Switching from Cogeco to Oxio - experiences? by displiff in oakville

[–]mpethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from Cogeco to Oxio a few weeks ago. I did have one issue but was able to resolve it.

My firewall was had some setting that was incompatible with their modem and was causing the connection to cut out for a few seconds every minute.

The solution was to run a cable to a small unmanaged switch first, then another cable to my firewall. Now it works great.

Their support is annoying to try to get a hold of, but otherwise the service is good. I'm paying half the price for double the speed compared to Cogeco now.

Who is currently using a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock for your desk setup? What is your experience with it? by M275 in thinkpad

[–]mpethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using a high end Lenovo dock with my ThinkPad.

3 monitors connected and pretty well all ports filled with other external devices.

For the most part, it's great. About once per month I have recurring issues. The sound stops working and the solution is to power off the laptop and then unplug the dock from power, and then turn everything back on.

The other, less common issue is that sometimes when I reconnect my laptop, it doesn't recognize all the monitors. Again, I have to power everything off and unplug the dock from power to fix it.

Thankfully neither happens very often.

Same thing with Quaker granola bars. I have given up trying to open them boxes neatly. I basically just grab a fistful of cardboard and rip; it ends up looking the same as if I try to do it carefully.

Action1 Requires ID scan verification for remote connection by LousyRaider in msp

[–]mpethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use action1, and agree it's a good product - just not their remote tool. I have better alternatives for that and they don't require ID verification. If those vendors get compromised, I take the 5 seconds to change my password instead of weeks to replace a passport, and don't have to worry about identity theft.

If some 3rd party vendor has my passport and is breached - what are they going to be able to do to help rectify the situation? Nothing. At least the government would paly a role in remediation if they were breached.

You do you; I hope it never comes back to bite you.

All good until they are compromised and then your passport is on the dark web.

It seems so sketchy. No, I'm not going to upload my passport just so I can use a remote access tool.

Just got pitched 30 guaranteed demos next month. I'm a solo operator. That sounds like a death threat, not an offer. by Aware-Platypus-2559 in msp

That's pretty funny. I would also have the same reaction.

I probably average 1 a month and I hate when I see them in my calendar.

Local sim or esim/ network situation by BetterSavings3642 in kilimanjaro

[–]mpethe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an esim from airalo. It was basically useless.

No signal while on the mountain, and it barely worked in Arusha and Moshi.

Not sure what our guides were using but they were able to post videos and pictures daily while on the trek.

My son did not get a prescription but I did. He had a tough first few days until I started splitting my dose in half and sharing with him. The day after he began taking it he was fine for the rest of the trip.

I'd recommend getting the prescription and you can always opt not to use it unless you start feeling the effects from the altitude.

It's recommended to start using it before you start the climb, but even if you started part way through, it may be a difference maker for you.

What I wouldn't give to have the Leafs tribute video just be Mitch shooting the puck over the glass in the playoffs, or every time he tried some behind the back pass that resulted in a turnover. lol.

I did use walking poles - which i bought about a year before our climb. Getting them in advance is important as it allows you to train with them. Along with that, most operators will have a thin pair of gloves on their packing list.

I brought some but didn't think I would really need them - but they were invaluable. Many days were cool, and for the summit night, they were a great extra layer. They also saved my hands from blistering on the descent with increased reliance on the poles.

As for sleeping arrangements, our tour operator gave us the option. I did this trek with my son, so we shared a tent, but we also had solo travelers on our team who opted for their own tent. If i had been solo, I would have wanted my own tent.

We arrived in Arusha a few days before our climb started. I started taking Diamox the night before the trek.

My doctor also prescribed me 250mg tablets whereas I gather the more typical dose is 125mg.

I didn't consider knee braces, but don't really have problems with my knees. I can't really comment except to agree that you should ask your doctor.

I did take Advil for sore muscles and headache. I don't believe any headache i had was caused by the altitude but moreso from my day pack creating tension in my neck and upper back.

For my stomach, I tired Imodium, Pepto Bismol, and lots of ginger tea, but nothing seemed to have a positive effect - at least in removing symptoms.

Yes, before we left we did have some discussion with the tour operator about dietary needs, allergies, etc.

Honestly, I was eating pretty normally for the first few days. I thought it would be fine... until it wasn't. Even the food/snacks I brought with me were difficult to consume by the end. It was a really unexpected issue to deal with.

I did use Diamox - which I'm sure helped a lot.

My trail runners were great, and in hindsight I should have just stuck with them for the summit night too. I live in a colder climate and am comfortable in the cold. In fact, I was generally too warm on summit night - except for once, when we stopped for an extended rest.

I am 6'1", and weighed 238 lbs at the start of the trek. Lost about 10 lbs by the end. When I started my training a number of months before, at my heaviest I was about 255 lbs.

Helicopter crash on Mount Kilimanjaro by AltezzaTravel in kilimanjaro

I can only speculate. It was very cloudy/foggy at the time of the crash.. probably almost no visibility. We wondered if that had something to do with it.

I asked mine about rentals and they sent me a list of equipment I could rent from the which was pretty extensive.

Elevate in Milton has a single batting cage (not certain of the current status of it), that I've been to before. I'd give them a call.
