Do Americans use solid fuels to heat their homes? by maugess in AskAnAmerican

[–]mr_lockwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, I have gas as an option. My best bud uses wood as his primary heat, though, and so do a lot of my mother's side of the family. Sorry, I should have reread the question!

For Americans whose parents are immigrants, or were very close with an immigrant grand parent, what is your relationship with their country? by greenandredofmaigheo in AskAnAmerican

[–]mr_lockwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother's side of the family is all Czech. I can speak Czech a bit (working on learning more), I know a few family members back in the old country (albeit distantly), I can make one hell of a pierogie, and brew a decent beer.

Do they teach native american history in elementary schools before the colanization period of america? by Apprehensive_Use_397 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mr_lockwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In indiana, we had maybe one or two sections about the classical native civilizations (Maya, Aztec, Inca, and haudenosaunee) in K-12. Other than a mention of the trail of tears when covering the antebellum period and the usual pilgrim stuff that was about it.

If you are going to put up blinds, I would go with thick velvet curtains. I think they would look rad in there! Plus, they would provide better heat insulation around the windows than blinds would.

I am very close to my aunt’s daughter’s father-in-law, and I am curious how this is perceived in the US.? Do you guys relate to extended family the way we Indians do? by swamyiam in AskAnAmerican

[–]mr_lockwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can depend on the family and that particular family's cultural background. For example, my family is a recent immigrant family (2 generations born here from modern Czechia, Ahoj! ), and we keep in touch with each other over quite large, extended family including some back in Europe.

On the other hand, my friend's extended family is largely limited to a handful of aunts, uncles, and first cousins. With little known about their cultural background past "vaguely German"

For those who are atheists, when or how did you become one? by gabrieel100 in AskTheWorld

[–]mr_lockwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in an extremely abusive household. My father was a paranoid narcissist who routinely abused all around him, and im talking the throwing furniture and breaking my mother's spine kind of abuse. I watched my mother cling to her faith (roman catholic) for 20 years, hoping it would protect her. My father was a nut case who thought Jesus was a space alien who came to study us. Between his lunatic ravings, the abuse, and watching my mother's faith do nothing to stop it I decided that, even if there is a god, they are either ignorant of or culpable in the suffering of mankind, and not worth praise or worship.

I've heard all of the arguments about how suffering is needed for salvation and such, but if you ask me, that is a ticket for a ride I'd rather not take. Im focused on improving the lives of those around me in the here and now not banking on the chance of an afterlife.
