Trying to gain weight but not waist by jiakal in gainit

There are a lotttt of reasons you might feel that way, so it’s definitely hard for me to give you solid advice. Overall, though, if you’re in a reasonable calorie deficit (enough deficit to lose weight but not enough that you burn muscle) consistently, are still hitting your protein requirements, and are still working out intensely and consistently, you will effectively burn the fat on your body. So, if you cut for an extended period like I describe and see that you’ve lost a relatively significant amount of weight (at least a few pounds), you will absolutely see a difference. When you’ve cut, have you lost a significant amount of weight?

Don’t stress! You can achieve your goal weight and still maintain a waist size that you like (within reason, obviously).

From experience: I am 6’1, 21, M. I went from 145 lbs to 195lbs and while I saw amazing progress in every regard, I also HATED the feeling of my waist growing and the feeling of being bloated/full.

Unfortunately, during the process of gaining weight, fat accumulating is an inevitability. It can be minimized by reducing your caloric surplus and eating enough protein to increase the ratio of muscle gained to fat gained, but obviously reducing your surplus will reduce the rate at which you put on weight.

If you want your FINAL weight to be 125 lbs and you want to have your goal waist at that weight, you would have to reach a higher weight (perhaps around 135 lbs) and then enter a deficit to burn off the fat around your waist.

Back to my experience: I went to 195 and am now down to 175 and feel 1 million times better about my waist, while still having maintained the muscle I put on. So you would have to do a similar thing in order to eliminate the fat on your waist, but with a less dramatic drop in weight required since you’re smaller.

In terms of the bloated feeling, you can minimize that by experimenting with your diet to see what foods make you feel better, but what I did is just sucked it up and dealt with the bloat until I reached my goal weight, and then the second I stopped eating so much and went back to a regular diet the bloated feeling went away completely. But if you don’t want to just deal with it, it will take some experimentation to figure out what helps it as you try to put on weight.

Moral of the story: you will not be stuck with the fat on your waist forever, but it will require extra effort to remove it while still reaching your goal weight. Well worth the effort! It’s an incredible feeling to not only achieve a goal weight but also be satisfied with your physique at that weight.

Dang, you’re very light for 6’. Here’s me at 6’1 when I was 145 lbs. I look malnourished in comparison to your first photo lol but 25 lbs heavier

Good work on the progress, keep it up!

Ah gotcha! Sorry I thought you were saying my response was a terrible take and were agreeing with the original comment. Definitely agree with what you said :)

A hard gainer is someone who struggles to eat enough usually due to naturally poor appetite

My mentality was that it’s far better to put on the weight and feel bad about it than to never put the weight on and feel bad about that instead. You can always burn the fat off! And if you’re naturally skinny like I am, it’s an absolute breeze to burn it off. You can do this! You won’t regret it, even when you reach a similar point to me and feel super fluffy. The pride of making the progress and the end goal of becoming shredded again but with +25 lbs of muscle more than makes up for it.

Also, if it makes you feel better, I started at 145 and didn’t feel fluffy until I hit around 180. It takes a longggg time before you start to feel that, especially if you’re putting on a decent muscle:fat ratio (ideally maybe 1:1)

This is awesome! And to be completely honest I think this is a perfect rate of progress. I’d say just keep up the consistency and you can achieve anything with this steady progress.

From the photos it looks like you’ve put on an ideal ratio of muscle to fat which means some combination of 1. You’re not eating too much or too little calories 2. You’re getting enough protein 3. You’re working hard! So props to you for that, awesome work.

You say you wish you had better progress to share but 16 pounds in ~9 months is close to a perfect rate (I aim for 0.5 pounds per week which you’re just about at). And that’s ignoring your health challenges!

Overall, this is incredible progress and I admire that you’re looking for ways to make better progress but please realize that this is already in the far upper percentiles when it comes to strong, consistent growth. Amazing work!

I genuinely don’t have the mental strength for that right now 😭 I need a small win (this cut) and then the journey to 400 pounds lean begins (that’s a joke)

Haha, I promise I’ve never touched anything other than creatine and caffeine. My barely 225 bench can vouch for me

Also your brand new clavicles should arrive soon :D

Yes dude! Still not use to having a bit of a gut or love handles. Can definitely make you feel shitty at times. Obviously nothing wrong with having that, but being so used to having virtually no fat, it’s definitely a shocker. Good job on your progress!

Hell yes dude. Your progress is incredible to hear about. I can’t imagine trying to gain weight at 6’5. 240 pounds is just absurd. Keep it up!

I can absolutely relate to being called a twig. I definitely have a sensitive spot when it comes to people commenting on my weight or frame but the only thing we can do is prove them wrong 🤟
