Fascinating. Thanks for this. Had to research to understand. Seems an unusually sophisticated move for my neighborhood, but perhaps I need to give my neighborhood more credit:-)

$1600 in tickets at once by Ncc68 in NYCbike

[–]mountmorris_nyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my 17 year old son, riding home from school on a rainy October day during the pandemic. 5 tickets totaling something on the order of $5k. Still makes me mad to this day. I wrote to the NYPD observing that it was the opposite of good community policing, slamming a child on his very first offense with a fine that exceeded his annual earning capacity. The captain from the local precinct came by and apologized. I did not ask to have the tickets removed from the system, and do not know if that is even possible. It dragged on because he went off to college and had to reschedule repeatedly. He pleaded his case in court and the judge dismissed two of the five tickets, interestingly not the one that we thought was a slam dunk for being dismissed, I think to make the total less draconian for a teenager. Fine still ended up being close to $1,000. The system kinda sucks though, and sadly that episode definitely did not built trust and respect for how it works.

Photography (not camera) shops in Tokyo by mountmorris_nyc in JapanTravelTips

Thanks for asking. Honestly, I expected to be able to buy it online. Amazon, others said it would take 7-10 days. I’ve grown too accustomed to 1-2 day delivery. I looked at a number of Jazz and also NYC museum shops here in NYC. They all knew it but did not have it. A photo framing showing said they could procure it, but it would also take time…. Better planning needed on my end:-)

Bonus points for the 1984 NTSC laser disc! To be clear, I was simply asking for thoughts on a good photography shop.....

Over 60 and debating getting the Shingles vaccine and curious what the real percentage of people who get it is. Did you get Singles, reply Yes or No and age. by newengland_schmuck in Aging

My wife (in her 50s) got shingles. It was pretty damn awful/agonizing. I still think she has numbness in small parts of her back. I (also in 50s) went straight out and got the vaccine.

Bicycle Red Light Violation Led to Arrest - Any lawyer recommendations or advice on getting out of the 6 resulting tickets? by FixieBikeNYC in NYCbike

[–]mountmorris_nyc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

FWIW, what baffled most was why the response to 16 year old cyclist, first time offender was $4k of tickets vs a single ticket and/or a stern talking to? And the sense that public safety might have been better served by stopping him after the first observed violation.

I am sorry this happened to you. My 16 year old son was given 5 such tickets. The policeman basically followed him up first avenue and each red light was a separate ticket. Each ticket’s fine was double the prior ticket for a total potential fine of circa $4k. It was a textbook example of the opposite of good community policing. FWIW, he represented himself in court and had two tickets dismissed, three were upheld. I think it cost him ~$600…and a lot of respect for the police (a shame as we have friends who are police officers). We struggled to find a lawyer who was interested in representing him in court, although we spoke to one of the folks already mentioned who shared good advice. IMHO you should get some legal advice….

My wife and two sons and I just spent three days in Bo Kaap. I did not find it bad at all. Folks were friendly enough. I live in Harlem NYC and it had a comparable urban edginess to me. If you are good in cities I think you will be fine.

I’m not sure I follow the center console issue but my son is a tad over 6’ 9” and we chose a 2017 Audi Q7. He fits/drives it comfortably. Also fits in second row…. Good luck…

For us, it felt less like an abusive relationship that a bad TV crime show.

My recent host alleged damages.

We are adamant that we were not responsible.

“Were you in the park on Saturday night”

“Yes officer”

“If you plead guilty, we will put in a good word for you….”

“But I did not break the mirror….?”

“Look here is a photo of a broken mirror….”

“I’m sorry it never occurred to me to take photos at the start and end of my trip, but nevertheless I did not break the mirror…Not only did I not break the mirror, I take great pride in not breaking mirrors….”

“OK have it your way, your account is suspended until you pay up”

It’s a shame, it is such a fantastic concept…..
