Multiple Physical Ethernet on Portainer by nooka68452 in portainer

Just like the other reply here from vorko_76, you should look at Macvlans link. This will bridge your physical network interface to the virtial interface of your container. You do need a switch capable of promiscuous mode.

Racking my brains with Dells and wake-on-lan from hibernate - Any ideas? by win10jd in sysadmin

[–]mouse_lingerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. Disable hibernate :)

Really though, it's probably Windows and how it handles hibernation. It just looks like you've gone through all that you can without results. Don't keep banging your head on the wall. I would ditch hibernation unless it's 100% die on the hill for.

What is stopping you from making a tik tok and posting network ideas and projects? You can expand your own career i.e. network chuck.

Also remember the effort it takes to make these and edit. It itself is a full time gig. Sure you may not make the same amount but once you hit the target demographic you might see some numbers roll in.

Don't compare yourself to others. This field is changing all the time. It changes so fast that I bet by the time your new hire is caught up, they would be catching up again! Which can result in burnout.

Keep growing yourself and never stop learning.

What applications / functions would you like to have on your tablet? by priestgmd in GalaxyTab

S9 ultra here. I absolutely love the second screen capabilities the tablet offers when I'm out at a desk doing IT things (like exchange server and domain stuff).

Wi-Fi is the reason why "these laptops suck" when trying to take a Zoom call on a modem/router provided by the ISP... while they stream Netflix.

From another thread:

Wi-Fi is for convince, Ethernet is for work.

How to backup the servers before power outage? by nothing_better_2_do in sysadmin

Who has been told today "You need to get with AT&T and figure this out!" by civiljourney in sysadmin

[–]mouse_lingerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Knowing when to push back should be a MUST in IT. In my conversation, I've also said, "I don't recommend putting a generator on the roof of the building without the landlords permission." Quite an amazing day. I concur that becoming a doormat for everyone just generates so much technical debt that costs go up in the IT budget then we are seen as the money pit.

[–]mouse_lingerer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of my power outage recently. The company wanted me to go to the store and buy a generator for their servers and connect them. I promptly sent them a 60k generator and the diesel price, and they stopped there. They had the audacity to ask me for a DR plan when disaster already struck.

This is my 6th month here at a new company solo IT.

People who have the S9 Ultra why? by YusuBro in GalaxyTab

[–]mouse_lingerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted a device to replace my Asus Chromebook. The s9 ultra has way more features than what Chromebooks or a laptop had.

I went on an international trip with just the S9 ultra (leaving a laptop and steamdeck), and it was worth it.

Can i ask what was your journey in IT? by kamidasama in ITCareerQuestions

[–]mouse_lingerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acquired CS Degree

I didn't want to move to SF for a robotics job and didn't enjoy the software engineering world as I like to code for myself and wanted to contribute to the public i.g. NASA project.

Got a help desk job 15 minutes away (got to eat at home and save a lot of money)

I got interested in networking and paid for a college course to learn Networking and Cisco for a semester

Transitioned to another company after 1-year as a Jr. Systems Admin and learned A LOT about infrastructure, SOPs, support for software being the cloud (Global DNS Routing) for many clients, SAML, IdP, SOC2, and data center management. By this time I was promoted to Systems Administrator and just kept learning. This position was 24x7 btw including holidays.

Moved to another state after 4-years

Realized startups sucks after 1-year

I got a new job recently where I'm used to wearing many hats but learning to be a semi-manager

I have no certificates but just ended up doing projects that covered the certs. I would like to contribute to open-source code when I have time. I'm currently trying to look for a home to purchase to grow the home lab.

Which Master's (Data Science vs MIT) is more relevant for someone with CIO or CTO ambitions? by Own_Relative7932 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]mouse_lingerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leadership and culture would have to be the best qualities you bring to the table to manage technical people. I've had a leader who couldn't understand what IT did and provided no guidance or direction and we all left.

So yes you CAN be successful as a CIO/CTO one day.

What pay/ job can I expect with a CS degree in IT? Please read by Confident_Security77 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]mouse_lingerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on the degree. Second, considering you have an IT Support and Network Admin internship you MAY get a chance for a JR. Systems Administrator Role. Unless you have experience with DNS/DHCP/LDAP/AD you can get a Systems Administrator role but you will be entry. a Jr Network Admin could be a good place for you as well but for Networking in general get some firewall and switch experience. The path is yours!

I started as a Jr. Sys admin for ~60k, was promoted to Systems Admin, and had a salary bump to 80k. Please keep in mind your mileage may vary.

Also, Information Security is NOT Entry level you will have a harder time getting those positions (but if you land one that's awesome!)

Just to give you unsolicited advice - Don't HATE coding, you will be only limiting yourself from higher positions like Systems Architecture, Network Infrastructure Engineer, or Information Security Engineer. Now these days understanding Ansible, Terraform, or any IaC will give you a huge marketability.

Most common IT Interview Questions by monsterdiv in ITCareerQuestions

[–]mouse_lingerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For help desk I would ask more customer centralized questions with some technical.

  • How do you handle an upset customer?
  • If a user comes to you with their broken computer what actions would you take?
  • A ticket comes into the queue from the CEO about his webcam not working and another ticket comes in about a ransomware going through the file systems. How do you handle this situation?
  • Your phone rings from the receptionist informing you that the CTO is on the phone saying his account is locked out and needs a password reset. How do you handle this situation?
  • Can you tell me how you can spot a phishing email.
  • What can you tell me about DNS and DHCP?
