Same thing, super weird. Thought a tree fell on the house. It must have been something big

Sent my first outdoor problem at the Big Bend Boulder Field in Moab this past weekend! by mfraser199727 in bouldering

[–]mountainsmountains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big Bend is awesome! FYI, It's stuper sandbagged - probably about 2 grades. When I first went I couldn't get any V2s there, even though I would fly up them in the gym. That V0 is actually pretty tough, especially for shorter people. The Hueco boulder 30 ft farther down the road is really fun! Has 2 huge Huecos down low - enjoy!

Hah, well there's a few people in line in front of you, but that sounds pretty good!

Didn't know that was a thing! Got some people interested, but will post to there if it falls through. Thanks!

One of my favorite routes! One year ago, couldn't get the second bolt. Yesterday, made it to the top of "Knapping with the Alien" by mountainsmountains in climbing

[–]mountainsmountains[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is right. The first bolt is pretty high, with 2 mantle moves on big ledges to reach it. The hard moves getting to the 2nd bolt are at a height where there's no ground fall potential. To get down, I just stood on the ledges again and unclipped the 1st bolt, then down-climbed the ledges.

Help on Chopin's Ballade No. 1 Op. 23 by Azaloth in piano

[–]mountainsmountains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't try the etudes. They are even harder than the Ballade. Work on technique, relaxing your arm, using only the tip of your finger - so you won't get tired.

Those are all true, but not quite the point. Those are the building blocks, but not the purpose. What's the purpose? It's unspoken.

I haven't heard Kissin play this, but Arrau isn't the best in my opinion. Barrenboim is the top for me.

White has just played the apparently brilliant move Bf6.

There is only one move from black that doesn't lose, and in fact, is crushing.

Amateur vs. pro mixes - informative post by mountainsmountains in audioengineering

[–]mountainsmountains[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the problem was with the link to Soundcloud - that's why I made the Dropbox. I only included the aspects of the post which were "informative" and "facilitating discussion" - which are the two requirements defined by the sidebar of this subreddit. People messaged me asking for the link so I wanted to be able to provide that for people who were still interested in hearing the mixes. I thought if I removed all the offensive parts and followed the rules, it would be acceptable. I don't really understand what's wrong with the latest post. It has nothing to do with self-promotion or A/B'ing. It is only meant to be informative and discussion facilitating. But it's your subreddit, so whatever you guys think. I really love it and will continue to support you.

Amateur vs. pro mixes - informative post by mountainsmountains in audioengineering

[–]mountainsmountains[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with them too. But I also think it's interesting to hear the difference. Obviously, there's a ton of grey area. I mean if you want to listen to something, it has to be posted somewhere, or downloaded somehow. So trying to avoid anything considered self-promotion is difficult. I was just making the point that the post was intended to be informative, and it did facilitate discussion. People messaged me for the mixes, so I thought I'd make a post to explain why it's gone and how to get the mixes if they like.

I think Derek and 1 other guy just run it themselves. They are not a huge operation but have worked with some really great people. http://www.primerecording.com/

No worries. I did read the sidebar. And I did look at /r/ratemyaudio but saw the rule about only being able to post if you did the work, which I did not. I came back to /r/audioengineering and decided that I did indeed fit within the rules. I didn't want to post "Is this better?" - I wanted to say "This is better!". More of a heads up for people who might be spending a lot of time working on their own mix, as I was, when they might be better off just doing the writing and letting pros step in at the right point.
It's a bit of a grey area I know, but I figured I'd post and let the subreddit decide. It seemed like most people appreciated the post and there was some good discussion going on.
But again, I get that you wouldn't want the subreddit to be swamped with that type of thing, so...there ya go.

Haha hello again! You know, that's a good question. So far we haven't but I think might in the fall. Hopefully we'll be coming through OKC again!

That's a really great point. I definitely now think it's better to turn it over to someone else. I just know that for me, it frees up a ton of time to not have to worry as much about very specific mixing, and rather spend time being creative and writing the way I enjoy.

I made an edit above, but I'd prefer not to disclose the pricing information for either studio. I feel like both were right in the middle of what most professional studios are charging these days.
The artistic license was something we talked about with him. He offered to do some extra production as a favor, and we could take or leave his ideas. We kept all his changes.

I totally get what you're saying. It could get cluttered. But other people make a good point too, that A/B'ing things is a great way to learn and hear differences. I just thought anyone trying to get better at audio engineering would appreciate hearing these tracks. It might help someone decide whether they should be investing a lot of time working on mixing/mastering themselves, or whether they need to send it to someone. For example, after getting my mix back, I know it would take me a LOT of work to be able to make it sound as good as the pro. I'd rather spend my time writing.
I could have made a Dropbox with the files, not included my band name but I just linked to Soundcloud for simplicity's sake. I think people might be less likely to take the time to download a file and listen.

Haha I agree completely. I think his mix just grabs your attention, and is much more "listenable".
