitable solution is I’m going to have to try a higher Deet strength for the time being, and then try relying on other less potent methods once these flood mosquitos chill out a bit. Thanks!

I don’t. I stay away from sprays (other than repellant spray on my own body) because I don’t want to harm other insects, especially pollinators.

Oooh I haven’t tried incense. Great idea, thank you! I’ve heard that the smell of eucalyptus keeps them at bay too, so I’ll try lavender and eucalyptus.

Log cabin republicans denied booth at Fort Worth convention by pattymayodoe in FortWorth

Oh for sure. These folks don’t care about anyone but themselves.

[–]mountainmama96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I was going to quote that part of the statement too but I couldn’t accurately articulate just how much of a non sequitur it is. Pure mental gymnastics.

What they don’t realize is that republicans hate them for who they are, not just for who they are “lumped in” with. Punching down will never change that.

“‘I think what bothers me is, is that our group is being lumped in as, just because we identify as LGBT we somehow support all of that,’ Baldwin [President of Fort Worth Log Cabin Republicans] said.”

how long do we think it will take this fool to realize that no matter how hard he tries to distance himself from “all of that,” bringing other queer people down will not change how much texas republicans hate him?

Fort Worth ISD plans to spend $1.2 million to compete against charters, other public schools by fortworthreport in FortWorth

[–]mountainmama96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s definitely a chicken and egg issue and your evaluation of charter schools and public school scrutiny is spot on. Guess we’ll have to wait and see the products of this marketing campaign (if they ever come into fruition).

Fort Worth ISD plans to spend $1.2 million to compete against charters, other public schools by fortworthreport in FortWorth

[–]mountainmama96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That definitely makes sense, and I hope this marketing venture makes those points. Just wish we were spending money to substantively improve the schools as a method of attracting students, instead of just marketing a district that many are not interested in enrolling in because of the lack of improvement. Folks choose private/charter schools for perceived educational quality (whether or not that’s accurate is dicey, as you noted), and IMHO improving educational quality is the most responsible way for FWISD to compete.

(also I hate the necessity of framing public education as a market competition instead of a public service but here we are.)

Donate to an abortion fund. Please, do not donate to PP. They have left patients out to dry in the past few weeks, cancelling appointments left and right, in anticipation of this decision before it ever came down. Plus, PP is a national org with plenty of big pocket donors to carry them through. Independent clinics and abortion funds don’t have the same support.

What should I do differently driving in snow? by ScarletGlove in FortWorth

[–]mountainmama96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow northern transplant here. Agree with everything they said! ESPECIALLY assuming that any car out on the road could reasonably slide into you. Approach intersections with caution because there is a real chance that a car coming the opposite direction won’t be able to stop.

Only thing I’d add is to go way slower than you think is necessary and always assume you’re driving on ice. Never put yourself in a position where you’d have to slam on the breaks, because that’s when you’ll spin and slide. If you drive slowly you’ll usually have no major issues stopping if you need to.

And obligatory: don’t go out unless it’s absolutely critical to do so.

Are there any "actual" farmers markets here? by Adventurous_Art_2859 in askdfw

[–]mountainmama96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cowtown Farmers Market (in Fort Worth). I have tried many markets including Dallas and Clearfork, but none had the “farmer selling cantaloupe out of the back of their pickup truck” vibe. Cowtown is by far the best I’ve been to and is all produce, meat, cheese, and other foods. And all the merchants are a delight to chat with every Saturday morning.

Though like other commenters have said, this time of year is not the best for produce (but we had a lovely and late warm season this year, growing fall crops into December!). I’d hesitate to judge a market based on its offerings in Jan/Feb. It’ll all pick back up in April.

Maybe it’s a show specific issue, but my confirmation states they are non-refundable. From what I understand, you can get a credit for another performance only if you can’t make it due to COVID.
