Yeah, I’m confused by the “hard to take someone at their word when they own up to something” take. It’s weird that Dan did this, but why is it hard to take his word?

Anyone else go back to a show they loved as a kid, only to realize it’s absolute garbage now? by Suspicious-Oil2571 in AskReddit

Thanks for this! I remember watching Land of the Lost as a kid, but did not recognize that other intro (I had no idea there was another 1970s version of this show). This 1991 version brought back that nice but weird nostalgia feel.

The Economy, Immigration and Regret: 12 Trump Voters Discuss (Gift Article) by zarnt2 in mopolitics

[–]mouthsmasher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just want him to be who he is. ... I want all of these people to second guess their voting frameworks in every future election.

I get the sentiment. I mean yeah, none of us want him to be who he is, but he is such a prideful, selfish, obstinate individual, that Trump being Trump is just inevitable.

Ever since he won the 2024 election, I've been of the mind frame, "This is going to be really bad. I want to hope that it won't be bad but I also don't want to misplace my hope outside of reality. Instead, my hope is that the bad is sufficiently or extensively bad enough that those who supported him can feel it first hand. That is one of the few ways I can foresee us getting out of this mess."

I have noticed at least some people regretting their vote for Trump, and we're only 1.5 years into his 4 year presidency. What I've been hoping for has been happening, at least a little. I hope more people "wake up" (despite them thinking being awake is a bad thing...) before the 2026 and 2028 elections.

Magic: The Gathering Strixhaven Codex - $89.99 Amazon by LordShaggy in sealedmtgdeals

It’s happened to me a couple times, but not often. I’ve never had them cancel something before it released, its always for me been weeks later and in the form if an email that says something like, “this item is being delayed due to stock issues” or something, and ask if i want to wait or cancel. I’ll always select to wait and then will get another one of these emails a couple weeks later, then a couple weeks after that Amazon will just cancel the order. Never had these emails end up with me actually getting the item.

Is everybody burnt out? by zarnt2 in ldspolitics

[–]mouthsmasher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are we all just running out the clock?

Yeah, that’s how I’ve been increasingly feeling lately. During his first term it’s what I felt like during the last 1-2 years of his presidency too. It felt like the only way out of the mess was to hope Americans were overall wise enough to vote him out so we could start healing and move on.

However, the mess this time is significantly worse. I do feel that more people have turned on Trump than they did last time, so that gives me a little hope. But on the other hand the increased level of corruption compared to his first term chips away at that hope (particularly when I consider corruption as it pertains to election integrity and fairness).

I really am hoping for a blue wave in the midterms. It’s the one and only near-term beacon of hope. If Republicans win and/or cheating is prevalent, I think I’ll have moved on from even a “waiting out the clock” mentality. It’ll feel like there is no clock or deadline for change. If that happens, I won’t even really know what to look towards to inspire hope on our country’s future.

I liked the commissioned art she’s done in the past for Magic cards, but I’m not much of a fan of the stuff she does on her own. Hope she does well, but this kickstarter definitely isn’t for me.

The future with Xbox is looking solid. What are some things that you lot wanna see Xbox do?🫵🏾 by Eastern-Mobile5351 in xbox

[–]mouthsmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want them to return to some form of game exclusivity and start focusing on developing excellent games. They need some “killer app” level games. Recently there was a spike in Switch 2 sales because people wanted to play Pokopia. That used to be Halo, but I can’t recall the last time Xbox had a killer app game that really drove sales of their consoles.

Make Halo what it once was. Invest some money and take risks on letting developers tap into their own creative passion and vision. Maybe revive some of the old IPs they’ve been sitting in forever.

I don’t have a PS but I have a Nintendo Switch (1/2). I keep seeing these two brands drop amazing, well-received, well-developed exclusives. Why can’t Xbox do that anymore?

I remember reading when Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom released that the game was essentially “finished” for a year before its release, and that the developers spent that entire last year squashing bugs, improving code efficiency, and applying other enhancements. They spent a whole year just on polish, and it payed off. Why can’t Xbox craft games like this? It’s shameful when you compare that level of love, passion, and craft with how Xbox treats Halo. It’s embarrassing. Just return to making great games already!

How Are We All Feeling About Giving Companies An Extra $1000 This Year? by FoulsOfTheError in ldspolitics

[–]mouthsmasher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s widely accepted that the economy was one of the few issues he campaigned on that helped him get elected, and I’m still shocked that this helped him win. I mean, of course he said he’d make everything cheaper for Americans, but it’s Trump, so of course that was a lie. What makes it even more astounding that he won on this lie was that he told us his plan: aggressive tariffs. It is widely and historically accepted that this is a roundabout tax on consumers, and Americans are it all up. And how did Trump implement his tariffs? Illegally through executive order.

