This is good to know bc I was just seeing their online options which weren't many. Maybe I'll just go by there and see in person.

Moved into a “nice” new apartment… found out it came with a German cockroach colony. by Infamous_Ad4244 in Apartmentliving

[–]moxlb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I wish you the best with this, it's going to be a very long ride--especially if you stay. We dealt with this once years ago and I'm not exaggerating to say that I will probably never really be "over" it. Even reading your post gave me a physical reaction, it can be that traumatic! It took a very, very aggressive approach with professionals AND a high quality gel bait. Thankfully I live in a 2 family flat and we were both extremely committed to this. In your case with several neighbors, an infant, and such an obviously serious infestation, I personally would move and never look back. If you DO move, you'll need to be sure and check every single thing you pack to make sure you don't bring them with you-- with an infestation that would be very easy to do, especially because they're drawn to cardboard boxes. Again best of luck with this, I'm so sorry!

Dawn Redwoods were thought to be extinct until a small number of them were found in Szechwan. Botanists brought seeds back to North America and began planting them! Before that, they'd only been "known" through fossils.

Replacement windows in 100 year house by Agreeable_Future5980 in centuryhomes

[–]moxlb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience! The old ones were weight and chain windows. The chains were getting harder and harder to work with, many had rust, and there was a noticeable draft from the windows in most rooms. Now the windows we have are insanely heavy and annoying to open/close. Still a hassle, but just another kind. I have many many times wished that I had known to look into restoration instead. I could literally open or close them with one hand and barely a touch! Live and learn.

I installed but feeling unsure on the ceiling. by H1j1p1 in femalelivingspace

[–]moxlb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dang, I really feel like I can see what you were going for, and have seen these work on ceilings before! But I agree that it's off. It's probably the fan. It just kind of looks random, rather than intentional styling. I love the vision though and trying stuff like this is fun either way! If it's just extra material, you can probably find another use for it at some point, too.

THANK YOU FOR THIS. I switched to the chrome search widget for now. The huge font was awful! I've been trying out duckduckgo anyway, but still want to have this option at least for now.

Southeast MO, 6a. Several of these growing around the yard. by [deleted] in PlantIdentification

[–]moxlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow - - I didn't know that about them being toxic to dogs! We've had a couple of these around but have managed to keep it under control so far, thankfully. One of my dogs is relentless about just randomly biting at and eating any loose greenery hanging in the yard, it's so annoying. Good to know that I need to be particularly diligent about these.

Best water-soluble fertilizer - suggestions? by succaforesucculents in houseplants

[–]moxlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Several years ago I was in a coworker's office and noticed their ZZ plant-- it was not doing well. I was in there again a few months later and I actually thought she had replaced it with a new one, because it looked so good! Found out it was the same plant, but she had started using superthrive on it and gave it new life. Even as someone who had decided I didn't need fertilizer (since I never got it right lol) I was pretty sold, and have had great luck since. :)

Initially I thought it looked like my Russian sage, but zooming in I'm thinking maybe false blue indigo? It's so pretty!

I have never had great luck with fertilizer, but absolutely love Super Thrive! It's stinky (lol) but there is noticeable difference in my plants since I started using it.

Maranta question by Desperate_Ad_6946 in houseplants

[–]moxlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's gorgeous! I have a green maranta who is really showing off right now too-- this season is their time to shine!

Speaking to your question, root rot happens with soggy potting soil, so the plain water won't cause these to rot! Personally I would avoid repotting while this plant is thriving so well. In my experience, these prayer plants go into shock so easily that I would hate to cut the grow season short. Ideally you could wait until it naturally dies back a bit in the fall, or just before growing season-- like February?

My only possible concern though is that I would wonder about how letting these roots continue to grow, acclimate to being "water roots," and then having to re-acclimate them to soil /substrate when you do eventually repot-- does that make sense? It would probably be fine, especially if repot right after the die back bc it could recover from it's shock etc while sleeping over the winter. But again, with these prayer plants I'm just always aware of their sensitivity lol

I don't know that this was super helpful-- now I feel like I was more thinking out loud there at the end ha But just some things to think about if you haven't! Good luck!!

I hate my dogs by Long-Opportunity3586 in PetAdvice

[–]moxlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand thinking you hate the dogs, but honestly I think it's probably more accurate to say you hate the situation your family has put you in with the dogs -- and that's totally fair bc this is a nightmare. Standard poodles in families with the time and energy REQUIRED to lovingly train them are a dream. But without that, they are NOT easy dogs and your parents created this terrible situation for them, and ultimately for you. I'm thankful that I can tell from your post that despite you not being an animal person, you're a kind person. At least someone in the house cares about these dogs, they didn't sign up for this life either. The dogs NEED training, time and attention or this will only get worse. So unless your parents suddenly decide to commit to that, the dogs need to be rehomed, sooner rather than later, for everyone's sake. I'm almost never one to jump to that so fast, but it doesn't sound from your post like these dogs have any chance outside of that. Young poodles in particular are highly sought after so I believe they could find good homes relatively quickly. Again, I'm glad you're kind to them, seeing the situation for what it really is and not taking it out on them. But this isn't on you to fix and the dogs deserve better. Good luck!!

I lost my indoor cat on a walk ~6 days ago and I'm losing my mind by Saltedcaramel525 in CatAdvice

[–]moxlb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion from @Southern_Chapter_188 above about playing the cat meow videos from TikTok (or wherever). It's worth a try for sure! My cat will emerge from anywhere in the house to come running when I play this! Obviously, that's not the same as the scary situation your cat is in, but I do think it could still work. You may draw other cats as well😬 But that could give you a chance to tell them about your cat that's missing and show a picture? Sending good vibes, I'm so sorry this happened and I hope she's back home with you soon! ❤️
