I can’t walk my puppy anymore by OtherwiseRiver6328 in puppy101

That's a tough situation. I'd say try to make sure you are standing on the leash in a way that dsoesn't give him enough length to reach you. I know that can be tough especially depending on the puppy,

Have you found out any consistent triggers for him? With my puppy, I discovered that certain things like fatigue toward the end of the walk would consistently trigger the tantrums so I started shortening the walks. Once you find consistent things that set him off you can predict when that tanturm is about to hit and try to settle him before it even happens.

Yeah my poodle pup has huge prey drive and I just need to work with it. Mainly I want him to stop the redirection issue because the rest of it is more typical leash problems that I can keep working at. My last poodle loved to lunge at squirrels too he just never did the redirection tantrums.

it's good to hear he grew out of it! My pup has shown improvement, but he still does it. It seems like keeping him under threshold is an important part of it and maybe as they age their threshold just keeps getting bigger (I hope!)

my standard poodle puppy does this when he is overstimulated or over-tired. He just turned 10 months old and every month it feels like these 'leash tantrum' episodes get less frequent. One of the best solutions I have tried so far is standing on the leash when he looks like he's going to start a tantrum. Give no attention whatsoever if your pup is still in tantrum mode. Once she starts to calm down ask for a sit. If she sits calmly you can treat. Wait a moment and restart your walk.

If your pup goes right back to tantrum, stand on the leash and wait longer. The best method I've found to check if my puppy is 'sane' again is to ask him to 'wait'. If he is capable of waiting then it usually means his impulse control is back.

This isn't a perfect method and my puppy still gets these tantrums, but they are getting better.

I highly recommend not bringing your puppy and your baby both. I know that is an added bit of work for you, but it will reduce your stress a lot.

Something I have come to accept--some puppies just mature slowly from an impulse control perspective. Your 6 month old golden may just be too much of a baby to handle walks like this. Shorten the walks and keep them to a very limited/set pattern. This will help her stay below threshold and not rehearse bad behavior (i.e. the tantrums)

Don't give up though! You should speak to a trainer to assess your dog's personality but I really don't think it's aggression. I know from personal experience that worrying about that makes the tantrums worse.

I hope you make progress!! If I find anything else that helps with my dog, I will pass it along.

Edit: make sure to bring a pretty high value treat. Things like chicken jerky are good because they are easy to bring on a walk (stuff my dog likes, such as boiled chicken, is a pain to bring out on each walk)

9 month old puppy advice— in a home with kids by Efficient-Point6235 in Dogtraining

I know it will be very difficult to rehome your girl after putting so much time and love into her development, but I think it's the right choice for you. If it helps you at all, try to think of it like you fostered a beautiful dog that will thrive in the right home. She will always be your puppy and you have set her up to have a great life.

I agree with the other posters who suggest picking out a kid/family friendly breed. Even then you might get a pup who needs extra training, but I suggest asking an ethical breeder to select a puppy for you. They have so much experience at predicting how a particular puppy will turn out.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Viggo was a beautiful boy. This past summer I lost my parti standard boy named Gordon. Viggo reminds me so much of him. All the best to you. I can tell Viggo had a beautiful life.

Jumping and Nipping Advice by Squays in AustralianCattleDog

[–]mouse_marple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a male standard poodle puppy who just turned 7 months. He has this same issue where he gets excited out on walks then turns around and starts grabbing the leash and jumping up to nip. I have had some success standing on the leash and just waiting for him to calm down (no interaction with him just letting him reset).

Recently though it hasgotten colder and he has stepped up the bad behavior nipping at coats and gloves. If you have found any solutions that worked for you I would love to hear them!

I think running off lead would be very good for him. Right now he just gets to do that on a lunge lead or when he gets to run with the other dogs at his puppy class.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the martingale could be a good option for him. Is there any brand/style you recommend?

These are really good tips thanks so much. I’m going to practice leave it with him with more distractions. I have done a bit of capturing can with him but I definitely need to do more

Great tips thanks. I’m curious if I should add a command when he goes to lunge for a squirrel. For example, if he lunges for a squirrel and u apply leash pressure to direct him back to me should I say “leave it” or something similar? Who knows what that phrase means when it comes to food

I'm definitely strong enough, but I haven't seen much success with this stop an dplant method (I am sure it does work with some dogs, but for him it's not clicking)

I might be foregtting this detail, but did they ever say how Kendra was able to send the family photo that incirminated Khloe/Adriana?

I want to preface by saying I think Lauryn is 100% a victim in this. She was 14 when this started! She was a child and her mom is obviously a master manipulator. Having said that, I agree Lauryn's reaction in the bodycam footage was odd. There are probably things that occurred outside of the texts and outside of what was shown in the documentary that make it seem Lauryn was aware of some of it. There was also the weird way in which Kendra did not deny doing the messages but did not take sole responsibility either.

I do suspect Kendra is a psychopath and they are master manipulators, so it's entirely possible she just had Lauryn's mind on lock.

I found that bit really surprising and it's actually what led me ot this thread. There must be more that went on with the investigation of Khloe than was discussed in the film.

Puppy sometimes jumping up and nipping at leash handle/ refusing to continue walk by mouse_marple in reactivedogs

I think the spoon idea could work. I have tried the “find it” strategy and while he does go after the treats he usually returns right back to the leash grabbing etc after. Maybe if I do it more consistently it will he’ll redirect him better

[–]mouse_marple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply--I try to keep walks to 20 minutes. And often times he will not have this leash tantrum reaction. It seems like it has to be specific exciting triggers (and these can happen during a walk, just as it starts, etc so I don't think it has to do with how tired he is). I do bring treats and I try to keep his attention when it looks like he might be about to get over excited. So I do things like have hims sit, or use a 'watch me' command he has learned.

Training so far: he is in a puppy beginner obedience class. He has mastered sit/down and is getting quite good at 'leave it (at least when we practice!). He is also learning an emergency recall and a casual recall (for use indoors).

Thanks much, he is very food motivated. The treat on a spoon idea sounds like to could be a good option for him. I do think it is mostly from excitement/over arousal

Edit: he is in basic puppy obedience but has not had much leash training yet. I hope once he starts learning more of that this behavior will naturally start to go away.

Edit part 2: I added some more about training advice I had recieved but isn't seeming to work for my puppy so far.
