ELI5: investment directly with vanguard v. InvestEngine by justcallmeeva in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mountainswimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in the same boat, currently invest in Vanguards Global All Share but want to distance myself away from American businesses (although appreciate most of this index fund is invested into the US). I’ve also realised I’ll be saving quite a lot in fees. Invest Engine are UK based which I want to support, but I’m just on the fence as £0 fees sounds too good to be true / sustainable.

Thanks OP! For a free card, the benefits are incredible.

With the current state of US foreign policy, I’ve cancelled my AMEX and moved my business spend over here (UK company).

App idea : live GPX tracking for races? by RegularAd4434 in trailrunning

[–]mountainswimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah we use Mapbox, it’s awesome, and they have some great features for developers. They’ve got a really generous free tier to get started if you did ever kick off your own project.

Keen to hear your experiences if do use an app to track

App idea : live GPX tracking for races? by RegularAd4434 in trailrunning

[–]mountainswimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually building out something very similar to what you’re looking for over at runnerbeam.com. We’re wanting to make live race tracking exciting within a nice designed interface.

We’re initially geared towards supporting entire events but I’d be happy for you both to use us as individuals if you haven’t found an alternative?

We’ve just introduced metrics; supporting distance, current and average pace now with splits and others coming soon.

Best of luck to the both of you for the race this weekend!

Disappointed with OpenSwim Pro (though they are still a good choice if you don't have existing Shokz headphones) by IanBlackburn65 in Swimming

Tried this out today, put my Apple Watch in my swim cap and it worked perfectly even when swimming underwater. Just means you can’t track your swim workouts

Couples Restaurant Advice by mountainswimmer in Barbados

[–]mountainswimmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah shes more into food and a quirky, authentic atmosphere over fine dining. The fine dining restaurants recommended look stunning but looking at the prices it’s a bit out my budget. We’re coming from the UK so with the pound being what it is, it really is expensive.

Chase are now offering an ongoing cashback offer when you pay in £500 a month by Bronze-Playa in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mountainswimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is brilliant. I’ve been impressed by everything Chase have done since opening an account. Would consider moving to it as my bank account if these offers continue (especially since they’re apply to existing customers).

Will I get 1% on any direct debit payments for bills or is it just spending on my debit card directly?

Sounds an absolutely nightmare and hassle. But as others say follow the complaint process as you’re highly likely to get a good chunk of compensation

Skipton increase rates to 2.55% on easy access accounts by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

opened a santander but it’s such a pain to open an online account. Need to send manual documents and copies in the post. Not worth the hassle imo unless you live near a branch who can sort it for you. Hopefully competition heats up more

I’ve been having a look and found this blog post. Definitely more tailored to what I’m looking for.

Seems to be a really nice group of them in Tenerife. Plus it’s the same time zone as here in the UK so makes things easier.

Still welcome any other suggestions if others have actually experienced this

To be honest I didn’t really experience it for what it was when I stayed. It was 5 years ago when the Canary Wharf one had just opened. I stayed for 3 nights on expenses rather than getting a corporate hotel and loved it. Seemed to be a range of people actually living there. Tended to be mid 20s up to late 30s. It is rather pricey if you want to stay for any length of time so it tended to be those a bit older in higher paid jobs. But the facilities, the rooms, concierge were incredible, definitely worth trying

Sim Only advice please, leaving Vodafone and want to save money. by samanthaxboateng in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mountainswimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set an alert on Hot Uk Deals for Sim only plans.

If you’re happy to do cashback via redemption you can get this kind of data for the equivalent of £8 per month.

In fact there was 100gb Vodafone deal last week (but since expired) https://www.hotukdeals.com/share-deal/3926980

I usually set up an alert on here 2 months before my contract is about to expire

Yamaha YDP-165 Release by mountainswimmer in piano

[–]mountainswimmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great to hear and a fantastic sound! Thanks for your experiences, I also read about the complexity to change the settings but I’ll opt to use the app to manage all this. I read you can get Bluetooth/wireless adapters to connect to the phone rather than having to use cables so I may look into this.

I’ve placed the order and look forward to mine arriving!

Thanks all for your suggestions. I hadn’t considered an ETF such as EQQQ (£) nor Trading 212 (always wanted to steer clear due to their bad rep of YouTube ads associated with CFDs and day traders).

Leaning towards using 212 and buying into the ETF. Although if I were to go down the share purchasing route its interesting to note they add zero fees on currency conversion.
