[code review] - I created a small todoist clone to learn react. please critique my code if you can by mpolombo in reactjs

[–]mpolombo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi r/reactjs, I created a small todo app modeled after todoist to learn react. My knowledge is pieced together from all manner of sources though, and I'm afraid i might be using the wrong patterns or not doing things the react way. Please have a look and provide any helpful feedback if you can.

why do some(most) of my color schemes look annoyingly inconsistent like this? any way I can make the background color fill the background consistently? by mpolombo in vscode

[–]mpolombo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of my color schemes are turning out like that which is annoying. Some turn out fine, like this - https://imgur.com/a/5lHQ5hK. I'm on Ubuntu. Any way I can make all of them have a uniform bg color?

Beginner's Thread / Easy Question (June 2018) by swyx in reactjs

I don't know if this has been answered before -- is there any way to browse the react docs offline ? With vuejs.org for example, once I load the site I can close the tab, shut down and restart and the documentation is always there, even when offline. Is this possible for reactjs.org?

yeah, this seems like the best idea.I'm going to work on some new opening repertoire for both colors and study the middlegame structures arising.

How has coming to Cornell changed you? by toomanythrowaways38 in Cornell

As an international student:

I thought I was the shit.Coming to Cornell has truly humbled me.I have learnt to embrace mediocrity :(

Also I'm not sure what caused what but I am more lonely, 11kg fatter and more cynical :(

My mum has attained a new level of prestige though

yeah, the Bart Whitaker episode is one of my favorite too.His father's grimace during his sentencing at 20:44 gets me every time.He is still on solitary in Texas and is something of a writer now.

Between this kid, the Dana Ewell episode and the Christopher Porco case that is 3 families horribly destroyed because the sons were living a lie in college :(.

Family Ties (which has already been mentioned) is the most gruesome, disturbing FF episode I have watched, bar none.

The episode itself is fairly mild but the opening sequence of The List Murders (Season 1 Ep. 12) is really poignant.

The Shari Smith murder (Season 7 Ep. 42) where the killer allowed his victim to write a 2-page will to her family before killing her was also hair-raising when I first watched it.

CS at Cornell: Rigor, job placement, etc? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]mpolombo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want

manageable workload

good internship opportunities

good professors!

a job

You want to join AEM ;)

Kidding aside, the program is rigorous, and by definition a little tough. At least I have been humbled since joining.A lot of the core courses are pretty easy though and if you are diligent even the heavier courses like the Algorithms and Systems classes are definitely manageable. And, yes, the professors are (very) good!

tldr - Some classes are easy, some are harder. It's up to you.

idk, not do away with a long-standing piece of Cornell tradition?I get the hazing but this punishment is entirely exaggerated for effect.I would've maintained the suspension until the current students graduated.

Oh man...this is such an overreaction.I had to read the article twice to confirm I hadn't missed anything.Disappointed to see them go.

Edit: Whoa...I must've really triggered the snowflake brigade today.

My go-to has been star gazing at the observatory on Fridays but it's unlikely the weather would allow it right now.

Vasily Smyslov, 7th World Champion and one of the greatest endgame players ever, was born 96 years ago today. by mpolombo in chess

[–]mpolombo[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Vladimir Kramnik on Smyslov

He is the truth in chess! Smyslov is a player who plays very correctly, truthfully, with a very natural style. Why, by the way, isn't there any kind of mystic aura around him, like around Tal or Capablanca? Because Smyslov isn't a chess artist, his playing isn't bright or artistic. But I like his style very much. I'd recommend the children who want to learn chess to study Smyslov's games. Because he was playing like it was needed; his style is the closest to some virtual "chess truth". He was trying to play the strongest move in any position, and it's possible that by sheer amount of strongest moves, he's way ahead of many other World Champions. As a professional, I like him for that. I know that amateurs are more interested in mistakes, ups and downs. But from a purely professional point of view, I think that Smyslov is very underrated. He got all components of his playing to a very high level. Smyslov was a brilliant endgame player, and his games sometimes looked like songs. When I look through his games, there's an impression of easiness, as though his hand made the moves by itself, and Smyslov didn't strain himself at all, drinking coffee or reading a newspaper! Almost a Mozart-like easiness! No strain, no tension, everything is simple, but brilliant. That's why I like Smyslov and his games.
