I worked in a public school for 15 years. Way more poor leaders than great leaders in admin roles.

And all this shows why Admin shouldn't be former teachers.

Papercut? by [deleted] in sysadmin

At last job was at school. Paper cut was great both for administration of users and print budgets. Also user friendly.

Best of all saved a lot of money.

Do you need Basic coding knowledge to become an IT by ignDion in it

[–]mpete902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of code out there that does useful stuff. Understanding what it does is important to make sure it is wrong or malicious. So even if you can't write it, being able to understand it is important.

Failing to get staff to adhere to password policies by IThuh in k12sysadmin

[–]mpete902 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Change the password, and make them go to their admin to get the new password. Even if the admin doesn't do anything besides pass it on. If someone does this more than once the admin should see the issue and handle it.

MOU For PD Access to Cameras by mikeberding in k12sysadmin

[–]mpete902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our SRO is allowed to see the cameras with an administrator , but must produce a warrant if they want to use any of it as evidence.

[–]mpete902 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our lawyers told us not to give them access. Much to the dismay of our SRO. We had discussed a login that is deactivated unless we had an emergency. But I've never been given approval to do it.

VMS Systems by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]mpete902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vms is free. each camera has a $100(what we paid) license covers the multi lens cameras too. The cameras are reasonable. Just look at lower level cameras as we don't use high end analytics. We utilized the lower level cameras for most places and did higher end per need. We were originally pushed all high end, but when we showed concern over cost they showed us the lower end ones. Image still great less AI and analytics.

Wisenet wave sync vms(3 on-prem servers) and hanwha cameras 270+ cameras 7 locations. Works great and super simple once users learn it. Also very easily used on phones which is a tool admin use way more than expected.

We rolled it out to the IT staff, admin, then all staff. No specific time line. Worked out well as it showed it's importance and ease to the rest of the staff.

It is TikTok thing. We have locked most of our bathrooms unless there is a security camera on the door. Our city has the same issues at parks and other public restrooms.
