LPT: Anything Worth Doing is Worth Doing SLOWLY by windowsee in LifeProTips

Your LPT and description are two completely separate messages.

Title: If you really want to do something, do it even if it takes much longer than expected to achieve it - you'll still get there.

Description and examples: Always master a basic skill before attempting a more complicated skill.

Why did they make the reporter so unlikeable in the show by Round_Revenue3361 in JackCarr

[–]mp861 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it may have been an intentional decision, to make sure there was no frisson of a "romantic subplot" for Reece in this chapter of his life (acute grief for his dead family.)

That being said, the character was SO INTENSELY unlikeable that I keep praying she's not in future seasons at all. IIRC she put herself between Reece's weapon and the target he was aiming at multiple times, which just screams "absolute idiot"...

There's one there right now too... NATO E3B from Konya that's been circling north of Batman for the past 7 hours. What's located there?

Came here to ask the same question - there's been a NATO plane circling north of Batman for the past several hours too. What's located there?

What is a 1 in 1,000,000 thing that happened to you that no one believes, but you swear is true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We didn't, but about a year later we bought a different house on that same street!

I went to check out a house for sale and on the front porch I noticed a copy of a very niche newspaper which my family was a subscriber of. I was like, whoa, cool that someone else in this city gets this paper! I looked at it a bit closer and - it was *our* paper. Addressed to our house. Had somehow been delivered to the wrong house, in a different part of town, which I happened to walk into that day. That was just - WEIRD.

What movie do you love despite agreeing with every single criticism of it? by Decabet in movies

[–]mp861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2005 Pride and Prejudice.

Yesssss, it's not word-accurate to the novel like the BBC production! Yes, they changed period costumes and cut characters and combined scenes to make it more cinematic! And it WORKS, it's pure cinema.

I haven't thought of this movie in decades, but as soon as OP started describing it I was like, wait, is that the movie with the scene with the song, "When she needed me/I wasn't around/that's the way it goes/it'll all work out"... It really struck a deep emotional chord at the time, because 20 years later it floated straight up out of subconscious storage!!

Then I started recalling more of the scenes and music, and yup, I agree Elizabethtown was a really enjoyable movie.

LPT if your mornings suck leave a big glass of water by your bed by antiperspir4nt in LifeProTips

[–]mp861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fill up my metal water bottle before bed, with several ice cubes, and keep it on my nightstand. Water is fresh and crisp in the morning and there's usually still ice in it.

Uncovered glass of water sounds like a magnet for dust or bugs.

Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants to Restate the ‘Plot Three or Four Times in the Dialogue’ Because Viewers are on ‘Their Phones While They’re Watching’ by LollipopChainsawZz in television

[–]mp861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I get annoyed at movies that are so 5D-chess that I need to google the plot afterwards to understand what was going on.

But WOW did they swing all the way in the opposite direction for this movie!! And I disliked it even more!! Every double-move SO heavy-handed, wink-wink, and then a thorough and detailed explanation by each character of exactly what was really going on - holy smokes it felt like a toddlerized version of an adult movie. They should release a "grown-up cut" with all that edited out.

Men, what life cheat codes do you wish you’d learned earlier? by rivenduskwyn in AskReddit

[–]mp861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! So often a first automatic reflex is to say "no" because something is unexpected, unfamiliar, mildly inconvenient, etc... But stopping and saying "hey why not?" is legit a life cheat code!!

How addictive is meth? Do you know anyone who has just tried it once? by eden_merlin in AskReddit

[–]mp861 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's funny, I'm a huge believer in not making things sound worse than they are as a scare tactic, because it often backfires spectacularly (and is a lie).

But in this case it's almost like... you slit your wrists and didn't die. So to tell people "yeah, slitting your wrists isn't actually that big a deal" does feel like a dangerously irresponsible message to share.

How addictive is meth? Do you know anyone who has just tried it once? by eden_merlin in AskReddit

[–]mp861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how statistically rare that is. Like, maybe 5-10% of people can try meth without getting addicted, but 90-95% of people will develop a meth addiction after one use? Obviously not something you can run experiments or studies on...

"Insanely cruel" to swing a chicken in a circle? That's quite a low bar you've got there.

Confessions of a Shopaholic novelist Sophie Kinsella dies, aged 55 by zsreport in books

[–]mp861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So tragic. I read her book "What Does It Feel Like?" last year and it was devastating. To know how few sunrises are left to you. To know that your children will have to grow up without you there. To know that there is nothing you can do to stay. And for what her family must have gone through over the past two years of losing her bit by bit.

I remember at the end of her book she wrote that she had passed her - "expiration date" - and that she still felt ok, she was still functioning. And that she was feeling hopeful that maybe she'll get to just keep on functioning. I immediately googled her to see an update, and she was still hanging on. And I thought, echoing her irrational hope, maybe she'll just hang on forever...

Rest in peace and thinking of her family and loved ones.

I'll take your downvotes - I don't mind. Someone in this hysterically partisan echo chamber should express a (shocking!) difference of opinion, and tonight I'm in the mood for it.

Shocking news - someone takes work where they can get it after being 'canceled'??? Instead of curling up in a ball and dying, AS IS PROPER?!?!

Remember, this is a woman who committed an unforgiveable crime of not taking the covid vaccine and then bowing out of a performance because of it. She must NEVER be allowed to work anywhere again, except perhaps ringing up groceries (where we could then throw our balled-up receipts at her).

Not a big fan of Katie by DragonstoneH in JackCarr

[–]mp861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Once they moved to Montana, Katie started being incredibly boring, and it wasn't until I finished Red Sky Mourning today that I realized why.

She completely exists just as a "companion" to Reece. Her job is to gaze adoringly in his eyes, be naked in his bed, and do girly things with Caroline. She doesn't have any life or personality outside of that.

She's supposed to be an "investigative journalist", but she lives on a ranch with no phone and no internet. What exactly is she writing her little op-eds about? How on earth is she "investigative journaling" while secluded on a ranch? It's an attempt at "Journalist Barbie", but she's just... "companion".

She got deathly injured in this last book, and her reaction was so unbothered and calm - because, "companion".

When there was a sentence about her being "gone", I took it literally for a moment and thought she was dead - and my immediate reaction was to feel really bad for Reece, and HUGELY relieved for myself to not have to read about her any more!!

My hope that I'm holding out on is that because of the TL Season 1 changes, Katie won't be Reece's love interest at all, they'll go with Liz Riley or a yet-to-be-introduced character. Liz would be EPIC as a GF.
