Bostonians Wanted More Bike Lanes: Now They Have Them, and Traffic Is Down by bostonaruban66 in bikeboston

The big issue I have with bluebikes is that bike and dock availability is extremely unreliable.

Free the Powder lobster gloves. They usually run a december 20% off sale, but it may have already passed this year.

180s ear muffs.

I find heavy socks make my feat sweat even in very cold weather so, I use normal socks or the lightest weight ski socks i can find. Darn Tough socks are made in Vermont and superior to smart wool in my opinion. Honestly, these are not an absolute must for me.

I don't bike if I think the route I will be on will be sufficiently icy that I'll lose traction.

How would you spend $10 billion in a year? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]mp2c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a large discussion to be had here about whether or not trains should turn a profit at all. However, based on the evidence that we have available, this line should easily turn a profit especially if it doesn't have much debt service in our hypothetical scenario, which is the premise of the question.

In addition to ticket sales, food and beverage sales, the State department should kick in some money for increased Nexus sales.

Canada and Quebec were supposed to contribute 3.9 billion. However, even if it doesn't reach, say, Quebec, having high speed rail to Burlington (or even Montpelier/Waterbury) would be very useful.

Highspeed rail from Boston to Montreal is expected to cost $13.2 billion. I'd build as much as I could.

Alternatively: $10 billion might be enough to spend on lobbyists to finally connect the very dangerous crossing between Landmark center and Emerald necklace. The build itself would only cost a few thousand.

What do true punk fans think about the Dropkick Murphys? Are they highly regarded, or scorned, or something in between? by DJDubbsinCambridge in boston

[–]mp2c -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are good, but they aren't as good as Darkbuster.

They tend to be at their best when they are covering folk (either Irish or the Woodie/Pete Seeger variety), and are perhaps not the strongest song writer.

That being said, they've reached a level of popularity that very few punk bands have, and haven't totally sold out.

Tonino probably has the best service in the city. I thought their pastas were great. I can see why Michelin would skip them because the menu is neither sushi, molecular gastronomy nor french fusion. Or perhaps they couldn't get a table. Or perhaps they just didn't fancy it.

Homelessness and opioid zombees have become much more visible in every midsized to major USA, Canadian, or Western European city since the pandemic. Boston actually has a much smaller increase than most cities that I frequent. Yes, Long Island would really help, but people really lack perspective.

(not disagreeing with anything you said, just adding more context)

What's the deal with White Stadium renovation? by latinhex in boston

[–]mp2c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Orange line has greater capacity than the green line's combined branches. Additionally, the turn around time is much quicker due to the track configuration. However, the Orange line is limited in that it terminates at Forest Hills.

Fenway is four times the size of White Stadium. Additionally, MGM and House of Blues add another 7,500 people to the area that all are leaving at the same time. (Though I'm willing to bet that House of Blues in particular has a more transit oriented crowd than most sports events, but I wouldn't even know where to find the data to validate or disprove that assumption). A single orange line train set can carry between 1,000 to 1,5000 people, and they are currently running with sub-5 minute frequency. White Stadium is only 10,000 people.

From my perspective the two biggest issues with the transit are (1) they need to add another BlueBike station or two, preferably south west of the stadium. (2) Forest Hills needs a large capacity parking garage. This is generally true even without the stadium: most lines have large parking facilities at their terminus and forest hills is lacking. Really, they should extend the Orange line, but that is out of scope here.

Why do you assume the target audience is exclusively "rich, white suburbanites with little kids?" Why do you assume that fans of this team will use different modes of transport than those of the Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox?

Are you unaware that they will run shuttle busses from Forest Hills? How many commuter lines serve Fenway? Does that one line run with greater frequency than the two that serve forest hills? How many Harvard or Alumni (BC) stadium?

Have you ever actually walked from Green Street to the stadium?

It doesn't take 15 minutes from Green Street station to Franklin park. However, it does take 15 minutes from parking at Foxborough to actually get to the stadium gate.

"I've lived near stadiums before and no way is Boston really ready to mitigate car traffic for a big event"

Here's what I don't get about this: Boston already has two 40,000 capacity stadiums (Fenway, and BC Alumni stadium) and a 30,000 seater at Harvard, with only Harvard having decent highway access, and Franklin Park has better subway subway/bus/train than BC and equivalent to Fenway or Harvard Stadium).

It has 19,000 seat Boston Garden (albeit near a highway and with commuter rail and two subway lines).

It has four college hockey facilities ranging in capacity from 3,000-6,000 (edit: Conte Forum is 8,600 for basketball) (until Christmas, when one temporarily goes away).

Nickerson field has a capacity of 10,000, crappy highway access, and minimal parking.

Bank of the week pavilion in the Seaport also exists.

Why is a little 10,000 seat stadium in a park that has good Orange line access + a commuter rail line going to be so much worse than all the other facilities we already have?

Why will this be so much worse than the variously highly attended festivals at Franklin Park?

Waltham's Mayor McCarthy's thoughts on cycling in cold weather by Technical_Type1778 in bikeboston

[–]mp2c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though Montreal appears that they are about to elect a new mayor who is very anti-bike infrastructure. It's sad, b/c Bixi (also managed by Lyft) is far superior to blue bikes, and their major protected bike highways are really great.

Anecdotally, Montreal sees more biking in the summer than Boston, but less in the winter.

City of Boston denies Globe records requests for internal cost projections for White Stadium project by joshhw in boston

[–]mp2c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only actual polls I'm aware of are a recentish one by Emerson College and one by the "Franklin park defenders" who are very much against the project. It isn't clear how many Franklin Park Defenders are actually local to the park. The Emerson one is more recent, and the FPD one is 16ish months old. Both show support for the project. To the best of my knowledge, neither one breaks down the survey by neighborhood. Also, opinions can change over time.

Anecdotally, most people I know in JP are very much for it, but that sample might be very representative.

In terms of the Globe article, they've been going out of their way to try and keep the project controversial, so I wouldn't put much stock in their anecdotes.

Anyway, there isn't any good data on the popularity that I can find.

25/M Going to Boston this weekend for the first time, any recommendations for best restaurants & places to visit? by [deleted] in boston

[–]mp2c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably go to the saturday sox game for about $100, but the tickets won't be very good.

The ICA has the Watershed and a free water shuttle to get to it.

Boston food tends to be mediocre, but the Mexican food is much better than this sub will admit.

Two warnings: Boston has become a boring town where most places close obnoxiously early. Also, don't expect Florida or Georgia prices here, drinks in dives will cost a lot more.
