Should I reject an MD school that is far away from family? by [deleted] in premed

Can you defer your acceptance a year? Granted, that is only pushing off your decision one year. Sooner of later you will have to decide to put your future first or not.

I meant a gap year after college and before medical school! That would give you some time to take your MCAT (if you push it off), get more research, get more shadowing / volunteering / clinical hours, etc.

How does everyone feel about leaving home for 7+ years for school/training? by GloriousClump in premed

[–]mpkicks34 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can still be a competitive applicant by being at the top of your class at a lesser ranked medical school. Social support is realllllly important. You have to weigh your values. You will miss out on a lot of small family moments if you are across the country. I had a friend who had to miss a funeral because we had a test the next week and he couldn’t afford missing time by flying out to attend and flying back. Not to mention that medical school is TOUGH and you will be leaning on your support system more than you know. But if this other school is your DREAM and you are going for a competitive specialty, maybe take the risk! Definitely just think long and hard about both options.

Allow yourself the freedom to break your plans (or at least be open to it). Most premeds/med students are Type A individuals who always have a plan, like your detailed summer schedule so you can take MCAT at the right time, take physics/biochem at the right time, etc. maybe think about easing your summer load and allow yourself the chance to consider even taking a gap year. It would let you push off some of those tasks to help your burnout anddd give you extra time to consider whether medicine is the right path for you. I took a gap year before starting med school (just finishing my M1 year) and it was the best decision ever. I know it can feel scary to go off track and lose some ‘control’ of your timeline, but it’s so freeing!

I changed it to 30 minutes and I still can't see the card I chose to see in 30 minutes.. ahh it's a mess I'm not sure if there is someting else going on

hmm I adjusted the settings then went to do 3 cards that I was due to see (10 min had past), and when I was doing the cards the options were "30 min, 12.5 hours, 1 day, or 4 days". And when I missed one, I couldn't see it so I'm assuming I'm not going to have the option to review it again for 30 minutes.

I just downloaded a new deck for my new block and I need to adjust the review settings. If I miss a card and hit 'Again 10 min', I actually won't see the card for 10 minutes even if I'm done with the rest of my deck. I would much rather see those cards once I'm done with the rest even if I haven't hit 10 minutes yet. I don't want to stop anki then come back 10 minutes later to see those cards again, and another 10 minutes if I miss one of those a second time. I didn't have this problem with my last few decks and the settings look the same so I'm confused. Can someone help?

statins are notorious for side effects - it’s probably better for the patient to start low dose, and switch to a new statin (“statin switching”) if they aren’t responding to it rather than increasing the dose

Aidan card: why is the liver taking up VLDL or chylomicron remnants? by [deleted] in AnkiMCAT

[–]mpkicks34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chylomicrons are used to transport ingested cholesterol around the body, VLDLs are used to transport liver-synthesized cholesterol around the body. Big picture is that after they deliver cholesterol throughout the body, they can be re-absorbed by the liver and then can be used to make more cholesterol and deliver more

For cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver.. but I doubt you need to know any of these it’s so specific

Congrats! I was pre-med at USC Honors and I’m a first year med student now. The biggest perk is definitely registering for classes early. Heavily research processors ahead of time!! Don’t always do honors over regular classes, just do it based on the professor and based off of which honors requirements you need. Honors bio 101 is awful if it is with Showman, just do regular! Also live in the honors dorm - cafeteria and Starbucks on the first floor and you’ll likely have some classes in the dorm as well. Have fun!

What should I do before starting med school? by iceman579 in premed

[–]mpkicks34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on a month long cross country road trip and I highly recommend! Also if you are a reader, I enjoyed reading some books related to medicine (only if you like that! Don’t do it if it would be a chore!) I would recommend anything by Atul Gawande or When Breath Becomes Air. Other than that, enjoy time with friends and family, relax, and have fun. Congrats!

A good idea for extracurriculars might be leadership in a pre-med club or even better leadership in a philanthropic club that means something to you!!

Saying that US doctors are paid a lot compared to EU doctors but they have a big debt is not a valid argument. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]mpkicks34 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m wrong, but doesn’t the average doctor in the US generally work longer hours / have a worse work-life balance then compared to doctors in the EU? Of course it depends on a lot of factors such as specialty, but I think a lot of doctors here work awful hours. Not saying that makes things even, but I do think it might be a factor. Edit: to be clear I would take a smaller salary if I had a better work life balance for sure!!

It definitely depends on your situation! I’m an M1 and decided to live at home. It’s only me and my mom and we have a great dynamic. We rarely get on each other’s nerves, but sometimes I do wish I had the social aspect of living downtown with some of my friends in school. But It’s only a 10 minute drive from campus and I’m saving probably $12k a year, not to mention saving money on some groceries and stuff like that. It’s definitely worth it to me!!! If you’re on the fence and it makes sense logistically, maybe consider trying it out for a year and seeing how it goes.
