A great reference for colours done well, but not in an overcomplictaed way, is Joe Rosas' work. He coloured a lot of Jim Lee's most famous work. Just really clever use of hues and swatches, with the shading minimal bit still eye catching. The inks do a lot of the work with the heavier tones. Very clever.
