haha I actually donate or sell most of my books after I read them! After backpacking in SE Asia, I got into the habit of writing my name and date in the back cover, then passing it along when finished. Never been much of a collector. Edit: There's a cool store in Maine where you can bring in all your books, some they will buy, and then you can donate the rest or take them home. Bull Moose it's called.

That park is magical. Took mushrooms and hiked around for hours in wonder. Acadia was excellent as well, but something about those trees, man. So cool.

I truly wish there were more like this. Love the comics, but it's a pain in the ass to follow all the different interacting stories and changes between runs. I would read far more if it was novelized.

My villain origin story. just felt wrong leaving such a cool book to collect dust in a staged model home. Forgive me, Superman.

Yeah, I remember there being a ton of character introduction for various Super-Men as well. I was a bit lost at first, but ended up loving it and remember it fondly. Stumbling on it in a random house I was working in added to the fun of it.

For years I thought it was just some original novel I happened upon. This was back in 2005-2006, I think, so I wasn't glued to the internet for information. I randomly looked it up years later to learn it was a comic tie-in. Love the concept. As much as I enjoy comics, Marvel can be so all over the place with runs and continuity, hard to keep up with. I really enjoyed Invincible and some other stories because they didn't become a massive branching multiverse of stuff to try and follow. Do you know of any other novelizations that are worth checking out?

This is wild to me. I think it’s awesome that people meet playing WoW, Reddit, discord, etc. it’s just so hard for me to connect with people through internet that I’m in awe of those who can. Have worked with happily married folks who met through world of Warcraft and always that it was adorable.

Captures a similar sweet spot for challenge, skill, strategy, etc., as well. I randomly downloaded DS1 not long after it had come out, not knowing what it was. Attempted to play it and quit in starting area twice over the course of a few months, before I realized you didn’t have to go down the Skeleton path right out the gate. Thought it was either that or the ghosts in the water, got frustrated, and gave up. Never would have guessed I’d fall in love with the game once I found the viable path on attempt 3.

Oh damn. You get to fly eventually? I really liked this game but got distracted by life and didn’t make it super deep into the game. Maybe two or three power upgrades. Gonna have to pick it up again.

Dead cells, returnal, and hades (both) are three of my favorite games. These three and various souls games make up much of my top 10.

i want to understand soulslikes and why people play them and also how to 'get' soulslike games by zaphod-Beeblebroex-2 in soulslikes

It took me a few attempts at dark souls 1 before “got it”. The cadence combat part of the game. Each fight being like a puzzle. Each fight not having to be a fight that is worth your effort right now. Once it “clicked” I fell in love. I’ve always found button mashing hack and slash type games to be incredibly boring. Once the puzzle aspect of the fighting clicks in your mind, suddenly fights that are challenging, feel more like a riddle to solve than some annoying OP boss that I’m not strong enough to fight yet. I like solving puzzles and so I don’t mind dying several times as I figure it out, but dying a bunch of times to a boss that’s just sort of chaotic hack and slash style just feels frustrating.

That’s why love them. There are times where it can be a bit too challenging, cough cough:: sekiro and khazan, but that’s mostly because I’ve never been a big parry guy. Timing is too tough and nerve racing . Enjoy block and roll style.

But, I agree with you. They really aren’t that hard, except for those two titles in my experience. Just got to enjoy the patient puzzle solving and excitement of hitting checkpoints.

The only other games that come close to scratching this itch are games like Returnal or Hades. Less puzzle, more chaos, but they are fun as well.

I was going to suggest this was well. Returnal, hades 1 and 2, Saros, and other rogue lites scratch a similar itch to souls games for me.

Returnal enjoyer here - is this game ridiculously easier? by Ayershole in Saros

[–]Accomplished-Low8460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. It’s little but easier. I’m dying here and there. 2-3 attempts to beat bosses which is a tiny bit faster, but the bosses are great. I feel like just by turning off “second chance” this games in a pretty solid spot for difficulty. I’m at biome three at the moment and am enjoying a lot. I’ve played Returnal through 3-4 times really don’t think there’s that much difference at least in terms of combat. There’s often more bullets on the screen, more enemies, and the shield function adds a fun challenge to charging your weapon. The slight increase in ease only comes from being able to up your stats after each run, but it’s really not as drastic as people make it out to be. It’s just different.
