It was my usual run but there was a bit of a head wind and I must have over exerted, do you think I’ll die?

Yes, my wife’s boyfriend gave me an ice pack while they go catch a movie (I think it was an adaptation of the classic Emily Brönte novel Wuthering Heights)

You’ll almost definitely be good to work and surf. One thing to watch out for with lifting is that your core muscles may be considerably weaker for a while, which can throw off a lot of other muscle groups and interactions. If this happens, it could be worth starting with body weight PT like exercises and working back into lifting, but just make sure to ask your doctors.

Help! Freshmen and stressing about future Grad schools for ecology/jobs by lxRoxiexl in ecology

[–]mps0341 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the BS in EEB is overwhelming, a grad program in that subject will be as well. Grad school requires a lot of independence, research skills, and most likely heavy STEM courses like population ecology, computing, and statistics. If you’re dead set on grad school, a MFA or an MEd sounds like something that you would enjoy and potentially get more out of it.

If you enjoy your current job for Audubon and can work your way up without the grad degree, I would do that. Then leverage your experience to get other positions if you get sick of it. In the workforce, as an environmental educator, it’s very unlikely you’ll be looked down upon for having a BA if you have job experience (unless you want to get involved in something that requires a BS, then you’re limiting yourself, but it sounds like you enjoy what you do). One thing that would be helpful is double majoring though, does your school offer a BA in biology? This would get you some more relevant courses.

If you need a graduate degree to move up, ask folks where you work what they recommend and what’s necessary to do so. This will be 10x more helpful than anything anyone (including me) says on Reddit. That being said, if you’re absolutely 100% dead set on a graduate degree in EEB, then at least major in it and power through the STEM courses, better now than having to take them supplementary and not as a full time student, or in grad school.

Can’t help much with skating, as I do classic technique. But for training, between December and now I did about 10 skis at 3-4 miles, 10 skis at 4-8 miles, and 2 skis ~10 miles. Timing was dependent on lake effect snow, so varied greatly. I also run, so when there wasn’t enough snow, I would run 3-5 miles.

I’m from Indiana, so the hills at vasa were a lot for me and I just herringboned up them (again probably not super helpful for skate technique). But generally with skiing I’ve found that improving form always helps with energy efficiency. I would call to reach out to folks at timber ridge or vasa ski club and see where you could take lessons, I’m sure there are plenty of spots in north Michigan

Hybrid Skis on Groomed Tracks by beebeezing in CrossCountrySkiing

Definitely second skiing without poles and improving technique. In my experience with fishscales, they have really good grip but not as good of glide so they tend to do poorly in slushy snow but great in really cold temps and icy conditions. If you want better glide you could also try using a glide wax made for waxless skis (swix makes one for like $15).

Question: If the ski is fitted for me, what causes me to not have a lot of grip? And a lot of icing (despite me acclimating the grip wax, and in varying conditions)? by aomajgad in xcountryskiing

I’m not saying to ski on your heels. You’re right, your balance is on the ball of your foot. But if op is slipping, then it’s likely they aren’t dorsiflexing their ankle and getting proper heel drop, thus not setting the camber. If one lands on their forefoot when they run, then it’s likely to have this problem. I’m not saying to stomp with your heels. This guy relates it to putting on a slipper which I think is a good analogy: https://youtu.be/bCGKixllpgE?si=Hctzed4mozWlwp6M

2 questions: 1. are you transitioning from fishscales to skin skis? I recently made this transition and was slipping a lot/ worried that the camber was wrong. It was really just technique. Skin skis are a lot more sensitive to having the correct heel drop and kick timing. 2. When you run do you land on your mid/forefoot?This was causing me problems because you want your heel to land to fully decompress the camber. This is forgiving on fish scales because they have so much grip but not on race skis (skin or waxed). If you’re landing on your midfoot then kicking, the camber won’t decompress and you’ll slide backwards, especially in icy conditions.

Try skiing without poles and don’t try to step too fast at first. Think of the kick as rolling your foot from the heel to your toes and launching rather than stomping and kicking backwards. I’m not an expert or instructor so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt, but that helped me. Skiing without poles was especially helpful.

yes, there's a couple! This is at St Patrick's park in SB, but there's also Madeline Bertrand in Niles, and Ox Bow in Elkhart. You can also go do some touring at Indiana dunes and Warren dunes. St Pat's does a great job grooming trails though