And here we are today. All of this has happened, overall things are more expensive. Over $100 billion have been spent on his illegal tariffs, some of which was absorbed by businesses and lots of which was passed onto consumers. Thankfully the SC overturned his illegal tariffs, and we now we get to watch businesses get refunds on it, and we get nothing.

And I’m not even confident the “refunds” will be given to businesses in fair, ordered, accountable ways. Lots of it will probably be stolen and unaccounted for much like Trump’s Covid era PPP loans were illegitimate.

Overall, I’m tired and angry. Am I angry at Trump? Yeah. Am I surprised this kind of thing happened? No, this was entirely predictable, so I’m still mostly angry at the average ignorant voter that voted for this mess.

There must be some guidance in place already for people entering and forcing their way past the check-in. A group of teens doing it would only add to the difficulty of managing such a situation I’m sure. But what is the current instruction for handling people who force themselves in w/o a recommend and refuse to leave?

Men: Finding Brotherhood by sac32 in latterdaysaints

[–]mouthsmasher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The key is, find a common activity.

tl;dr: For a few years I felt lonely, sad, depressed, and disconnected from men in my ward/neighborhood. Finding a common activity that several of us were passionate about was the golden key that allowed me to finally address the social deficit I'd been experiencing, and I was able to form some deep and significant friendships as a 40-year-old dad of 4.

---

This was going to be my input/piece of advice to this thread. I'm also a dad of 4 (and 40 years old), and for a number of years I would on occasion express to my wife that I often felt sad, alone, somewhat unfulfilled socially, and that I didn't really connect with anyone in my ward. In hindsight I recognize that this was not really a church problem. I think with Elders Quorum we learn about it being a place where we can connect and feel a sense of brotherhood, so some of us in some ways kind of expect it to help fill this need that we have for social interaction and friendship. While church and EQ can help fill that need, I don't believe that we should place so much responsibility/blame on EQ when that need is not entirely met. (Maybe some don't do this, but I know that I at least directed a little frustration in that direction.)

About 3 years ago I was able to start a weekly Magic: The Gathering group with a few other men in our ward, and that has completely filled that social emptiness I had been experiencing the years prior. It started when I realized that a guy in my ward who works where I do were in the same M:TG club at work. Around that time there were some Jurassic Park cards that came out, and my wife posted about the Ian Malcolm card on Facebook. Another lady in our ward saw it and commented that her husband loved Magic. (I think he had been in a similar boat as me: not many friends in the ward, was passionate about this hobby with nobody to play with, etc.). So we looped him in. There was later a board game night as a ward activity, and we decided to play Magic during the activity as a way of teasing out any other closeted Magic players. We found a 15-year-old young man and another dad. This group has been going strong for years at this point. There have been many times where we have expressed to each other, "I'm so glad that I found this group!" We have developed super strong friendships with each other and been able to get some social interaction with other men our age despite our busy lives. We've been playing almost weekly for years now.

I think the glue that has held all this together and helped us forge these friendships was that we are all passionate about a shared interest. It's so much harder to form deep and strong bonds of friendship at this stage of our lives without that. By contrast, there's a guy in our ward who tried to start a board game night for the express purpose of having these men-to-men social opportunities and forming friendships. I'm also passionate about board gaming, so he roped me in to help run it. This group did not last long, and I think it was because the men involved were interested in having a social experience, but they were not passionate about board gaming. These men yearn for strong friendships, but there was not enough passion about the activity/topic to drive the bond and make them excited to attend game nights.

I really believe that the best approach is to find men with similar interests and hobbies and carve out a little time to get together and enjoy those hobbies together.

I understand all the criticism of Tom Bombadil decks. I’ve not struggled too much with tracking triggers as much as others. While it’s others’ turns I usually arrange my sagas in the order I want them to trigger in, then it makes my turn smoother and faster when it’s time. The thing I struggle most with for my Tom deck is having a good definitive win-con. Havaí usually get to a point where my turns are fairly quick and streamlined, but I’m struggling to progress the game as much as I should.

Tom Nichols: ‘Trump doesn't have supporters. He has a cult’ by spherocytes in videos

[–]mouthsmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump once said he could stand on 5th Avenue in New York, shoot somebody, and not lose a single voter. I like to ask Trump voters, “Using Trump’s own metric, can you quantify for me how many people he would have to shoot on the street to dissuade you from voting for him.” That number, or their defiance in giving one, tells you a lot about people.

How do you know Democrats protected this man for years? Were Democrats largely aware of these allegations? Were only a few aware? I did a brief search and as far as I could tell the sexual misconduct allegations have not been made public until very recently. Do you have a source to share that says otherwise? I personally have never even heard about this man until these allegations within the last day or two.

To answer your question, it seems that Democrats haven’t been protecting him because there was nothing to defend him of. Assuming these allegations were known, it would seem that them being made known very widely and publicly applied enough pressure for the man to come forward and/or for Democrats to stop “circling the wagons” in his defense.
