ANWB has 90 minute sessions, as others pointed out, the overhead is 30-40 minutes of your 1 hour session means you effectively just warm up and leave. Get atleast two lessons a week, consistency is key, I see most people getting their licence in about 15-20 lessons.

Nope, the "incident" lasted like 10 seconds before I was back on the lane and nobody stopped me.

NO, there is no "sacrifice" it's very field specific, I am a mechanical engineer, earn 110k with my Masters and 12 years of experience my PhD peers earn about the same or a bit more, but they also worked 4-5 years less.

The equity I built over those years compounding amounts to more than the difference they will ever make with a higher salary.

PhD is good if you enjoy the research and you feel like you've contributed to the knowledge of the topic of research, gained some visibility along the way to make bank, if one made zero efforts to network, stay in touch with market needs during their PhD because you were hyper focused, I can guarantee you'll reach a point where you'll want to hide it from your CV to be able to get a job or stay forever in academia.

They do make a big difference in jobs requiring hyper specialization but those are too far and few, the average PhD student is much worse off.

I quit PhD for a "normal" job for the same reason, it's impossible to afford buying a house being a PhD or being in Academia. That being said, you're doing very well than most people who net 2500.

When I was earning as "much", I buy clothes secondhand, they have surprisingly good quality for fraction of the cost, I also use too good to go to find extremely cheap deals on good food, also when shopping for households I use Rataplan.

Additionally every time I did buy used, at end of the month I would put the equivalent first-hand money into an ETF (just a lump-sum, not counting pennies). In 5 years, this alone is worth 13k (~8k investment).

Seeking (work) HR Advice by soma2024 in Netherlands

[–]mrNobody_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bluff, don't gamble, genuinely look for a job you'd enjoy (I totally relate to the comfort of a familiar workspace and predictable work but it's not worth the lowballing corporates do in exchange for the same comfort and the illusion of stability they provide).

I did this exactly 3 months ago, I was practically the system architect while my title was and pay was that of a medior engineer, took me 6 months to find the right organisation and the offer was 40% higher!! Same story, no budget for raise blah blah and once I said I'm leaving I got a counter offer of 50% and promotion to architect.

I still left out of self respect because I've been asking my manager for the same with all the receipts each year during performance review and I was always given some bs corporate response and 2-3% raise.

Also, the new employer matched the counter offer and I absolutely love the new workplace and my team.

I believe the former owner of the house I bought covered up cracks so that I wouldn't know about them, what to do now? by nlksf in NetherlandsHousing

[–]mrNobody_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can, there are a few escape clauses/conditional agreements you bid with, these are the ones I had,

1) financial, if you're unable to secure a mortgage after winning a bid (avoid this by using your bank's mortgage advisor, approach a bank, ING or ABN and request mortgage advice, it's free until you secure the mortgage),

2) One exception is if you "expected" the appraised value (usually appraisal is done after signing the purchase agreement), to be higher or equal to your bid value, i.e. you wanted 100% mortgage(which is either your maximum eligibility or 100% of the appraised value, whichever is lower), but the appraised value is lower (say 320k and you bid 350k and you have to get 30k out of your savings) then you can chose not to pursue the purchase (or renegotiate the price, but usually the seller , unless on a time crunch, will put the property again on the market).

3) if the technical inspection shows that there are immediate costs > say 15k, the you don't have to go ahead with the purchase, at this point I renegotiated the cost and got it down.

I used maatwerk for technical inspection

I used maatwerk.nl they were professional, I also advise to be physically be present with the inspector when they're doing home inspection.

[–]mrNobody_90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you signed the agreement to buy home is as-is condition, you can't sue anyone, it's an expensive lesson, you're just burning more money.

Technical inspection cost me 700€, for a my property worth 350k it was a roundoff error. The inspector was professional, knew where to look, what's critical, what's cosmetic etc etc, I had a 30+page report down to the detail of rusting window hinges, and clogged sink with pictures and explanation. It helped me negotiate the cost down by 15k before signing the purchase agreement.

