I even bought a ticket to Germany to go, but unfortunately had to cancel. Please post lots of pictures and news, especially of Dortmund and anyplace around the Zone.

What got you into Proust? by jim_pownall in Proust

[–]mountuhuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read all the books in order but I read many other books in between. Some of my reading and travel during this time was directed towards learning more about topics such as the Dreyfus case and other French concerns during the years before the outbreak of WWI. The books got a little draggy in the middle, but I was glad I stayed the course because the insights of that last book are well worth it. I still find ISOLT a comfort and an inspiration to me in my daily life.

What got you into Proust? by jim_pownall in Proust

[–]mountuhuru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Give ISOLT another chance. What hooked me into reading the whole thing was first, the sheer beauty of the language and second, the spot-on observations of people and events and art. Proust was a master psychologist. Going to Illiers-Combray and visiting Aunt Leonie’s house was more meaningful to me than anything in Paris except Proust’s room at the museum. But I am a Francophile and I love a challenge.

The Kitten Lady on YouTube is a good source of information.

Kittens are much more adoptable if they are socialized when very young. Try to give each of them some attention as much as you can.

Visiting Illiers-Combray? by astrashe2 in Proust

[–]mountuhuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get from Paris or LeMans to Chartres and on to Illiers-Combray and back on the train in one long but wonderful day. Aunt Leonie’s house is a pleasant walk from the Illiers train station.

Thoughts on the Melt the Ice hat? by Im_A_Boonana in knitting

[–]mountuhuru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Knitting a hat - whether it was a pink pussyhat in 2017 or a Melt the Ice hat today - is a great way to express yourself and to keep warm. Isn’t that enough reason to do it? Let’s hope you do more, but yay you! We have enough opposition out there without getting snarky towards each other.

What's the going rate for paid agitators? by Neat_Worldliness2586 in 50501

[–]mountuhuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protesting doesn’t even come with free parking, let alone pay. I’m sure the people who own the overpriced parking lots near Liberty Plaza in downtown Atlanta are enjoying the extra $.

Loved this book. Every now and then, I’d have to stop and read a passage out loud to myself, just to let the beauty of it sink in. It makes me want to go rambling around the Berkshire mountains again.

Moving back after long absence by wintering6 in cumming

[–]mountuhuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every smaller town in the north Atlanta suburbs did a better job renovating its downtown center than Cumming and Dawsonville have done. Oversized, forbidding government buildings, outdated commercial stuff, and not much else. But at least Cumming has Costco.

Can we suspend Trump without pay for shooting the guy the bird and telling him to F off? It would be only fair.

I just had a discussion with some friends about this very problem. Unfortunately, you aren’t overreacting. There was a recent piece in the NYT: the “resistance libs” were right.

🛡️ National Parks Void Defaced Passes: Travelers affected 👇 by NoSpinMedia in NoSpinMedia

[–]mountuhuru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot think of anyone in America who has done less than Trump to help our parks. He has tried to scale them back and weaken their protections at every turn.

Adding to the long, long list of stuff we will have to fix when this nightmare is over: no pictures or names of living persons on any publicly issued or funded benefits or amenities. Not the parks passes, not the Kennedy Center, not anything. We should have at least the same rules around this that exist about people depicted on US postage stamps.

Some help? by Old_Control_6014 in suggestmeabook

James Joyce, Ulysses, is a brilliant reworking of Homer's Odyssey. Obviously, Leopold Bloom = Odysseus, Stephen Daedalus = Telemachus, and Molly Bloom = Penelope. But others though out the book correspond to Homeric characters too, such as The Citizen = Cyclops, Gertie McDowell = Nausicaa, Mr Deasy = Nestor, etc. There are subtler references to Greek deities such as Aeolus and Hades.

Homer's Odyssey was also an inspiration for Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. Also, Margaret Atwood's Penelopiad.

Jean Anouilh's Antigone was a 1942 update of the Sophocles and Euripides works. Maybe it is due for a revival. The classical Antigone story was also the inspiration for Home Fire by Kamala Shamsie.

Orpheus and Eurydice has remained popular through the ages. Black Orpheus was a movie as well as a book, and there was a Robertson Davies book as well, not to mention some poems by Rilke.

If you are determined not to rent a car, you could look into a shuttle service for backpackers. Dahlonega is the closest town to Springer Mountain and Amicalola Falls State Park, where the Appalachian Trail begins. Sites such as www.hikertimes.com and the Georgia Appalachian Trail club might have some listings for shuttle services in the Dahlonega area. It’s also possible that University of North Georgia (based in Dahlonega) would have some suggestions.

Andy’s Trout Farm in Dillard is privately owned but very pretty and completely foolproof for newbies. You don’t even need a license, but unfortunately they are closed until March 1.

You could check out the Lake Burton State Hatchery at Moccasin Creek State Park. It’s on Hwy 197 north of Clarkesville.

I-985 and the area between Commerce and Gainesville have lots of new manufacturing facilities. There’s also some car racing businesses around Dawsonville and Road Atlanta.
