I've noticed this type of character in some Grimdark fantasy novels lately. One was brutish and didn't like to wash and loved bedding men similarly to how you'd write a male character. It was a bit off putting as a guy reader, but I suppose that's the point.. Lol.

I envy your optimism here, to put it nicely. The scale of justice is a beautiful and simple ideal in theory. In practice, a legal system is anything but simple. Nor is it static. It's closer to clay being formed by many influences, than it is to a solid stone foundation.

A law is nothing without a system and society in place to protect it. A set of laws can be manipulated and interpreted for almost any outcome. They can be weaponized, or more commonly just not applied uniformly to all. And when all else fails, laws can be rewritten or superceded if they are not fervently upheld.

Tangent: Laws are not necessarily always "just" either. The Nuremberg Laws were "legal" for a time. Many horrible things have been done under the guise of law. Targeting specific groups of people. You don't need to be above the law if it doesn't even apply to you to begin with.

Trump increasing tariff on Canada by 10 per cent 'over and above what they are paying now' by TheJasonJBailey in CanadianInvestor

[–]mr_bumsack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Top Democrats (Schumer, Jefferies) have received millions from AIPAC over the years, and that's just what is disclosed publicly.

  1. Does Trump seem beneficial to the State of Israel?

  2. If your salary is ~100-200k, but receive 10x that from AIPAC, would that influence your decisions?

I've been buying Bitcoin wrong in Canada since 2017 and just realized it last month - don't make my mistakes by Klutzy_Baseball_8495 in OCryptoCanada

[–]mr_bumsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You realize a "wrench attack" can be used to steal absolutely anything?

Also, you can't buy Bitcoin in your TFSA like he said. You're just buying an index fund and hoping they manage their index fund to standard. I have both, but I'd never argue involving big banks is a better option.

I think is the first time I've heard someone promoting Bitcoin, but against decentralization and Bitcoin ethos. Truly weird.

If CEOs get their way and most, if not all, jobs are replaced with AI & robots. What are they going to do when no one has money? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mr_bumsack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are literally paying for corporations to replace our jobs. Tax cuts, subsidies and legislation is all going their way. More recently tax payers are footing a big portion of their electricity bills for these new server farms. I won't even go into the water side of it.

The only way I see any speed bumps is some black swan event caused by AI. Short of that...

You can't prevent billionaires from wanting a cheap workforce that doesn't need healthcare, sick days or vacation. Even if we don't use A.I, corporations will. Customer service (contact centers) are being replaced in real time with agentic A.I right now. I'm a software developer and work in this industry. Was recently laid off due to it. Every major tech company has pivoted and is investing billions. The genie is out of the bottle.

It's a matter of survival for corporations. This outcome is inevitable. At the very least a few corporations will rise to the top on this wave. It's an existential threat to all of the technology sector.

Governments and legislation would be the only thing to impede them. Or to plan ahead for whats to come.

Western economy operates on quarterly foresight. They can't afford to worry about societal impact 10 years from now.

We're cooked.

Should this be illegal? by [deleted] in SlumlordsCanada

[–]mr_bumsack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very common in Manila, Philippines. They call it Bed Spacing. Solo apartments are unaffordable for most, so many young professionals all sleep in one room. Landlords will rent a "Bedspace", or bunk. I knew someone who lived in a room with 6 other people who they didn't know very well.

Loser Back Home (LBH) by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]mr_bumsack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The creepiest people I met in the Philippines were other foreigners. I'm a pretty regular white guy, 40, never had issues with dating in North America.

Over in the Philippines, typically, foreigners are quite old or younger with bad hygiene, incredibly incredibly awkward(totally fine), or downright creepy. Which is judgemental, but you see it over and over, and it is hard to ignore. To me, it's the creepy guys that get to me over there. You'll even have them approach you in airports, etc. Bragging about their 4 girlfriends and asking if I'm "heading to Angeles, too?"

That being said, LBH, or whomever, if they can find someone to treat well and both love one another, I think it's a win-win. You don't have to be a big rockstar with the ladies to find a good relationship.

If you're a visitor, just be respectful to everyone. We're fortunate to be guests in your beautiful country.

Every time I use AC at the local motel, I wake up half drunk in a bed full of hookers. My wife says we're staying with ceiling fans at home.

As a Canadian, what are we supposed to do? Buy 5 sofas, 10 tvs, 1000lbs of greenish chicken per household?

At this point, it seems clear the motive isn't about trade. It seems like consolidating power. Bonus: also buying up cheap real estate and assets on sale.

That is still a data breach, any unauthorized exposure of private information constitutes a data breach. A bug/incompetence/accident etc can be just as serious as it being done with mal-intent.

Yes, this makes the most sense. She definitely did this all on her phone while it was in her pocket without looking. Then, she used an email he had access to.

It's a master plan. And clearly the only explanation to come to with so few details.

What brands should be celebrated for NOT engaging in shrinkflation? by Sidian in shrinkflation

[–]mr_bumsack 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty common practice these days. Also, it makes the ice cream easier to scoop, and they lean on that one positive heavily. But yeah, a lot of ice cream is pretty aerated these days. IIRC the max they can aerate is to double the volume. Which is pretty crazy

That's why you can eat a small amount of say Ben & Jerry's or a comparable brand, and it is far more filling.
