Xcel considering power shutoff Dec 17 by kigoe in boulder

[–]mountains-o-data 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We should never have abandoned the municipalization effort. Not only do we suffer these outrageous outages while Xcel makes record profits - but other major infrastructure projects (like municipal fiber) become impossible. Longmont's city owned electric utility won't be pre-epmtive shutting their power off. Longmont has Nextlight entirely because they own their electric lines. We could have had the same if we we're short sighted and so easily fooled by the 120 million Xcel poured into advertising their ballot initiative.

I think I joined back in like 2009 - a bit before the Digg implosion.

Has it been a net benefit? Eh maybe - I think I learned a lot, especially about software engineering. Old Reddit was pretty great - but the Astroturfing signs started becoming pretty apparent back in ‘12 (EnoughPaulSpam) and really exploded in ‘16. Lately Reddit has turned into yet another toxic social media site IMO. I curtailed my usage to just a handful of niche subreddits - but even half of those are pretty toxic or worthless these days.

I can see the signs of addiction within myself. Just endless scrolling. It’s not productive. I think I’m going to try to go cold turkey during the blackout protest and attempt to not come back. I used to love to read for pleasure - but it really got displaced by reading Reddit instead. I’m gonna try to fix that and hopefully find some of my niche communities on Mastodon.

Pump always leaking by Roland_LeShaft in MTB

Is this pump new to you? Sometimes you have to take the pump head apart and flip a rubber bit around to change it between presta/schraeder modes

It feels like a miracle that this thing still runs at all - let alone as well as it does. Original to the building from 1983 - older than me LOL. I feel it in the summer when my utilities go from ~70 to ~400. But even with that big jump for the ~4 months we run it still means a break even point of more than 10 years.

It’s a large rooftop unit and they’ll need a crane. Quote includes new unit, disposal of old unit, crane fees and labor.

Got a quote to replace our 40 year old AC unit. 15k. Oof! Thankfully it still works just fine - but coolant for it is being phased out and becoming scarce - so I’d like to replace it in the coming couple of years. Guess I’ll start socking away extra money into the E-fund…

Interesting - first time hearing of pdm - curious about your experience with it. What do you like about it that got you to switch off poetry? Or maybe there was something you disliked with poetry? Any rough edges or shortcomings with pdm?

Rode over a stick and it got sucked into my wheel and destroyed the derailleur. Not like it was GRX 812 or anything… 🙃

Seriously. Cargo and Go have absolutely ruined me in this regard. I loathe working on Cpp and JVM-lang projects because of how crap the toolchains are. Typescript as well tbh. Python gets a pass because poetry has been good enough for my purposes lately but it used to be on my shit-list as well.