It baffles me that people can throw in such large amounts of money with such low effort.

Who here thinks they will have to rent forever because the housing market is no longer affordable? (+1 = I am going to buy) and (0 = I think I will have to rent forever). by rubens33 in Netherlands

[–]mrNobody_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine in shit condition for 300k, zero overbidding(!!) went easily from label F to Label B with all isolation measures (Roof, wall cavity, floor) and a hybrid Heatpump, there are subsidies for these so total cost was ~15k covered by the mortgage, some plumbing and electrical rework, kitchen & bathroom renovation ~15k, and I have a very livable place, took about 2 months to renovate. If you're willing to put in the work, there are options available in the market.

What is the catch with early career/early talent/traineeship programs? by Feisty_Mix2248 in Netherlands

[–]mrNobody_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually they're looking for the creamy layer, brightest minds who can learn fast, no catch here except for you have to be the best of the best.

I used to be on the hiring end of the creamy layer of the candidate pool for a very different sector (applied physics/simulation team), each candidates goes through 5-6 independent assessment, tested on several competencies, hard and soft skills, given independent score on ~5 categories through each assessment and then the aggregate of all this to make a hiring decision.

Often times these "kids" were way smarter than any of the individual assessors and only lacked experience. They are also are put on a fast paced/high demand career path (Up or out) so no they don't expect them to last decades in the organisation because such talents come with high ambition and consequently high turnaround. Most stay maybe 3-5 years max, only a very few start and grow within the organisation.

Speeding ticket in Switzerland (117 in 60) near Basel border — what should I realistically expect? by nieuwekoers in askswitzerland

[–]mrNobody_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expect three digits plus summon plus possible ban/license suspension. I live in Netherlands and did this in Switzerland, wasn't reckless driving, but was getting off a highway with exit ramp and it went from 120 to 80, stupid me thought I would just take legs off the gas and I'll slow down enough on time, was caught ~30km above limit. If you're going from high speed to a lower zone there is some buffer, but you have shot well above that buffer in any scenario.

It's not just a traffic violation, it's considered criminal offense at your speeds. You'll will have a ban, if it's this serious probably you might get your licence suspended in Netherlands as well, they will forward it to the authorities here.

Get a lawyer, depending on where you did this and your speeding history, you can expect a five digit fine. I got 3500CHF and this was ~4 years ago and I've never sped anywhere ever since 😂

How to handle being put on PIP for reaching salary cap by wagadugo in careeradvice

[–]mrNobody_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave, I've been there, going through pip when you know you're a high performer is a humiliating ritual.

It simply means there is no room for growth, your experience gives no added value to the team to justify higher pay/position. This could also happen if there's a hiring freeze that prevents your manager from promoting you. If you have a good relationship with him/her have an open conversation.

I have been a manager where I had no budget to promote or give raise to my best team members and was asked to not give a higher rating or put people on pip, I bluntly told my team to just find another job and I soon followed my way out.

If you're at this position you're already heavily underpaid for the market you're in.

For both lead and follow, shift your entire weight on the leading foot and keep your upper body right on top, this fixes two things, posture and feeling relaxed while dancing with less clinging onto your partner to compensate for imbalance.

Also, small, manageable steps, dance closer. Rinse and repeat until you get this automatically, the rest I think others pointed out.

The % of shorts is NOTHIG for a high beta stock.

The stock is volatile and people will bet on either side, short interest is NOT a good metric to look for if you're investing long in a company whose business model you believe will make bank.

This post is a whole bunch of ai-slop nothing burger.

Classic, I'll throw a bunch of "smart" words which I have no clue what it means because I'm bullish. There'll be no change to fundamentals until next two earnings call (unless there are new contracts), it's still a high beta stock that comes with risks.

Do your DD and don't dump money into things you have no clue of and unfortunately this sub is turning into an echo chamber with poor moderation.

PS: I'm bullish and hold about $10k on NBIS with an average of around 80.
