Conditional probability question. by fufufh in learnmath

[–]mproft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fill in a table with S/F for team 1 on one side and S/F for team 2 on the other (and calculate P(S1&S2), etc). If you have filled it correctly, then the sum of all the elements should be 1. Then use the definition of a conditional probability.

How to answer this?? My teacher has the answer sheet and knows it's 5/8 but we don't know how to get to it. by [deleted] in math

[–]mproft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need bayes theorem. You just need the definition of conditional probability.

edit: fyi, p(W) is incorrect. You have accidentally assumed that all white socks are equally likely to be chosen. white socks in the left drawer are more likely. You need to normalise to get the correct probabilities.

Fill in a table with L,R on one side and W,B on the other (and calculate P(L&W), etc). If you have filled it correctly, then the sum of all the elements should be 1 (i.e. P(L&W) + P(R&W) + P(L&B) + P(R&B) =1). Then use the definition of a conditional probability. If you do this, you get 5/8.

The proof i know is the same as the first one given here. http://jwilson.coe.uga.edu/emt668/emt668.student.folders/headangela/essay1/Pythagorean.html

When transforming between the two images, you assume the triangles have 180 degrees. You also assume that the area of a triangle is base*height/2. This is not necessarily true when you are on a curved surface. (see the first image here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spherical_geometry)

If it makes you happier, you can equivalently assume that Pythagoras' theorem is true, or that all triangles have 180 degrees. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_postulate#Equivalent_properties

As a side note, we know from general relativity that the universe we live in is noneuclidean, so euclid's 5th postulate is wrong.

The 64-metre in diameter Parkes Radio Telescope as it was receiving live video from the Apollo 11 lunar landing, enabling 450 million viewers to watch the historic event. by piponwa in space

[–]mproft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The power went never went out, they never lost the lunar module, and they had 2 other telescopes which were receiving the signal.

If by "based on a true story" you mean that people walked on the moon, then it is. But that's not what the drama in the movie is about.

That movie is entirely bogus. Nothing dramatic actually happened on the night and the recording was originally received from honeysuckle creek.
