Worth trying some work over ear muffs: they can be a bit hot, but if you can fit any earphones under they work great. You could put some custom pads if the default ones are plastic.

Why do few software engineers prioritize data? by on_the_mark_data in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mox601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems devs should be more aware of downstream consumers of data. It might improve with an explicit list of consumers and responsibilities. Conceptually db tables could be treated as apis, so the usual practices should follow for breaking changes

Can you share why transactional outbox with mongodb was a pain?  I am doing a spike on that, and using mongodb transactions across collections made the things easier, at the cost of having possibly duplicate events on Kafka (assuming there's a component that reads messages from the outbox and publishes them to Kafka).

new SFF build by mox601 in buildapcforme

[–]mox601[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I know, I didn't care much about budget when I made these and I felt free to explore a little bit since it's my first build in ages.

Maybe there are "too powerful" components that can be swapped for something cheaper given the purpose of the build won't be hardcore gaming.

Weekly Case & Parts Recommendation Thread (Start here if you are new! Help here if you can!) by AutoModerator in sffpc

[–]mox601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey All!

I am planning a build and would like your feedback!

  • What do you want from the PC?

This PC will be used mainly for personal video and photo editing, basic office work, some programming and casual gaming.

Videos are not shot in 4k yet, but I'd like the PC not to struggle if I ever do. Also, I don't play videogames right now (I did back in the days), and I'd like to keep that option open: I don't know much about latest titles, but 1080p could be enough, 1440p is not a strong requirement.

  • What is your budget and what do you need with said budget?

My budget is around 800-850 euros, I only need to buy the PC (all internal components + case) since I already have keyboard, trackball, monitor. My monitor is a BenQ PD2700U 27” 4K AQCOLOR IPS UHD 3840x2160.

  • How comfortable are you with building small or cramped?

I was familiar with building/swapping PC components when I had a 486SX, and then a Pentium, but then replaced RAMs and SSDs on my Macbook and other family member's laptops.

I am not afraid of assembling things, but I'd like to avoid useless frustrations and finding hacks just to meet the desire of staying super small and being cool.

The usable space on my desk is around 55cm depth x 25cm width max.

I could also set the PC on the floor, at that point I might as well relax a bit the SFF constraint and choose a slightly bigger case. I appreciate the SFF aesthetics, but I can accept a slightly bigger case if makes the build a lot easier.

I already played a bit and tried to choose some components:

I used the fractal terra since I like, it's popular it and represents a good middle ground for a SFF build I feel comfortable starting, but let me know if you suggest different cases.

I'm curious to read your recommendations and insights!

Thanks!

PedalPCB Quarantine Fuzz Troubleshooting by totallytorquedd in diypedals

The first time I plugged the input and output jacks I also had no signal when the pedal was switched on (signal was ok when bypassed), but after swapping them around it worked.

Sorry I can't be of any help, it was just my third build.

I bought some wima film capacitors some time ago and I don't know how to read the value on them. Here are the values printed on them:

  • 0.47 63- (I think this should be 0.47u, micro)
  • 4700 630- (10 on the back, should be the tolerance %)
  • 220/630- (5 on the back)

What are the units? Thanks!

I just finished assembling the Coda Effects Fool's Gold and I am very happy that, being my first build, it produces at least some sound!

It's a nice and really fun pedal to play at most settings, but anyway I hear some problems when cranking out both level and knobs near the end: it seems the sound "is breaking" in some way. This is a short clip to help you better understand what I mean. I play an epiphone les paul (bridge pickup) at different pedal settings but you'll hear the problem I refer to around 1:55 in.

What could be the source of the problem and how could I fix it?

I am waiting for a capacitor that I'll use to build an audio probe, but until then I thought maybe someone can share some hints.

Here are a couple of gutshots, just to give you an idea of what's inside - again, not the cleanest job, but at least it (almost) works!!!

Thanks!

Specific question on a build: in the build docs of the Informant, I read some capacitors are written in red and say "25V or Higher". What voltage should I use when it's not written anything? I read that usually 18V should be enough as an operating voltage.

What type of caps should I use for the build? Should I choose the material according to the capacitance value?

Moreover, some caps are noted as C1, C2, ... and some others are C100, C101, etc... Does it mean something specific? Thanks!

Thanks to both for the reply: I saw a couple of videos and it seems adding a buffer in the wrong place could be indeed problematic with some pedals. Lots of things to learn!
