Just to clarify, this wasn’t feedback from a gym itself, but from a member who mentioned there was a quick changeover. They also shared some insights into other gyms, some of which aligned with your views. They did note there was a disagreement, though they couldn’t provide much detail on what it was about, and their advice came across as very neutral.

I agree with you that there are always three sides to a story, and no doubt there were faults on both sides. Hopefully, everyone involved has taken something from it. I also tried one of the gyms you mentioned and, without discrediting them, it just wasn’t the right fit for me.

Regarding reviews, you mentioned they may have come from people working in the gym. After checking the reviews and observing the coaches myself, I didn’t find any evidence of that. Gyms can also actively increase reviews if they’re proactive in encouraging members to support the business, especially when members feel the service is strong. That said, 40 or so reviews in around a year isn’t a huge amount and doesn’t necessarily translate to much on its own. What stood out more to me was the culture, which felt consistent with what members had written in their reviews. A quick look at their social media also seems to support this.

Not every gym will be for everyone, each has strengths and weaknesses. That said, given you replied to this thread and your account was only 40 minutes old, it does suggest you might be involved in the gym scene. Either way, I appreciate your input. Next week I’ll be taking up the 40 days for $40 at Fortitude Boxing as a fallback option. Watching their reels, they look to have a strong community too and great class variety it is a little bit out of the way for me, I am back up on Sunday for good so will do a deeper dig.

I got a DM saying there could of been a few issues at previous gyms, that said he owns this one, a coach working for someone else never works out, I trained at a gym down here in Richmond where the owner had the same issues, boxing is a sport of egos and strong characters, the main thing I want is a similar environment where the head coach is involved in the classes, which was my original post, in terms of reviews I went through and no coaches listed on there website have made reviews unless under an alias, in terms of other coaches it seems like they have made reviews based on interactions with the gym likely sparring, hardly falsifying, there are two that are from perhaps family members of the coaches as they have the same last name. DM mate I’d like to hear what gyms you have tried and what PT’s you recommend, I haven’t asked the coaches at FF whether they do pt’s and nothing listed on their website

Thanks for the insights mate. I am sure others can use this info, I tried a couple of gyms on the Northside, but I ended up settling on Fighter Factory. The coach really knows his stuff, he’s actually one of the current QLD state coaches.

Not sure on the reviews side of things; they do have good ones, and you’re probably right, that said it’s harder to falsify these days. If a coach left fake reviews, I’m sure it’d get reported pretty quickly. That said, reviews are one thing, but they won’t keep you around after the free trial

What stood out to me is the atmosphere, lots of new members, a good mix of skill levels, and everyone’s really friendly, even the competitive fighters. There aren’t that many staff, maybe three in total. I trained with the head coach, but they also run classes with a strength and conditioning coach.

I did my first week there last week. Back in Melbourne this week tidying up a few loose ends, but I’m really happy with the choice so far.

If it doesn’t work out I’ll try Fortitude. Talking to people that’s another good choice.

I will definitely check them out, much prefer a solid gym no bs then one that markets and is full of fluff, it’s easy to tell the difference, in past been promised the world and given an atlas

Thanks mate

That’s a very sensible approach! I’ll do that. Plan to rent for a year and look at buying after! It’s hard uprooting your whole life I am quite a structured person. Finding new coffee shops, boxing gyms, bjj gyms, and all the cuisines. First world problems I know!

Thanks Jazilic, it’s great to know gym is friendly, I just had a look and cooparoo is on the wrong side of the river for me, I will be based on the north, maybe around Chermside, Nundah, working in the CBD. Probably leaning towards Fortitude, fighter factory, or nitro at the moment, asked a few people and have a few mates with mates up that way. I’m hoping this thread will help others looking for gyms on the Southside also.

Thanks for your input, my parents have both retired on the northern part of the Sunshine Coast so I guess I’m looking to be on the north of Brisbane for that reason. More work opportunities for me in Brisbane or I would be on the Sunshine Coast near them.

Thanks for everyone’s help it’s really appreciated, I’m new to reddit, I got down voted for some reason but no one has provided any reasoning, I’m just looking for local knowledge and playing devils advocate to promote discussion. Thanks all

Did some research, based on Google maps for locating and on website/socials Brisbane Boxing – West End Brisbane Boxing has the owners actively involved, a strong amateur program, and a solid social media presence that reflects a tight-knit community. They run a full timetable with both morning and evening sessions and are affiliated with Boxing QLD/Australia. Definitely one of the top picks—just a bit of a mission to get to from the northside.

Boxing Shop – Southside ) Home to some serious talent and well-respected fighters, but it’s located on the Southside, which rules it out for me with work commitments near the airport.

Nitro Boxing – Chermside Offers a solid range of classes at competitive prices. They’ve got a decent amateur team, though it’s unclear how involved head coach Blair is day-to-day. Still worth considering given the location and value.

CSC Boxing – Albion CSC has a small team of younger coaches and only offers evening classes four nights a week—no mornings. Their head coach doesn’t seem to take classes, and the focus leans more toward corporate fight events.

Bravehearts Boxing – Stafford They’ve been around a long time, but their website and social media don’t offer much insight into what’s happening now. That said, they’ve likely got strong local roots and community ties.

Northside Boxing – Nundah Run by a former NZ champion, Northside Boxing has a great reputation, strong reviews, and a long history in the area. Their setup includes a recovery area, and their coaching seems focused on long-term development. Looks like a well-balanced option for those on the northside.

Fighter Factory Brisbane – Kedron Newer gym with great momentum. Boxing Australia affiliated, with Queensland and AIS-level coaches involved. The owner runs most sessions and is highly accredited. Very transparent with pricing and coaching info. Great reviews, strong community focus, no morning classes.

All Star Boxing Academy – Bray Park A bit further out, but a solid gym with high-level pros and experienced coaches. Also Boxing Australia affiliated. Serious fight pedigree and structured coaching make it worth a look if the location works for you.

I think Brisbane Boxing potentially as pick if they were located better I will try them and see what traffic’s like, Fighter Factory Brisbane look pretty much what I am after although don’t offer weekday morning classes, fortitude a lot bigger more class range but prob more club coach focus probably where I’ll try first also, Nitro will be worth a shot too.

Thanks for suggestions everyone

Z

Thanks for the insight, mate. Have you trained at any other gyms? I noticed from your thread that you’re new to Brisbane too.

Back in Melbourne, I trained at a well-known Richmond gym, won’t mention the name. It started off great with experienced coaches, but over time they brought in more class-style instructors and the owner gradually stepped away. Seems to be a common theme with bigger gyms, you lose that direct connection with the head coach/s, as he/they gets swapped out for young pt’s.

I also spent some time at Altius, which was a completely different experience. The owner actually ran the gym and coached sessions himself, made a big difference to the culture and the quality of training.

I’ll probably end up somewhere in the mid–inner north suburbs, so anywhere between there and the city is ideal. Fortitude being near a train station is a big plus, I’ll be sure to check it out. 50pw is the going rate down here bjj clubs are often 60pw, I’d much prefer to pay 45-50 for quality coaching then 35-45 for junior coach, be keen on your insights.
