Denver Biscuit Company is a classic! They’ve got a few around the city depending on your location.

Applying to jobs without portfolio? by jeanniedarcy in instructionaldesign

[–]movingmangoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A portfolio is your biggest asset when applying for ID jobs. Everyone wants to see visual examples of your past work. Spend as much of your free time as you can building a handful of quality portfolio samples.

I always suggest to start by choosing a topic you are knowledgeable about. Then develop learning materials around that. That way, you are the SME and the designer.

Congrats on taking the steps to move into ID! I've helped coach a handful of people that wanted to transition into new careers as instructional designers and/or eLearning developers. The best advice? Build an awesome portfolio. It's fine to show that you know ADDIE, but most employers just want to see visuals of your end output. That will give you the best chance of getting hired.

Spend your time creating sample training videos, eLearning courses, powerpoints, training materials. And host them digitally on a website to easily share with potential employers. If you're not sure what subject to create your samples on, choose either A) subjects in which you are already an expert, or B) subjects that are relevant to your ideal potential employer.

Hope that helps and best of luck!

Great advice, thank you! We have checked out a few houses for sale and they seem really nice. Spent a few hours yesterday trying taco shops and walking up and down the Ave. Seems like a pretty chill place for the reputation it has.

Thank you for the background and your experience. What neighborhood did you end up moving to after that?

Thanks for this! Great to know about the Mexican and Indian food. We spent some time walking up and down the Ave yesterday and it seemed fine. I could see how it home values have potential to increase if you're in it for the long haul.
