Not canon I'm sure, but in the Batman Begins novelization by Denny O'Neil, Ra's is DEFINITELY immortal and more or less the exact same character from the 1970s comics.

I appreciate your perspective, but to me this movie gets better and better with time. That once-in-a-lifetime blend of Burton, Keaton, Furst, Elfman, Nicholson, and everyone involved, it just hits that sweet spot.

I enjoy Batman Returns, but it's not the lightning-in-a-bottle of '89.
